Don't forget the 9th months earning release of Bandai Namco for tomorrow friday february 9.
Perhaps, we will have this night some words on Takashi Mochizuki twitter account.
I hope that Bandai Namco will be more precise about Switch exclusives games.

I really hope they can bring Gal Metal to the west. The game looks both appealing and fun.

It's still pretty early in 2018, but there are already two relevant stories we can take from sales results so far: one of them is, obviously, Monster Hunter: World. The game is selling very well, far more than what most of us expected due to the game being released on a system with a limited installed base like the PS4, as well as basically missing the convenience of local multiplayer everywhere, which was one of the main reasons behind the original explosion of the brand back on PSP, as well as its continued success on 3DS. It was a very risky bet, but so far it's paying off, so congratulations to Capcom and Sony for what they achieved here.

The other big story, at least for now, it's what's going on with Switch software sales. Why, you may ask?

1) The bigger sellers: Super Mario Odyssey, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Splatoon 2 can't stop selling. In spite of their already very-high sales, customers keep on buying them alongside their systems; there are similarities with the so-called "triumvirate" back on 3DS's early 2012 (Super Mario 3D Land, Mario Kart 7 and Monster Hunter 3G). But, surprisingly enough, that's the least reason why Switch's software sales could be considered "different"

2) The amount of games charting per week: Not only the system has three bigger games selling important amounts of copies per week, but there's already an important presence in the charts from all the trackers. This is in spite of a small early 3rd party support from Japanese companies. Around 10 in Top 20 / almost half of Top 30 in Media Create (or even better as it happened this week, with 17 games out of 30) is incredibly healthy for a system not even one year old and, again, with the currently-released lineup of titles, as well as its current new releases.

3) The strength of legs across the board. But this is probably the biggest reason. Lots of Switch games just keep on selling, regardless of their release date / genre. See Xenoblade Chronicles 2 for example, a title that is approaching 200,000 units sold at retail with a rather unusually steady pace for a JRPG of its kind. Or FIFA 18, which is now basically at 80k (considering where it was last week and the fact it's 21st for Week 5, 2018) after a 13k debut, with the PS4 version being far lower in charts / out of Top 50; the price is certainly helping (5,800 Yen pre-tax compared to PS4's 7,800 Yen pre-tax), but it can't be the only reason why it's still going on. Both Super Bomberman R and Puyo Puyo Tetris (the latter as of last week at least) have returned to feature steadily in Top 50s, and they're launch games. Even a rushed late-port as One Piece: Pirate Warriors 3 is keeping on selling. And a newer release like Mario + Rabbids is showing early signs of joining the legs party already. Switch software sales were already displayin stronger post-launch sales than usual, with several titles seeing unexpected sales outside of the charts (as Media Create numbers as of December 3, 2017 clearly showed), but it's since the Holidays that (so far) the software environment has seen further improvements. This is probably a consequence of the important installed base increase + a good amount of the new userbase being ready to purchase games at unexpected levels, even if months old (see Zelda, Arms and 1-2 Switch...but the aforementioned Bomberman and PPT as well). We'll certainly have to see how far this phenomenon can go, and the industry is not as big (retail-side) as it was back in 2007-2008, but I can't overlook that there's something "DS-esque" in Switch's strong ability at having games selling for long times, especially due to how spread it is, across several genres and publishers.

I remember when the 3DS was struggling in Japan and then it was hit with MH Tri, 3D Land, and MK7 in the span of a month and a half. Those kept charting together for a long ass time. Seems like Switch is following 3DS in that regard

After the last one bombed on 3DS, it is interesting to see that Attack on Titan 2 appeared on Comgnet with 8pts thanks to the Switch version. The game is planned to release March 15th.

KT's strategy paying off ?

I was in FamilyMart yesterday getting coffee and heard an advertisement for it on the PA already. Thought it was a bit early to already be advertising, but they probably hope it to do okay.

Looking at the Time Bokan ratings it seems Level 5 is still in tune with what kids like.

what were we expecting for AoT anyway?

and for splits.
I assume PS4 will be top.

Attack on Titan did that 2 years ago :
Code:
[PSV] Attack on Titan: Wings of Freedom : 51.164 / 123.989
[PS4] Attack on Titan: Wings of Freedom : 57.650 / 114.952
[PS3] Attack on Titan: Wings of Freedom : 26.005 / 52.736

Surprisingly, Switch SKU is for now ahead on Comgnet.

I am starting to believe that there is a serious anime audience on Switch given some of the titles that exceeded expectations (Dragon Ball, One Piece...). We'll see whether it is a real trend or only anecdotal observations.

50/30/20?

(PS4/Switch/Vita)

No Vita release this time I believe.

Focusing on the Switch version for AoT2 makes sense considering that's the version that will determine how much sales grow or how much it slows the decline from the previous game.

Do you love us more than Gal Metal though.

Yeah, in all my time following Japanese gaming, and iving in Japan I have never seen anything like this. This only thing I could compare it to is the first year of Famicom (and only from stories since we have very limited data from back then).

Even titles that we think have bombed often do great numbers under the radar and pop up again months later. I can think of only a handful of Switch titles that "bombed" compared to all the underperforming titles on the 3DS, PS4, Vita, WiiU. Switch owners are hungry for software. Any software (Except Lost Spfheare) . Ports, new titles, even shovelware like Sumiko Gurashi keeps charting week after week. At first it was easy to say it was just because there were not many games out and individual titles sold better. But now there are a lot of titles out. Still 17 out of the top 30 are Switch games.

I was bullish on Switch hardware and first party software but I did not anticipate low-effort 3rd party offerings being rewarded so well. I wonder how titles will do when publishers actually put some effort in. It's exciting to watch.

That said I want PS4 to keep doing well too. I really hope all these people who jumped in for Monster Hunter World also purchase Persona 5, SotC Remake, Minna no Golf, etc. because for Japanese console gaming to stay viable we need more than 1 strong player.

It's a great time to be a gamer right now.

So the used Nintendo Switch that used to be priced at Tsutaya were droped 2000 yen since my visit last week, they also increased from 5 or so to 10 (Abenobashi Osaka). They also have new ones in stock, limited to one per costumer.

In the neighboring Big Camera though it is sold out as everytime I've came here (you can preorder one for tomorrow).

Monster Hunter is also out of stock in bic camera, but in stock at Tsutaya.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO,not SotC
ps4 has a lot of games this week.
should help software a bit I guess
tbf it's like your typical situations where a system seller doing the heavy lifting instead of the hardware, the hardware will greatly be benefited, but not the softwares

By the by. As you may know, I collect all Japanese Switch sales data. Well up 'til now I've collected them in a more simplified fashion. Well now I'm rebooting my collection to be fully complete.

To give an idea, here's the 2nd week of SMO's sales from Famitsu:

Before:

02./01. [NSW] Super Mario Odyssey (Nintendo) {2017.10.27} - 125.592 / 637.217 (-75%)

Now:

02./01. [NSW] Super Mario Odyssey # <ACT> (Nintendo) {2017.10.27} (¥5.980) - 125.592 / 637.217 <80-100%> (-75%)

My database will have all that now. Also collecting everything from ZSaberLink's posts is better than trying to to it from Dengeki itself. Why? Because Google Translate fucks up the numbers at times, so without warning I might've screwed up the collecting, so the reboot will hopefully fix that.

I won't link to the database (not allowed as it's self-advertising), but some can help with that if they wish.

The Force is strong with Sumikko Gurashi. It will likely outsell Star Wars: Battlefront II. That feels strange to even type.
