So I'm compiling the million seller list based on shipment figure for the japanese market.
I'm just over done with the games over 3 million units.
A quick statistic about the games which shipped over 3 million units:

Nintendo (include Pokémon Co): 128.75M (30 games)
Rest (Square Enix, Capcom, Level 5): 54.17M (14 games)
Total: 182.92M (44 games)

Nintendo's share (sales-wise) is 70.39% of the total.

Note: Pokemon R/G/B and Pokemon G/S are excluded from the counting since Nintendo never gave their total shipment in Japan.

As I said before, I found that MH3G for Wii U shipped 500k units as of March 2013 in the 2013 annual report.

Bruno MB found a platinum sellers page as of March 31, 2013 which shows that the 3DS version of MH3G sold 1.9 million units.

December 2012 sales can't be found on the wayback machine.

Will this suffice?

That's what I've found, I was hoping someone maybe had tracked in a spreadsheet quarter after quarter the figures in Capcom's Platinum page cause the figure as March 2013 include the western launch.

I completely forgot that the 3DS version launched in the west.

Anyway, Bruno MB found a thread on the old forum and found that MH3G stayed at 1.6 million units as of December 2012 because Capcom did not combine the sales from the budget version to the other 3DS SKU back then.

Horii should take the opportunity with Dai and make that big budget DQ ARPG he's always wanted to.

I find amusing people parroting "Japan is handheld console country therefore any handheld console will sell exceptionally well" instead of thinking why Japan got such consideration in the past.
Studying history to predict the future is only helpful if you analyze the causes and the context in which they acted that brought a certain outcome.
You'd think Vita's performance would've killed this narrative but I guess not.

To be fair it's still common to see people, both randoms and press/influencers, say stuff like "Vita sold well in Japan".

Japan is only place where it sold something.
There's the fact that the PSP remained strong in Japan throughout its life (since it had appealing software for the market) whereas it cratered almost everywhere else after the first couple of years. The Vita selling like it did was, in addition to other factors (like smartphones), a direct result of the PSP's legacy.

Bombing harder in the west doesn't mean it didn't disastrously underperform in Japan. Vita to PSP is the largest decline we've ever seen for a direct successor in the region from a major player. Even worse than N64 or PS3.

Yeah by that logic the Wii U did decent in Japan since it cratered much much harder everywhere else.

But it had even harder drops in US and Europe. Why was the drop in Japan lowest other than being handheld?

US was by decent margin biggest market for WiiU. That is opposite of Vita. in Europe it cratered harder than in other regions but before Switch Wii was only Nintendo home console selling somewhat well in Europe so it wasn't that surprising,

The drop from Wii to Wii U was also smaller in Japan than anywhere else. Your own argument's still working against you here.

I don't think Vita was missing many IPs from PSP, the obvious big ones being MonHun and Gran Turismo.

That's my point. The drop was more steep elsewhere than Japan, and even discounting Europe the drop in the Americas alone is massive. Had the Wii U dropped by a similar percent in Japan it would have ended fairly below 3 million.

Vita didn't do that well in Japan, but it did better than other territories. It's basically a worse version of the Saturn in that regard. Sure Saturn got by the N64 in Japan but it was creamed by it in every other market and both were absolutely destroyed by the PlayStation.

Everything about the PS Vita was expensive despite how big a leap in tech it was over PSP. Nintendo earned a lot of good will dropping the price of the 3DS 5 months after launch, even in the midst of a recession and while the country was recovering from disaster. Sony on the other hand kept the Vita it's same high launch price for 15 months. By the time Sony tried to stop the bleeding Capcom and Squeenix already had their million-sellers and that was all she wrote.

In that time Uncharted, Resistance, LBP and PS All-Stars all came out but... Lol

Sony was outgunned and out-maneuvered.

Funny also how PSV got a pretty amazing launch line-up with more than 20 retail releases among which Uncharted, Minna no Golf, Ridge Racer, Disgaea, Dynasty Warriors, Kamaitachi no Yoru, Katamari, Dream C Club, Marvel Vs. Capcom plus new IPs from Square Enix and Konami like Lord of Apocalypse (remake of Lord of Arcana but still) and Army Corps of Hell.

This really puts it into perspective how much a launch line up means for the success of a console.

The PS4 outsold the Vita in Japan though.

🤷‍♂️

Worldwide:
PS4 = 125-130 million lifetime
Vita = 13-16 million (?)
Difference = 681% to 900%

Japan
PS4 = 9.5-10 million lifetime (?)
PSV = 5.86 million
Difference = 62% to 71%

The point still stand. (i know you was sarcastic but let's make things clear in case someone thought you was serius)

What a weird question. We know that PSV received decent support from Japanase publishers until recently, while US publishers including Sonys biggest Studios stopped supporting the system very early in its lifecycle. Without the Japanese support sales would have looked even worse in Japan.

I mean yes because Wii was way more successful outside of Japan (I wonder why is that...). There was way more room to drop. I can't remember last console that had its sales skew as hard to Japan as Vita though.

The PS4 outsold the Vita in Japan though.

🤷‍♂️

I mean yes with every third party game under the sun releasing on it. Compare the top selling games on both platforms.

I mean yes because Wii was way more successful outside of Japan (I wonder why is that...). There was way more room to drop. I can't remember last console that had its sales skew as hard to Japan as Vita though.

Sadly you need more then just games on a home console in japan. Even if the ps4 had games like smash, Mario, splatoon and the other games Nintendo have released on wii u I couldn't see it selling over 14M. To get above that 20M mark it needs to be portable and have big games.

Switch top 10 for next 4 weeks must be considered a real possibility. Everything turns around Switch these holidays.

This:
I find amusing people parroting "Japan is handheld console country therefore any handheld console will sell exceptionally well" instead of thinking why Japan got such consideration in the past.
Studying history to predict the future is only helpful if you analyze the causes and the context in which they acted that brought a certain outcome.

Is still correct because the Vita didn't sell exceptionally well, the PSP sold 20 million units while the Vita has sold less than 6 million units in Japan, that's a 70% drop for lifetime sales.

You mention how PS4 had the best third party support compared to the Vita but you are actually bringing up points that support what is said in that quote from Celine.

Expectations for Brain Training are very low. Price isn't high but there isn't much interest for it, from Nintendo or customers. Digital sales could be good since it's a small size game and even cheaper at eShop.

PSP was also more successful outside Japan though. Last console that skewed as strong or stronger to Japan as Vita was probably the Saturn (over 50%). Skewing strongly towards Japan doesn't mean Vita didn't bomb in Japan though, both can be true.
