Awesome numbers all around. I have a Japanese and an European account on my switch, and it seems incredible to me N Japan is still promoting vouchers, and the American side just nuke them. I am planning to buy one for Animal crossing (if applicable) and FE#SMT.
I wonder how many people are saving a voucher for Animal Crossing...

I just love how Harada and some others believed that you can only crush the 1m barrier with big shiny graphics and then you have Asano coming with a 2D old-school JRPG and crushing that milestone in 3 weeks lol.
The denial some of these devs have is astounding. Not knowing how xenoblade 2 sold is also funny if they were doing a market analysis for xenosaga.

I hope this tales does well and finally elevates the series given it's history, but I can't help but wonder how he'd respond to an interviewer asking him why it sold less than xenoblade 2.

And how are the shipments of Xenoblade 2?
Worldwide

Xenoblade Chronicles 2
Q3 2017 - 1,06m
Q4 2017 - 0,25m / 1,31m
Q1 2018 - 0,11m / 1,42m
Q2 2018 - 0,11m / 1,53m
Q3 2018 - 0,12m / 1,65m
Q4 2018 - 0,08m / 1,73m

Octopath Traveler
Q2 2018 < 1,00m (west)
Q2-Q3 2018 - 1,08m (west)
Q2-Q4 2018 - 1,17m (west)

I'm not so sure, Octopath Traveler shipments were somewhere between 330 and 420k in Japan by March.

If LTD by now is close to 400k Tales won't have an easy fight.

Oh yea I forgot Octopath has much higher sales than GDL's number due to shortage.
Maybe it'd be closer than I thought.
From GDL, Berseria's shipment was apparently even lower:
220,719 for PS4 version and 112,757 for PS3 version.

If Arise has another decline in Japan the fight will be close with Octopath Traveler. In any case it won't be an easy win for Tales.

You know that PlayStation 4 is a better plateform for third party games in Japan, right? Switch software sales are amazing because Nintendo games (and Minecraft. And Bandai Namco family games) do incredibly well, but it doesn't mean it's true for every third party game. If we look at games released the same day this year on both PlayStation 4 and Switch:

Tales of Vesperia: Definitive Edition : 64.727 (PS4) VS 40.918 (NSW)
Nelke & the Legendary Alchemists: Ateliers of the New World : 24.874 (PS4) VS 10.872 (NSW)
Nobunaga's Ambition: Taishi with Power-Up Kit: 22.438 (PS4) VS 3.951 (NSW)
Atelier Lulua: The Scion of Arland: 31.600 (PS4) VS 17.208 (NSW)
Chocobo's Mystery Dungeon: Every Buddy!: 37.467 (PS4) VS 46.360 (NSW)
Super Robot Wars T: 102.767 (PS4) VS 51.101 (NSW)
Winning Post 9: 22.848 (PS4) VS 6.565 (NSW)
Langrisser I & II: 15.254 (PS4) VS 9.031 (NSW)
Attack on Titan 2: Final Battle: 22.884 (PS4) VS 37.879 (NSW)
Olympic Games Tokyo 2020: The Official Video Game: 13.551 (PS4) VS 50.889 (NSW)
Oninaki: 20.529 (PS4) VS 18.497 (NSW)
FIFA 20: 64.838 (PS4) VS 18.224 (NSW)
NBA 2K20: 21.845 (PS4) VS 4.419 (NSW)
Atelier Ryza Ever Darkness & the Secret Hideout: 68.047 (PS4) VS 31.309 (NSW)
Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night: 14.340 (PS4) VS 7.677 (NSW)
Dragon Quest X: Ibara No Miko To Horobi No Kami Online: 16.898 (PS4) VS 36.652 (NSW)
SD Gundam G Generation Cross Rays: 74.845 (PS4) VS 52.362 (NSW)

(All numbers are from Game Data Library. I only counted games which did more than 10k+ on at least one plateform)

13 games did more sales on PlayStation 4, only 4 on Switch.

Now, if we make a list of the best seling third party games released this year in Japan:
  1. Kingdom Hearts III (PS4): 838.927
  2. Monster Hunter: World - Iceborne (PS4): 468.901
  3. Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age - Definitive Edition (NSW): 443.927
  4. Resident Evil 2 (PS4): 393.688
  5. Yo-kai Watch 4 (NSW): 289.771
  6. Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice (PS4): 260.223
  7. Pro Baseball Spirits 2019 (PS4): 245.050
  8. Fishing Spirits: Nintendo Switch Version (NSW): 243.913
  9. Persona 5 Royal (PS4): 235.138
  10. Ace Combat 7 (PS4): 215.421
  11. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare (PS4): 196.510
  12. Jikkyou Powerful Pro Baseball (NSW): 186.221
  13. Devil May Cry V (PS4): 183.627
  14. Super Dragon Ball Heroes: World Mission (NSW): 125.308
  15. Jump Force (PS4): 125.057
  16. Anthem (PS4): 114.570
  17. Tom Clancy's The Division 2 (PS4): 112.238
  18. eFootball Winning Eleven 2020 (PS4): 104.900
  19. Story of Seasons: Friends of Mineral Town (NSW): 104.157
  20. Super Robot Wars T (PS4): 102.767
(All games which did more than 100k. Again, from Game Data Library, which doesn't include the last few weeks yet)

The two best selling new third party games on the year are on PlayStation 4. 14 of those 20 games are on PlayStation 4.

If you can release your game on both PlayStation 4 and Switch, at a small cost, you really should do it. But if it would be too expensive, especially if you publish an AAA, PlayStation 4 is fine.

Taiko no Tatsujin: Drum 'N' Fun! did more than 100k in 2019. Dragon Quest Builders 2 also, but the game has been released December the 20th, so it was expected.

Because the market between PlayStation 4 and Switch seems really different. Games which do well on Switch aren't the one who do well on PlayStation 4 and vice-versa, with only a few exceptions. Also, Warner Bros. released Mortal Kombat 11 on Switch the same day in the US this year. It sold much more on Switch than on PlayStation 4 or on Xbox One.

I know, it's the japanese thread, but every data we have shows that AAA do well on PlayStation and that they probably wouldn't do as well on Switch.

Do these numbers take in market share promotion? I'd be much more interested in seeing percentages. Raw numbers of software sales without considering how many consoles there are is kind of deceptive...

Userbase will have ceased to be a factor at some point this year and at this point that would imply that Switch SKUs should always sell better.

That's true, there is room for slight differences in preferences between different console owners and different buying habits, looking at raw numbers never tells the whole story.

didn't know octopath ended up getting that high.

still wish it got closer to 500k. Not sure what I originally predicted, only that it'd be above xeno2

I guess I was basing it off of Piston's charts. Seems like they've been selling a lot of software below the top 30? Also, where'd you find that data out of curiosity?

It's almost guaranteed Tales of Arise will sell less than XB2 and Octopath worldwide, unless it has a lot of surprises in terms of gameplay and story.
I'm expecting it to be just another tales with fancier graphic effects.
Best selling Tales is still Destiny at 1m LTD, not counting its remake.

Tales is the bigger franchise in JP.
It'd be an epic bomb if it sells less than XB2 or Octopath there.
You meant Zestiria?
It didn't do so well in Japan. Last info was 400k shipped.
Wiki says 450k Steam, but there's no link to back that number.
Maybe it did reach 1m too, but most likely won't be much more than that, and still far from XB2 or Octopath.

Both Xillia and Zestiria are above 1M, and Zestiria by a big margin (above 1.2M is more likely thanks to the bonus of being the first Tales on Steam)

With the regular decline, 350k shipped LTD should be the expected (retail+digital, so think >250k physical), however it will be the the first proper Tales on PS4 so it could see some return to form like Xillia had by being the first proper Tales on PS3 so maybe something in the 350-500k range is doable, still too early to tell though.

Do you mean to launch exclusively? Cause Berseria launched on PS4 with the PS3 version.

Media Create White Papers are in the archive thread.

Xenoblade 2 sold 65k at retail in Japan in 2018, it's safe to assume shipments for it are at 350-400k too by now.

Xenoblade also benefited from the vouchers programm. We saw the game chartinh high in digital charts after the start of the programm.

I would say this is a completely different situation from Xillia.

I wish Nintendo would start expanding their studios to create some nice AA jRPGs to provide Switch owners what thirdies don't seem interesting on doing.

Something like RPG Factory but good.

At this point its clear that 3rd party just don't care for Nintendo and their consoles, unless when it come to some very specific types of games.
Theyve already expanded their studios to provide AA jrpgs. If it wasent for square enix they would be the Kings of it

Staggering. Though to be fair BOIIII was very successful for a COD game.

I would say this is a completely different situation from Xillia.

I don't know yet, I'm merely raising the possibility, the series will have had a 4 years hiatus by the game release, it should be treated as the 25th series anniversary title and is the first current gen title and is making it obvious on the visual front. PS4 install base should be more than mature to allow this kind of game to perform.
We're probably more than half a year away from the release though, so we're lacking too many elements to know what the title's potential will really be, for all we know Bamco might bank fully on the west and just do the usual push in Japan for 300-350k sales, but maybe they'll try the same way they did with Xillia

Hype for Xillia in Japan is something that won't happen again for another Tales title.

At that time it was seen as the return to home after several entries on DS, PSP, Xbox and Wii.

Both Graces and Vesperia already had their extended rerelease for PS3 and they sold well for what they were, on that part Xillia was nothing new and didn't look like that different coming from Graces, what changed was that they really went all out on... everything outside the core game, marketing, character design, anime cutscenes and so on using the 15th series anniversary as an excuse, and it worked in spite of the game itself.
If they put a decent effort on Arise there is a possibility of raising the series potential once again, not as high as Xillia did (650k), these days are gone, but higher than the titles that came afterwards (Xillia 2 450k and Zestiria-Berseria 400k)

I'm not betting on anything yet, just leaving the window open.

That decline in only a year is very weird. Someone mentionned that the BOPS branding is stronger in Japan so that might explain some of it. We will know next year with BOPS5.
Although didn't that CoD do so well partly because of Monster Hunter World players were looking for another game to play? This entry of CoD sold really poorly though...

The transition to digital is likely more aggressive on Western titles. Dont see how the PS5 rebounds at retail knowing what we know

There won't be a rebound if Japanese developers are quicker this time with more cross platform games.

But these are all theoretical until we see price and launch line up.
With BC, every PS4 game will be cross-platform so it will be better than the PS3 -> PS5 transition in that regard. Or do you mean PS5 enhanced ?

Who wants to spend $500 to play PS4 games? If japanese developers dont differentiate their next gen games early I dont see PS5 having a strong start in Japan.
