A little late, or just in time to light that spark ahead of the holiday shopping period. We'll see in the coming weeks.

The update seems pretty sizable, so it may have the ability to reignite interest.

Inazuma was the first successful sport RPG and Yo-kai Watch the only serious Pokémon contender.
The Captain Tsubasa series by Tecmo was very successful on NES/GB/SNES.
Combined the 5 episodes have sold 2.62M.

Yo-kai Watch was extremely successful in Japan (and also abroad sold quite well) to the point that Yo-kai Watch 2 is one of the very (very) few games to have sold more than 6M copies in Japan (the YW2's three versions have shipped in total 6.09M in Japan), it's abit hard to consider it a serious contender when it collapsed so quickly though.
Dragon Quest Monsters never remotely hit the high of YW (though it has a good number of million seller) but it will outlast the YW series.

I dont think FF7R can sell 15M but I would be happy to eat crow on that.

I think 15 million is A LOT for a JRPG not named Pokémon, sure MHW will end up surpassing 15 million by next year, but i don't think FF7R has the same pull only on one platform, even if it's the most regarded Final Fantasy title ever.

I might be so wrong as well.

Thanks for the correction! That was based on a widely popular manga though and also, correct me if I'm wrong, back then sales were much more concentrated on fewer releases.

Why another?
But yeah 13 Sentinels was expected to be down from previous Vanillaware titles for a long time, it has less appeal by design, only release on PS4 and its demo release showed its potential already.
Sub 100k is a given, let's hope it clears 50k at least.

I think the best move for Monster Hunter would be a 2020 exclusive game for the Switch with an expanded version in 2021 and a 2022/2023 PS5/XBox/PC title.

This way they could milk the franchise yearly and the titles would always excite fans and feel fresh. They should aim for the high install bases. It worked for 3DS and PS4 this way. PS5 needs time to grow and PS4 is dying. They can still take the money from Sony and Nintendo because they could always go multiplatform or worse to the contender.

It's impossible to know if we don't have a complete set of data for software of older consoles.
What I can say is that the average sales per game (total software sales / number of releases) in Japan was:

NES/FC: 225860 (k) / 1047 = 215.72 (k)
3DS: 136950 (k) / 668 = 205.01 (k)

EDIT:
It's feasible to calculate the percentage of million seller games over total software between NES and 3DS (though it is necessary to take a sell-through estimate for DQXI for 3DS ...).

I dont think FF7R can sell 15M but I would be happy to eat crow on that.

No chance in hell.

People have insane expectations for this game. How quickly we all forget three very important things...

1: In all of the entire history of gaming, only one solitary remake has ever outsold its original counterpart; and that is Kirby Superstar Ultra. Right off the bat, that means that it is almost certainly not going to outsell the original FF7 (Which is around 12 million WW I believe, after tallying up all of the various versions over the years).

2: FF7R (as it stands) is only a tiny fraction of the actual complete game. This remake only covers the first 5 hours or so of the original game; it is NOT a complete game. That immediately puts a ceiling on its potential sales.

3: FF7R is releasing at the very tail end of the PS4's lifecycle; just about 8 months or so before the PS5 comes out. That puts a cap on its potential legs, backwards compatiblity or not. Interest is rapidly shifting towards the next generation of consoles and we're already seeing the effects of this on game sales worldwide (where everything is down outside of Switch).

15 million is possible when you consider three different FF7R games being sold, across its entire lifetime; but 15 million for this initial release is literally impossible.

Resident Evil 2 will outsell the original, FFVII should be received as well as this one and the original is even more of a fan favorite/cult/classic than OG RE2 was.
FFVIIR is a complete game, it's a remake you know, it's not like they cut FFVII in 3 parts without changing/adding anything and said "here you go, that's your FFVIIR-1,-2,-3, now you're gonna pay 60$ for a 5 hours game". It will be playable on PC and PS5 too, next gen hype doesn't mean the game won't have legs when something like TLOU more than tripled its sales after 2013. Everything is down outside of Switch? CoD is down? GTA is down? FIFA is down? NBA is down? MK, KH, RE, MH? Borderlands 3 and The Outer Worlds sales are great too. What are you talking about?
10 million units (what will be ~ FFXV's LT sales) is the absolute floor.

FF7R will be such a huge event on a worldwide basis. Also, its sales won't stop after a year as it'll likely be ported to new gen consoles too and to PC. 15m might seem a bit too much but 10m are not out of reach.

Calling it FF7R and missing the important middle portion and the most important conclusion of FF7 story is one of the most coward example of false advertisements I've ever seen for a game. But similar to Death Stranding prior to launch phase there seems to be a lot of people playing devils advocate for free and making excuses for these kind of marketing stunts.

At new releases, SD Gundam G Generation: Cross Rays ranked 2nd and 3rd and 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim ranked 4th. Both had high sales and a good start."

PS4 is down 50% YoY in November.

Hopefully the upcoming price promotion should help a bit even if significant decline is expected in December too.

I think it's funny how we mock Level 5 while also talking about how all the big existing IPs are in decline in Japan. It's almost like they actually were doing what you would hope other publishers would eventually get too.

Obviously they have fucked up royally but you dont create 3 million seller new IPs and a handful of smaller still successful games by accident. It would be a shamw to lose them.

In other news, FF7R is a wild card. If it was the full game and not the Midgar section I would say 15m easy. As is I dont know but we are also ignoring it will likely get a next gen release as well as a PC release which will significantly raise its sales potential.

Edit: Looking at KH3 shipments and factoring in PC and next gen, 15m actually isn't crazy. It will easily break 10m.

RE2R's on 3 platforms. There's also a lot of original RE2 sales missing from Capcom's Platinum Chart since they used to break it up by SKU (PSX Dual Shock Ver, N64 port, DC port, PC port, GC port, PS1 Classics digital). The N64 port did 500k in the US alone iirc.

1: In all of the entire history of gaming, only one solitary remake has ever outsold its original counterpart; and that is Kirby Superstar Ultra.
I mean, that's definitely not true. Even within the FF series it isn't (FFIII DS > FFIII FC).

FF 7 remake downplay is hilarious.

I feel 12-15 is possible with the right marketing.
You can count the number of PS4 exclusives that did 12-15m on one hand. And zero are 3rd party.

Some may be downplaying it's potential but I'm not sure you realize the scale of what you're saying is possible. You're overplaying here.

Well, GTA 5 did and RDR2 as well, since they sold over 24 million copies on two platforms and i highly doubt the Xbox One version did 10 million alone.

EDIT. My bad, PS4 exclusives not PS4 titles*

I'm so blind
Oh yeah, some multiplats definitely have, I suspect some FIFA and COD games fall in this camp too. Nothing from Japan does however.

The point is 12-15m is an incredibly high figure and one that barely any publishers really manage on a single console. This gen only Sony, Take2, Activision, EA and Nintendo likely will.

FF7 will probably hit 15M

After all the episodes are out

And across 3 platforms

And some "generous" seasonal discounts

I mean, that's definitely not true. Even within the FF series it isn't (FFIII DS > FFIII FC).

Nope, that's wrong.

To the best of my knowledge, Kirby Superstar Ultra is the one and only remake to ever outsell its original counterpart.

You're very welcome to prove me wrong. But even so, the point is that videogame remakes almost never outsell their original counterparts, no matter how well made or high profile they are.

I was talking globally. FF3 DS sold over 2m.

Then that's a pretty disingenuous comparison then, because FF3 NES sold 0 copies outside of Japan. FF3 DS IS the original version to everyone outside of Japan.

Apples to Apples, it failed to outsell the original version; just like pretty much every single videogame remake ever made.

There is no reason to believe that FF7R will magically buck this trend that has continued for decades upon decades. Not only does it have all of the factors going against it that I previously mentioned, but the FF series as a whole has hugely weakened since its PS1 glory days.

No amount of blind fanboy wishing is going to change that.

I thought you were talking globally since the post you were responding to was. I'm not being disingenuous here.

Do people here honestly expect FF7R to remain a PS4/Sony exclusive? It's pretty obviously a timed (likely 6 months to a year) exclusive so talking as if only PS4 sales will matter is a bit... silly.

No, after Sony's moneyhat window I'm expecting ports to everything that can reasonably run it knowing SE. Likely for generations to come too, I'll be sure to pick up the Complete Collection on my Super Switch 7 years from now.

The point is that no videogame remake has ever outsold its original counterpart; I'm obviously not counting games that were never originally released outside Japan (because that's an unfair and pointless comparison).

FF7R will not buck this trend.
