All this Switch 3rd parties talk reminds me of NIS being there early with Disgaea port and being very happy about the result, the console is nearing its 3rd anniversary and looks like it's another Wii situation where it keeps getting ignored and maybe get year old ports.
Wii situation was pretty different in terms of the actual support it got and audience it cultivated. The only real similarity was that big Japanese publishers largely slept on both. Unlike with Wii though there's no viable alternative for them like DS and PSP were.

As someone who went through the Wii era, this is nothing like the Wii situation. Sure, the Wii got COD and a few others, but the quantity and quality of non-"casual" 3rd party games on the Switch is so, so much better. Anyone who would have described the current situation in 2017 would have been laughed out of the room as delusional. Of course it is not at the support level of the others and it is not getting the level of support it should, but that is another story.

Reading some impressions for Shin Sakura Taisen, and it seems like game is mostly solid besides the combat part.....

Wonder how it'll end up doing.

I think from the JP perspective the big difference is that basically all the small and midsize publishers are supporting Switch whereas a lot still skipped Wii. Big publisher support isn't all that different, fewer exclusives on Switch but more releases overall and everyone's still there
*cough*
Monster Hunter on switch anyone?

What the fuck is this "Mario on Playstation" thing? Is that supposed to be in reference to Minecraft finally getting cross play on PS4?

If Sony do that I think they are foolish. The consumer who buys your console for 20,000 yen is not the same as the consumer who buys a console for 60,000 yen. They should be aiming to capture the lower market and the higher market. Bad decision especially for countries like India where they are super popular but out of most peoples price range.

i could see them pushing ps4 into the ps5's life as a more affordable console, but it specifically goes against their current brand of being the maker of bleeding edge tech to shift to making a system everyone can afford.

if sony had an interest in reaching a wider audience with more limited disposable income, they wouldn't have ditched their handheld line to chase vr, which fits with their brand of being a high-end tech company, despite the massive difference in userbase between even ps vr and vita.

sony cares about legacy as much as it gets people to buy the new thing. they don't weaponize nostalgia (at least not well - see ps one classic), and they haven't shown an interest in growing their casual market since the ps2 (and to a lesser extent, psp).

No, it was something KingZell said. As in Halo Switch being equivalent to "Mario on PlayStation".

Sad to think the thing I want most on that leak list is the least likely one to happen (VJ3).

I'm gonna need some actual context for the message that "Mario on Playstation" came from.

It's "something Halo" on Switch that has been rumored for some months now.

I mean their brand has been always about being maker of bleeding edge tech. PS1, PS2 and PSP were also state of art tech when they released (actually more so than Vita and PS4). Didn't stop them from selling plenty of both after the launch of the successor console. PS3 is pretty much only one that breaks the trend (as that they killed it off) but I think that was partly because it was overengineered disaster tech wise (so it was hard to reduce manufacturing costs) and it was not market leading console so there was less demand for cheap entry level option after PS4 launched. Also regarding of Sony not weaponizing nostalgia we are going to have huge AAA remake of FFVII in just few months moneyhatted by Sony. Also Crash remake had one year exclusive window and is still big part of PS4 marketing (at least in Europe). Medievil remake also just released a month ago.

Wasnt the PS2 the least powerful console of the generation ?

It launched year earlier (actually more like 1.5 years) than Xbox or GC and back then one year meant more when it came to graphics tech than it does today. Also you are forgetting poor old Dreamcast lol.
The GC was fully ready in july 2000. The launch was delayed because software wasn't ready

Oh. I just remember that they unveiled it during the fall of 2000 (compared to fall of 1999 for PS2) Also in my opinion GC is maybe the best engineered console of all time when it comes to performance/price ratio. Doesn't change the fact though that PS2 was absolutely state of art tech too when it launched. far more so than PS4.

KillerMan91 my reading of the current situation is the following.

The audience both Sony and MS are purchasing with their audience is the same : mainly young male adults.

That pie is worth about 170m consoles right now. They have a lead in terms of 1st party content, tier support and geographical presence. However they are now competing with a renewed Xbox. This makes reproducing the PS4 numbers harder.

Also, why not use that incredible lead they had to diversify their portfolio even more ? Their output during the PS/PS2 era was way more diversified.

They are doing great right now but we all know how fast moving is this industry. You always have to offer something new to bring fesh blood. When a console is a roaring succes like the PS4, it is tempting to just follow the same recipe.

27./00. [NSW] Super Mario Odyssey # <ACT> (Nintendo) {2017.10.27} (¥5.980) - 3.212 / 2.024.700 <80-100%>

Hello again for Mario Odyssey. I think for retail sales that Mario 3D Land is still the number one of 3D-Marios, but Odyssey should overtake it during the next year. Including digital sales, it is already the number one for sure I guess. Well deserved :)
3d Mario

[NSW] Super Mario Odyssey <ACT> (Nintendo) {2017.10.27} (¥5.980) - 2.250.000 (until March 2019)

3D Land launched at eShop 1 year after retail release, it's expected digital sales being anemic.

They'll probably want to sell Xenoverse 3 on its graphical leap. The first 2 look similar and they'll want to make the 3rd one stand out.
dunno, whatever it looks like, it won't look as good as fighterz and Kakarot.

So I don't think that's the focus. (plus these games look so ugly I'd have little faith anyway). Esp when it'll sell better than those two games by a decent margin (unless Kakarot surprises me).
I think they'll sell it on the rpg elements and even more create character and weird story stuff. & more online interactivity

SMG2 outselling SMG... a moment most pleasing to me and my career.

Possibly because Wii never really had the "boom phase" it had in the rest of the world initially?
but even without that, I just feel that usually relatively iterative sequels on the same console do worse, unless something is going on. i.e. new franchise so sequel is when it blows up.
or heavy bundles
or changing gaming landscape before sequel, etc

SMG2 being up in japan is surprising

Wonder if Dimps will make the mistake of skipping Switch for Xenoverse 3 at launch. Xenoverse 2 sold really well on Switch despite being a late port, maybe Dimps will think they can do it again.

Who knows. Didn't the Switch version eventually pass the PS4 original? Pretty sure they can ignore that unless they are making this big 50GB game with brand new assets and all the rest of it.

I'm guessing them calling it BD2 means they will push it harder than they did Bravely Second, which was the big complaint at the time.

I remember discussing with Nirolak that if they were concerned about the sales decline they could always do Bravely Default 2 and demote Second.

I looked up Claytechworks and they are the developer of Fairy Effect

We've been getting hints about this since around when Octopath released, so it's been in the works for a hot minute.

Asano said games like Bravely and Octopath takes 3 years+ so we are looking at 2017 at the very least.

Bravely Default trying to go for that Final Fantasy scheme lol

Every new Bravely Default number indicates a new world and new characters I guess
