Hopefully Metal Gear survives this desaster. It`s such an famous IP and one linked to Playstation history. But at the same time it reflects Konamis fall as a successful publisher (on consoles). So i have not much hope.

It looks like a silent release. I have even forgotten it was releasing. There is not much marketing for this game and no hype.
Such a weird direction to take with the franchise. Was originally supposed to be a quick release but dev time took way longer than expected (and presumably cost a lot more too)
Remakes and remasters are probably what Konami is limited to now

I see Kojima has 700k followers on instagram after just a few weeks. I think its pretty clear how attached the MGS fanbase is to him. Survive is not picking up new players with its weird GZ affiliations...its just an unappealing package all around.

This was their lineup for the current fiscal year on consoles:

  • Super Bomberman R, Nintendo Switch
  • Metal Gear Survive, PC, PS4 and Xbox One
  • PES 2018, PC, PS4 and Xbox One
PES is what it is and bombermans relative success was linked to the switch launch. With Metal Gear Survive bombing while announcing great profits at investor meetings Konami has been successfully transformed into a mobile gaming company.

Besides MHW for obvious reasons since it's the strongest 3rd Party IP right now on consoles, the games really sold quite bad on PS4 so far this year. FF:Dissidia, DW9, Metal Gear, Secret of Mana etc.
There have been some big underperformers last year too. Gran Turismo Sport, Minna no Golf, Yakuza Kiwami 2, the new [email protected], Resident Evil VII, Taiko no Tatsujin, Gravity Rush 2 (though this depends on expectations) and, specifically to Japan, Tekken 7 and Final Fantasy XII didn't do hot either.

To be perfectly honest, a good chunk of those games have problems going beyond a userbase fully focused on buying one specific game, i.e. they don't look interesting, or they're flat out unappealing. Maybe the console itself is the least of problems for most of them, due to their reception. Basically, I don't think releasing these games on a system with a bigger, wider adoption from the market would've solved most of the problems that are strictly linked to the projects behind them.

I think this kind of argument fits better with most of the recent anime tie-ins from Bandai Namco (with Taiko no Tatsujin being the biggest example IMHO).

I'd be all over a new 2d castlevania. Even a remaster of the ds games on switch would be fantastic.

I'm assuming we'll get much more switch support after bombermans success

This is super unfortunate, I'm not even sure why dissidia underperformed pretty much everywhere

Valkyria Chronicles 4 is one of the bigger upcoming titles, will be interesting to see how it performs, PS4 version even has advantage of time exclusivity. And after MHW cooled down a bit. Launching after the main marketing campaign more often than not goes wrong.

Sure, there is always the possibility to blow up these problems as the main reason, but the main problem still is the simple fact that PS4 just doesn't push insane amount of software in Japan. FF15 saw a huge decline, a game with very high production values and accordingly huge marketing campaign, DQ11 PS4, with general positive reception, also doesn't come anywhere close to past successes, despite having similar advantages to MHW (actually an even higher graphical jump) and didn't perform that much better than FF15. Even MHW expectedly will see clear decline.

Games like Tekken and this years DBFighterz also aren't games, that had negative receptions, sales still haven't been great. Especially Anime licences underperformed recently.

they should just upload Metal Gear Survive on moddb.com and walk away from it

I don't see MG's future as AAA particularly bright but the IP is still valuable so I guess we will be seeing it again in some shape or form.

About the incoming Attack on Titan I feel like that, even though it will most likely be down from the first entry, it still has some decent potential.
Looking at the overall picture regarding the IP, its peak of popularity was in late 2013 early 2014, thanks to the anime adaptation, you can see various numbers below.

AOT manga sales

2012 : 2.7M
2013 : 15.9M (3 new volumes at 1.95M, 1.9M, 1.45M)
2014 : 11.7M (3 new volumes at 1.9M, 1.9M, 1.7M)
2015 : 8.8M (3 new volumes at 2M 1.9M 1.8M)
2016 : 6.5M (3 new volumes at 1.9M 1.75M 1.55M)
2017 : 6.6M (3 new volumes at 1.7M 1.65M 1.45M)
They stopped getting new readers massively after 2015 basically with 2013 & 2014 being the years where there were massive catalog sales following the broadcasting of the anime.

Now looking at the games

AoT Games
3DS Attack on Titan: Humanity in Chains 89.448 311.556 Spike Chunsoft 05/12/2013
3DS Attack on Titan: Humanity in Chains - Chain 19.172 116.145 Spike Chunsoft 04/12/2014

PSV Attack on Titan: Wings of Freedom 51.164 123.989 Koei Tecmo 18/02/2016
PS4 Attack on Titan: Wings of Freedom 57.650 114.952 Koei Tecmo 18/02/2016
PS3 Attack on Titan: Wings of Freedom 26.005 52.736 Koei Tecmo 18/02/2016

3DS Attack on Titan: Escape from Certain Death 11.451 17.724 Koei Tecmo 11/05/2017
3DS Attack on Titan 2: Future Coordinates 10.402 36.767 Spike Chunsoft 30/11/2017
I think it paints a pretty clear picture that the first 3DS game released at the best possible time, late 2013 early 2014, which is why despite clearly being a low effort it managed outstanding sales with a LTD above 300k and a simple extended rerelease above 100k.
On the other hand the Koei Tecmo title missed the best possible window for its release schedule, instead being there right when the franchise began to stabilize in term of manga sales, considering it was a much higher effort and a good product overall I do think it should have been able to clear half a million had it switched place with Spike Chunsoft game but it failed to meet that potential.

The two later games on 3DS are a bit more anecdotal, Escape from Certain Death is a Visual Novel with limited appeal from the get go and Future Coordinates is a sequel of a games that probably didn't left a good impression on a heavily declining 3DS software sales environment.
Mind its sales are dissapointing nevertheless (and I'm a bit puzzled how it took more than 3 years and missed the second season broadcasting for Koei Tecmo to release it) and could be a cause for concern, but overall I don't think it changes a lot in the whole picture for AoT2 potential sales.

- AoT on PS3/PSV/PS4 had already its sales potential limited by its release window
- There's a decent untapped audience on Nintendo ecosystem as illustrated by the first AoT game

With DQH 2 we already saw how the decline for musou sequel collaboration could be alleviated with a proper new SKU (here the Vita), AoT2 seems to fit the same pattern here (here NSW) and I do think it could have a decent chance to reach at least 200k LTD accross platforms, considering a ~130k opening allowed AoT to manage 300k, an opening around 80-100k should be fine for AoT2, legs should also be helped at least slightly by the third anime season scheduled for this summer.

I love SotN-style Castlevania as much as the next guy, but the genre is doing just fine without Konami's input right now. Some absolutely fantastic indie Metroidvanias out there. Unfortunately for Metal Gear fans, there's nothing else on the market quite like Metal Gear.

Man I would love for them to take that IP seriously again though. The first three games are still among the best horror games ever made, and even the more middling efforts like The Room, Origins, and Shattered Memories are still better than most other horror games out there.

What does a Silent Hill game even sell though?

I wouldnt be surprised if a Castlevania game shows up this year for example.
I didn't want to detract the success of Super Bomberman R. For it's IP the game did amazing. But it can't compensate the loss in relevance of AAA-franchises like Metal Gear.

I can imagine AA-games like Bomberman or the suggested Castlevania game selling well for what they are. But Konamis core business is now mobile. Their console games are only side projects not determining the fate of the company.

A game like Bomberman for example was low risk, low budget and has high profit margins. But it was on point and well done.

Konami would be better off selling the Metal Gear IP at this point. It's still a valuable IP, just not for them.
why should they?Using the Metal Gear IP to push their merchandises and services is already a no brainer, they don’t need to sell the IP
I hope Konami lends the Metal Gear IP to someone who is willing to invest money into a AAA-single player game. One of Sonys studios could be a good fit. I could also see Nintendo funding a game if there is a competent developer free to hire.

DQ11 wasnt an exclusive to the PS4. It was multiplatform with 3DS, so i dont think people expected that Dragon Quest 11 on PS4 alone was going to perform similar to previous games in the serie. It would be similar advantages if MHW also was multiplatform with the Switch or 3DS. DQ11 also sold about 1.5 million on PS4, while FF15 is about 1.1 million (Famitsu numbers).

It has potential but Valkyria Chronicles is not a very big franchise. All entries sold below 200k, and the first one achieved 240k thanks to budget releases.

SH is a small franchise. Full remakes cost money and the franchise is not really popular nowadays. They might bank on nostalgia but I doubt they can reach high sales nonetheless.

off-topic, but to be fair, Kojima takes great pictures most of the time. Worth following even if you don't like MGS.

MGS and Kojima’s ousting is a very unique case and I don’t think any of the first parties would wanna touch it without knowing how the franchise fares without him. In Sony’s case, I’m not sure how it’d affect their relationship to Kojima himself.

They turned Dissidia into Gundam Versus and no one ever asked for that.
It has a 69 metacritic score and the little bit of story they have is locked behind grinding. launching right next to MHW and DBFZ didn't help things either.
I didn't know it had that low a score and didn't know they changed the gameplay up, I thought it was literally dissidia HD

Metal Gear Survive reminds me a bit of Umbrella Corps (Resident Evil spin off), two spin offs that does different things, but are not well recieved or popular. I do think that Metal Gear Survive will be more critical acclaimed than Umbrella Corps though.

EDIT: Umbrella Corps ended up selling about 25k.

Besides MHW for obvious reasons since it's the strongest 3rd Party IP right now on consoles, the games really sold quite bad on PS4 so far this year. FF:Dissidia, DW9, Metal Gear, Secret of Mana etc.
Wait, we already have sales numbers for Secret of Mana? Did I miss it?

25k for metal gear survive? That's a bomb.

What actually happened between Kojima and Konami? Anyone have a good summary article?
We don't have specifics and Kojima said he isn't legally allowed to talk about it.

If i had to guess i would say the long and expensive development cycle for MGS5 led to multiple scoldings of Kojima, and Kojima probably got sick of it and went off on them.

Wait, we already have sales numbers for Secret of Mana? Did I miss it?
We only got a report that it sold about 50% of its first shipment on day one. That is for PS4 and Vita combined.

What were the expectations for this remake anyway? How much did the the Adventure of Mana remake sell?

Peace

Terrible word of mouth from the betas and no advertising of any story mode hooks for FF fans.
It's also a meh game in itself.

If Konami wants easy money, they should hire Bluepoint to do full remakes of Silent Hill 2/3 ala SOTC. Also a MGS collection with 4 and Rising.
"Easy money" and Silent hill in the same sentance seems off to me.

I don't think generalizing them as "PS4 games" is the right way to look at these sales. Each game is a special case.

Dissidia NT is a game no one asked for. It lacks all the strengths of the old Dissidia games and just an unappealing product at the start. DW9 is bashed by critics and gamers alike. It's also a dying franchise. MGS's existence is already an offense to many fans. Secret of Mana remake removes all the charms of the original and what's left is just a very generic low-budget ARPG. Them being on PS4 is not the problem. I believe they perform badly on all the platforms they are on in all the regions they are released.

Was going to post something similar, but yeah: The games just aren't attractive propositions.

It's difficult to make comparisons in order to analyze Seiken Densetsu 2 remake.

The franchise was widely popular in Japan. The first entry on GB sold around 500k in Japan. Seiken Densetsu 2 has sold 1.2-1.5m in Japan and the third one about 700k units. Legend of Mana also sold 700k units. At that point, the franchise went downhill, still retaining some popularity. Sword of Mana on GBA (remake of the first entry) shipped around 300k, and the same numbers were posted by Children of Mana on DS. Seiken Densetsu 4 was quite a bomb with just 340k units. The game wasn't that great either. Heroes of Mana struggled to reach 100k, which is a shame because I think the RTS formula was pretty good.

SQEX kept releasing mobile games but I don't think any of them succeeded in a big way. The Switch collection did ok-ish for what it was (40k for a 3-ROM dump). SQEX hasn't given a focus to the franchise since the GBA entry. The new remake is not polished and while faithful doesn't seem to have really a place in nowadays market. Was it necessary? Production values don't seem very high, which is understable being a remake of a second-tier franchise, but still nothing looks exciting.

You say it as if it can be done easily. The only reason Survival exists is because MGSV's gameplay is great and Konami believe they can make more easy money out of it. How are they going to do a MG2 remake? What engine should they use? Who should design the gameplay? How to "stylize"?
