Didn't expect Chris to make a thread based on leaked numbers without the person directly allowing it. But I guess Gibson does openly post on Twitter.

If you want to go higher WoW (and YoY) during holiday weeks, use a 3rd party musou instead of any of the 1st party heavy hitters

- Nintendo circa 2020

What was the point of launching the PS5 with no hardware to support the launch and no software to carry it

If anything, that's how you kill any frontward momentum

Correct me if I'm wrong, but it looks like Konami is promoting Momotaro Dentetsu by having Vtubers play the game:

If we take 2/7ths off of the 284,827 units that Nintendo Switch had in Week 1 of 2020 (because it included December 30th and 31st of 2019), then the console is at 5,875,620 for 2020 up through December 27th.

This puts Nintendo Switch 124,380 units behind hitting the 6,000,000 mark for 2020.

However...this also means that we can accept 5/7ths of next week's sales, as part of 2020's total.

If Nintendo Switch sells at least 175,000 units next week, then 5/7ths of that will be 125,000 units that we can add to 2020's total and call it 6 million for the year.

Looking at PS4vPS5 this week makes me wonder if previous gen hardware (from the same hardware manufacturer) has ever outsold current gen hardware in a week or could next week possibly be a first??

Gibson used 5 weeks last year vs 4 weeks this year to compare december which shows a 14% yoy drop. Instead, a 4 week comparison show that this year had a slightly better december. Either way it looks like Q3 Japan is actually slightly up compared to last year, thanks for correcting me P Diddy.

Would be nice to see if the PS5 did like a magical 100k from some miracle shipment for the end of the year holidays. Would have made it more exciting imo.

No, it's actually slightly up: CY2019 Q4 was 1.975 million, while CY2020 will be at 2.002 million.

Literally Sony sent the PS5 to die.

Yeah. PS5 had less stock for the whole holiday season in Japan than in UK for launch weekend.

Several times. PS2 outsold PS3 several times weekly as did PSP when it comes to Vita. Even PS1 outsold PS2 during some weeks in the summer of 2000 thanks to the launch of PSOne. We can also go even bigger than just few weeks. PSP outsold Vita in yearly sales in 2012.

I must've took the wrong difference somewhere, thanks for correcting me. I am probably wrong about december comparison too...
You were right about the December comparison. I'm waiting for Week 1 to make an actual comparison between December based on NPD weeks so it's easier to compare Japan to US figures.

Xbox Series is already at 30K? Crazy. If they don't botch anything in Japan might actually pass the XB1 and not take 6 years to do it.

The Stussining
PS5 shipments have been so anemic I question why Sony bothered launching in Japan at all. Curious is if it was just so they could go to major publishers and say "we launched day and date in japan"

They make up for it with My Nintendo Store bundles I presume. ~43K can't be too high of an expectation can it?

As I stressed in previous threads, to publishers it doesn't really matter why PS5 is selling so bad. They approved development and release schedules following some hardware sales expectations which weren't definitely as pessimistic. So it will become problematic to release games on such a tiny installed base, especially for those publishers who still rely a lot on domestic sales (not only small publishers but also bigger ones).

PSOne did help PS1 to sell revitalize hardware sales in Japan but its launch (Week 27, 2000) didn't allow the platform to outsell PS2 until Week 30. Then PS1 outsold PS2 in August especially thanks to the launch of Dragon Quest VII which went to become the highest selling PS1 game ever (it's one of the few games that sold 1m units during the second week).

GBA outsold DS in Week 37, 2005, but only thanks to the release of GBA Micro. This happened very rarely for Nintendo platforms as they have a more skewed lifecycle.

I had a feeling Switch hardware would disappoint. Still great sales, but it has struggled to go much over 300K for the biggest Christmas holiday weeks the past several years.

Gibson also just gave some YoY data for some titles:
Plugging in last years numbers gives me WoW %changes of around 50%. So it seems like the holidays was when the increased install base really started to show its effects.
