Why do people keep ignoring the Lets Go has a significantly higher price than USUM and other portable Pokémon titles? Unit sales aren't everything, despite how fixated ERA is on them.
Because price isn't very important. Of course, it matters ; this is why sales exist. But PES won't become FIFA only because it is cheaper.

Super Smash Bros. for 3DS was cheaper than Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, but it did worse. Yes, Pokémon Let's Go is more expensive and Switch userbase is smaller, but it doesn't explain everything.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate sell two times more units than Pokémon Let's Go. But on 3DS, almost every Pokémon game (X/Y, ORAS, Sun/Moon ; USUL is only slightly below) did better than Super Smash Bros. for 3DS. So why, suddenly, Super Smash Bros. becomes more attractive than Pokémon? Two possibilities:
  • Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is more attractive than previous SSB games and Pokémon Let's Go is less attractive than previous Pokémon games.
  • The Switch audience prefer the Smash Bros. IP.

I think both are true. Even if Switch is an handheld, it's the more expensive handheld ever released by Nintendo. So Nintendo needs a cheaper model for casuals, because Pokémon targets more casuals than Super Smash Bros. And Pokémon Let's Go doesn't interest japanese games.

It's a little more complicated as Pokémon was previously exclusively handheld, while Mario, Zelda, Smash, MK, Kirby, etc. all have home console releases so consumers aren't really paying more than past generations compared to Pokémon.

SMO vs SM3DLand, MK8D vs MK7, and let's not even get into BotW vs any 3DS Zelda game... Switch consumers are paying way more for those games and yet they will all outsell their 3DS counterparts. It's obvious Let's GO hasn't resonated entirely well with the Japanese Switch audience when compared to many other franchises.

Also week 1 is typically strong for Sony hardware, though I don't recall the exact reason.

If i remember correctlyChirstmas is usually for presents and New Year for money, PS demographic tends to be teenagers and young adults which don't get that much for christmas but can use the money they get for New Year to buy a console.

This is only a theory, but in Japan it's common to give money for the new year, so young people buy gifts for themselves, and generally Sony stuff is "cooler" or more "trendy" than Nintendo stuff that is more "giftable"; so in Christmas it's the parents buying for their kids and in W1 it's the kids buying for themselves.

Uh. I'm good.

Lol...all I'm saying is. These games are going to be very very big games.

Mario kart broke records
Smash did
Donkey Kong did
Zelda did
Why wouldnt animal crossing and Pokemon gen 8 do the same, when they are Japan's biggest games....

What record did Donkey Kong broke on Switch?
Conversely Zelda broke which record exactly? Best selling Zelda since Zelda II (1.6M)? (It's probably gonna surpass that and Zelda I soon enough though)
And the same way which one for MK8D, fastest selling MK maybe ? MKDS MK WII and Super Mario Kart are still ahead LTD for now (3.5-4M)

Sure everything is selling well and breaking records but not all are doing it and not all at the same pace.

That missed the point of what I was saying. SMO had 3D World for the same price. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe had Mario Kart 8. BOTW had every other 3D Zelda. Consumers are used to paying console prices for console releases. Pokemon didn't have a main series release on home consoles, so there's no precedent for the home console price point. The closest thing is Pokken, which isn't even the same genre.

It's more because of the age of people receiving money.

Anyway, it's not that Sony is stronger in absolute terms in Week 1... It gets bigger boosts overall but Nintendo is clearly winning in weekly sales.

That should finally throw the Online Sub theory out of the window, as discussed bundle being discontinued is probably the main reason after all

It's reassuring but MK8D is still ahead, Splatoon might have gotten a bigger boost in proportion but in raw sales MK8D still had the bigger one (actually Minecraft had the bigger boost proportion wise even :p)

But that doesn't in anyway challenge what I'm saying. Splatoon 2 sales declined not due to the release of the Online Subscription but rather the Bundle discontinuation. Talking about how MK8D or Minecraft are doing relatively better - doesn't really change this(especially when both games have sold considerably fewer copies and thus there is fewer second hand copies that people could potentially buy).

MK8D online play is also locked behind sub, no?

Yes but MK8D has local multiplayer play unlike Splatoon.
We'll see how things go from now but MK8D might outsell Splatoon 2 in the long term (I'm thinking of 2021 or something like that and both titles should still sell reasonable amounts a couple years after that)

It tends to show the impact of paid online play doesn't seem to be too big
it might however still be the deciding factor between MK8D and Splatoon 2 about which one will sell more LTD (talking about >4M number here), this is a long game and we should still be there a few years down the line, we'll see.

My post was more a reply about sfortunato quote that you were yourself quoting in the end.

Ahh ok Fisico

MK8D didn't have a bundle, while Splatoon 2 did - that to me is the major factor between the two.
While if you are looking at COMG second hand sales you'd notice that generally Splatoon 2 is selling much more than MK8D for an year now. When the White Book releases I'm sure we will see higher second hand sales for Splatoon 2 compared to MK8D.

Also Splatoon 2 has local multiplayer you just need more than one Switch, which in Japan is actually viable in certain circumstances.

Maybe Go wasn't as popular in Japan as it was in the west? One has to wonder if Let's Go really lured people into buying a Switch or buying the game period, and got to see how many people that bought the game aren't just part of the people who usually buy Pokémon games. I wonder if it's up to Nintendo/TPC expectations.

I'd say if square really wanted to, they could have a had a switch version of KH3 ready by now

Or at least the collections.

I don't even know where the SMP will get DLC train came from

It's never been announced, in general games that got DLC or post launch support it was mentioned before release or around release.

One Switch and one additional Splatoon 2 copy for each Switch no?

Does local multiplayer with multiple consoles and one copy still exist with some games btw?

Yes, that's right - I think its a thing between friends and after school. Especially with Nintendo's push for Splatoon 2 becoming an e-Sport in Japan and the games huge popularity.

In terms of local multiplayer I think I've read about 3rd party games and indies with such features but can't name one

The idea is that popular games with online component like MK8 and Splatoon 2 will drive the adoption to the online subscription.
Why do you think Nintendo put on sales MK8, Splatoon and ARMS on eshop?

Wait what? Is that confirmed (or people just assuming)? Not the PC port (it's been rated by ESRB), the lack of extra content. specifically. That's just dumb and extra weird (but then again, that's SEGA Europe for you).

Yeah, it's confirmed.
It does features the japanese audio track but no Full Body content.

I guarantee it's Atlus and SEGA JPN's doing, definitely not SEGA EU's fault... if it weren't for them there would be no Catherine on PC at all.

Here's some year-end charts:

76jZGEG.png

The PS4 was down only slightly in 2018 thanks to the Monster Hunter boost early in the year; if you go by just the Q2 to Q4 period, the PS4 was down 21.3% YoY, demonstrating that the system is well past its peak. The 3DS is way down and the Vita is slowly fading away, thus marking the end of the traditional handheld in Japan. The Switch was up over 2017, but only because of the holiday rally caused by Pokemon Let's Go and Smash. It really needs a price cut or a lower-priced hardware revision if it really wants to take off in Japan, as while it's selling very well it's still trailing the 3DS launch-aligned as it's being held back by that ¥30,000 price tag.
