Swtich still constrained, nice bump for PS4, expected a bit more from the bundles.
That XB2 drop is not great nor bad (in the middle between XB and XBX), let's see what happens next week, I still think it will crawl to 200k, but it will be difficult.

Good week for Switch's big three of Super Mario Odyssey, Splatoon 2, and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. It's kind of surprising that Switch hardware numbers aren't higher right now, but we'll have to see how the rest of the month goes.

Kinda weird how big supply problems Nintendo has in Japan when in west Switch is pretty well stocked despite the holidays. I guess they really concentrated their stock to west this holiday season (makes sense too with more competition)

Logistically, I imagine they can get Switches from factory to JP retail extremely quickly, so have been diverting the bulk of stock to NA / EMEA for time critical holiday sales, so that they do not have to pay extra for air shipping.

I am sure Xenoblade 2 will atleast grow in the west and reach over a million easily thanks to that, shame there is not much of a growth in Japan tho. Altho i think it will still end up to be the best selling one in the series there but not by much.

Still a shame tho it's a geniunely good series and up there with FF, KH and DQ imo quality wise.

Anyway pretty decent week overall. Mario is at a million with digital already probs but certainly over 1 million physical wise next week.

Edit: MK8 DX also nearing 1m nice, and Splatoon those dem squid legs keep on givin, Zelda nearing 700k cmon lil fella slowly crawl to the million :P

Lots of disappointment this week...

-Very low Switch sales. 164k is way below my disappointment target of 200k... :/
-PS4 Pro sales are a bit on the low side too. I expected a bit more MH PS4 Pro units than ~40k. The jump after the DQ bundle in 2014 was 50k (as said in the previous thread). I was hoping for a bit more than that, but we got a bit less... The MH bundle was sold out, wasn't it? So no tail next week? :(
-Kamen Rider: Climax Fighters sales are very low, compared to previous Kamen Rider games. It didn't look bad. It's PS4 exclusive. I wonder what BNE will do with the series in the future in terms of games...

But there's some cool stuff too:

-Yakuza Kiwami 2 sales are neat. Lower sales than the original Kiwami were expected, especially since this one is PS4 exclusive. Kiwami did 163k combined FW and Yakuza 6 (the first PS4 exclusive game in the series) did 218k. A number like this is expected. Hopefully it'll have decent legs. (And hopefully, it'll get localised!)
Code:
01./00. [PS4] Yakuza: Kiwami <ADV> (Sega) {2016.01.21} (¥6.490) - 103.256 / NEW <74,43%>
02./00. [PS3] Yakuza: Kiwami <ADV> (Sega) {2016.01.21} (¥6.490) - 60.427 / NEW <75,15%>

01./00. [PS4] Yakuza 6: The Song of Life # <ADV> (Sega) {2016.12.08} (¥8.190) - 218.168 / NEW <60,50%>

-Earth Defense Force 5 at #2. Nice! Great sales! 111k is pretty good. It's a bit lower than 2025, as shown earlier in the thread. But as a PS4 exclusive, it's still a great result. Hopefully it'll have similar legs as previous installments in the series.

-Xenoblade 2 sales dropped 80%. It's sad, but expected. There's nothing we can do about it. That's just how the world works. (:P) Maybe the game can get some boost when the Expansion DLCs release.

-Awesome sales for the evergreen Switch titles, considering hardware sales. Super Mario Odyssey should pass 1M next week. Surprisingly before Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.

-The 3DS has some real leg machines too tho! Girls Mode 4 is 50% up this week, Pokémon USUM sold another 128k units this week (106k + 2*11k), and Animal Crossing is still selling 12k five years later!

-Sumikko Gurashi sales are decent. A little below 10k is expected. These games always have very small FWs, but extreme legs! We won't be able to see its real performance until we get the CY 2018 Top 1000 list.

Switch still could not hit that 200k number sad here.T_T And also, PS4 is not even able to hit 90k with all those SKU push.

USUM doing really well is showing that as much as us fan moan, GF still know how to wring its fanbase as much as possible. Mario,Splatoon and Zelda is going to sell gangbusters even deeper we go to holiday there and of course, Xeno2 is kinda sad. 80% drop shows that the leg is going to be pathetic. Sumikko only doing 9k shows that kids and family demographic still haven't join that Switch train there.

Happy to see Yakuza Kiwami 2 on top of the list. Numbers are not as good as Kiwami 1 but it's somehow expected due to the lack of PS3 version. Hopefully we will get a localization announcement sooner than later!

Japan is in the bag.
Western markets are much much more important at the moment.

That and other asian markets like South Korea and Taiwan. Japanese sellings are going nowhere and japanese devs support is practically guaranteed at this point after their initial doubts. Western devs support on the other hand is still doubtful at best. I think Nintendo is right on prioritizing US stock as well as possible new markets if that's indeed what they are doing. Bigger selling numbers overall would give the Switch nice headlines and momentum but I think it matters not only the size of the install base but how diverse it is in order to make it profitable for a wider amount of devs to support the console.

By the way, I'm really happy with Yakuza 2 numbers, it's a wonderful franchise, I hope western numbers continue to increase too when released.

Somewhere. I think.
Pokémon USUM this week
  • stand-alone: 106 094 units this week, and 1 050 168 units since launch;
  • dual-pack: 11 198 units this week / 22 396 units this week if counted as two units, and 290 149 units since launch / 580 298 units if counted as two units
  • combined: 117 292 units this week / 128 490 units if dual-pack counted as two units, and 1 340 317 units since launch / 1 630 466 units if dual-pack counted as two units
Interesting that the dual-pack went up this week, it's definitely not limited at all (quite the opposite of the ORAS dual-pack).

I don't think a PS3 version would add much here. PS3 dried up over the year (it already saw serious decline in 2016). I think a big factor is that it's simply a remake of the second game instead of the first game. There's less nostalgia involved, simply because its a sequel. Just like how a remake of Pokémon Red/Blue would sell considerably more than a remake of Gold/Silver. Or just like how most sequels less less than the original game.

I feel comparing using Pokémon as an example isn't really apt here. HG/SS outsold FireRed/LeafGreen in Japan and OR/AS outsold both worldwide.

Yeah theoretically that makes sense- demand is at its highest for the west right now, but in Japan demand has seemingly been extremely high since launch. So if Nintendo is trying to satisfy the seasonal demand for the west now assuming the demand in Japan won't change after December then it's a reasonable idea.

But realistically I don't see them shipping 300-400k in any month after December. Maybe early January?

thanks, I'm a goober, Zelda Switch should cross 700k next week, don't know where I got 800 from??

It's still early, it happens!

Since Hardware is constrained and not really worth analyzing, how is software looking when compared to 2016?

looks like week 49, 2016 had a
Yakuza Game on PS4 launch at 218K, though It was probably a new entry.
Pokemon Sun & Moon totaled 190K for the week

Last years comparable titles seemed stronger in general.

Good week, looks like XC2 is going to be the best selling game of the series. Also Nintendo software bump is great, good week all around. BTW.. I still think that Nintendo is not capable to supply the demand of the Switch WW this Christmas.. Now with more countries like South Korea (55K debut week) and Honk Kong is going to be hard.

I don't understand why Nintendo is having so much trouble stocking Japan if NA and Europe aren't having stock problems. Shouldn't they be putting more stock in Japan then?

The low sales of the PS4 MH bundle are probably a forecast of the MHW sales in Japan.

Would be nice if Nintendo finally could ship more Switches. Are they still conservative in sales estimate or can they simply not produce more? I thought the scarcity of some hardware components was no more?

Yakuza 2 is the fan fave entry though. Think like Mega Man 1 vs 2, it being a sequel isn't a negative in this sense.

So...

06./07. [NSW] Mario Kart 8 Deluxe <RCE> (Nintendo) {2017.04.28} (¥5.980) - 33.315 / 894.553 (+42%)

Looks like we have our 3rd million seller for the Switch. 3 during the first year... damn.

Also, they said the Switch's biggest shipment would be next week. As in, we will see that on the charts in 2 weeks.

No they didn't say that. Here's what they said:

This December in Japan we are planning to ship more units than ever before so that even more consumers can purchase and enjoy Nintendo Switch.

I don't understand why Nintendo is having so much trouble stocking Japan if NA and Europe aren't having stock problems. Shouldn't they be putting more stock in Japan then?

Maybe because the stock in Europe and America also sold out rather fast?
I mean difference between selling out everytime you got new stocks vs selling out 1-2 weeks after you got new stocks are negligible I think.

I wonder how many times we have to hear those arguments of "Switch is supply constrained".

Facts are facts, Switch is nowhere near 3DS sales, but that's not Switch or Nintendos fault, it's the Japan market...it's not dead but its suffering a giant " depression" in terms of console sales.

The low sales of the PS4 MH bundle are probably a forecast of the MHW sales in Japan.

Would be nice if Nintendo finally could ship more Switches. Are they still conservative in sales estimate or can they simply not produce more? I thought the scarcity of some hardware components was no more?

Nah, that bundle sold out immediately. All it tells us is the demand far outstripped supply.

But the Switch being supply constrained in Japan is a fact?

Retail stores are holding Switch lotteries for fun.

Welllll.......

First off, the Switch is sold out nation wide. That is a fact.

Second, even with a nearly year long supply issue and 3DS receiving an emergency price cut, Switch is right now still less than 200K units behind 3DS launch aligned.

I still hope Xenoblade Chronicles 2 can get to at least 200,000, but it needed a better second week to really help its chances. It was never going to be a simple task with a first week around 100,000, but the game is amazing and deserves at least that much.

On the bright side, it looks like 2 million is basically guaranteed for Pokemon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon. It's a good sign for the continued strength of the series that the declining appeal of the 3DS and increased Switch shipments hasn't seemed to hold the games back (although I suppose most people did expect bigger Switch shipments than we're currently getting).

Switch isn't far behind 3DS and it's nearly twice the price and still badly supply constrained. This isn't really a reflection on a weakening Japanese market.

If you have evidence that it's not completely sold out nation wide (plenty of people in this thread do have evidence of that fact) then by all means, please share it.

Xenoblade should sell through its shipment soon and get a bit more before the holidays and end up doing better than the first two. Good.

I thought the PS4 would have done a little better. I guess they are still supply constrained on the Switch?
