Famitsu will give December monthly data soon but as a preliminary report:

Switch is 25% up comparing to December 2017
Nintendo as a publisher sold 3,5m+ copies of software at retail, up from 2m of last December
Let's Go second month is close to Ultra Sun and Moon second month but the anemic opening keeps YTD very low.

This is already known, right, since we have the weekly numbers and can just add it up?

Yep will do, but still all things considered Pokemon Lets Go underperformed in Japan.

Yes. I've been hoping for ages the ps4 would have 2018's top seller because it's the only chance it has to achieve such a feat and I don't think a playstation has pulled that off since the ps2 days.

Is it something to be thankful about? o.O
Do you own Sony or what? That's such a weird sentiment to have unless one owns Sony ... or is a fanboy I guess

It depends on what kind of expectation you had back in January.
There were some that believed that after the end of shortage in Japan (that happened in early January) the Switch would have seen crazy sales.

Switch's shortages continued well into March and April if I recall, though not to the extent of 2017 where I didn't see a single switch being sold.

There is nothing wrong in wanting things, whatever they might be.

You just need to not be too obnoxious, obsessed or intellectual dishonest over them.

I don't think so.
But maybe my memory is failing me.

I still find it crazy that a franchise that wasn't even around 5 years ago is the Switch's top seller. Splatoon is just ridiculous.

The (expected) failure of Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story + Bowser Jr.'s Journey stings even more when someone remembers how the original is the best selling title in the franchise, not just in Japan (Famitsu, via GameDataLibrary)

[NDS] Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story - 220.055 / 745.701 (Nintendo) {11/02/2009}

Well, the PSP did with Monster Hunter in 2008. These numbers were provided by the_lascar.
Lascar, if you read this, I love you :)

That's just PR speak for "Yeah, not interested in Switch version anymore, sorry".

I don't really think so, if this was the case the game wouldn't have been announced in the first place, in fact its kinda obvious that Switch is becoming the next main platform for visual novels. technical difficulties/challenges are not only associated with the graphics of a game. in fact every software has its unique challenges that people don't feel or know about because programmers/developers are very professional and extremely dedicated to what they do.

The problem with the 24th day being in week 52 wasn't this week's drop but week 51 being weaker than usual.
If we compare the drops with a year with the same place for the days, we can use year 2012 and 3DS. (famitsu numbers)

Hardware
3DS Week 50, 2012 (10 Dec - 16 Dec) - 333.409
3DS Week 51, 2012 (17 Dec - 23 Dec) - 433.788 (+30%)
3DS Week 52, 2012 (24 Dec - 30 Dec) - 266.790 (-38%)

Hardware
Switch Week 50, 2018 (10 Dec - 16 Dec) - 285.513
Switch Week 51, 2018 (17 Dec - 23 Dec) - 300.661 (+5%)
Switch Week 52, 2018 (24 Dec - 30 Dec) - 186.806 (-38%)

The drop for week 52 for both systems is the same. It's just that Switch was basically flat in week 51, with a very small increase. We were expecting much more that week.

Switch shortage ended after holidays.

Not in Tokyo at least; it may have been different in the rest of Japan though. Small shops near my place (Shimokita, not exactly a remote location...) had signs saying that they were not taking reservations nor had available Switch at least until March, and it was still being sold above market price on Amazon from what I recall. Also, Labi Shibuya where I used to go almost daily (for the massage chairs after training) at that time was out of stock during that time.
It may have been much easier to find a Switch than in 2017, which I did not deny in my message, but you could certainly not just walk in a store and come out with a Switch.

Amazon returned to MSRP for Switch since late December and never went out of stock since then. Supply may have been limited but if you wanted to buy a Switch with a little search you could. It was far from a sell out situation after holidays.

Is it possible the price is an issue ? I mean the 3DS was much cheaper.

Many smaller things were added for making this unexpected week 51 result a reality. But I still can't find a very good explanation that justifies flat sales from 50 to 51.

Smash was one of the last games released in 2018 and it becomes the best selling game of 2018. Impressive

Also, let me add Week 1 2013 just to show what should we expect tomorrow. (Famitsu again)

Hardware
3DS Week 50, 2012 (10 Dec - 16 Dec) - 333.409
3DS Week 51, 2012 (17 Dec - 23 Dec) - 433.788 (+30%)
3DS Week 52, 2012 (24 Dec - 30 Dec) - 266.790 (-38%)
3DS Week 1, 2013 (31 Dec - 6 Jan) - 305.690 (+15%)

~215k for Switch if it follows the same trend.

So how many months before the Switch outsells the PS4 in Japan? Can't be too far now.

Do you think Smash's incredible sales say more about the growth of the Switch, or the growth of the Smash IP? Combination of both?

Because we're going to see Smash blow by the other sellers on Switch, many of which are IP which historically have sold more, is that not right?

I am curious to see how Animal Crossing does compared to Smash, since that's traditionally been an absolute monster. But I remember Nintendo saying that the Switch has not really caught on with the female audience yet, and they are a big part of Animal Crossing sales.

smash nailed so many aspects that generated hype and sales. amazing newcomers ,marketing , short time between announcement and release, directs, and many more.

not sure other ip will generate that much hype during the switch era. animal crossing is more of a leggy title , i think next year pokemon will be the title that leads the hype

edit : this year !!

When was the last time we got demographics information speaking of that? That's another way to judge this year wrt Switch as Nintendo said broadening the Switch's user base was a focus for them this year.

New Leaf came out at 7 November 2012 in Japan and shipped 2,73m until the end of December and 3,80m until the end of March.

3,80m in 5 months with massive shortage in 2012.

Thanks, I was wondering about this since it's a game that keeps coming back in the top 50/30. I thought maybe it was all about the legs in the very long term (kinda like mario kart), but that's truly huge, especially since it did around 600k FW iirc
