But if that was truly the case, then how Nintendo is able to keep winning over the Japanese market while also relying on iterative sequels for series like Pokemon and Mario Kart and Smash etc?

It is more complicated than that, though I agree Japanese publishers are playing their cards far too safe these days.
Nintendo is king at managing IPs.

They changed a lot of Zelda conventions with BotW and made the game explode in popularity.

Mario Kart, Splatoon and Smash are MP games at core so iterating isn't an issue, just like it isn't one with Monster Hunter.

Even 3d Marios have different formulas and therefore always feel fresh (sandbox like Odyssey, 3D like Galaxy and 2D/3D like 3D Land/World).

But when you take a franchise like Yakuza, which is Single player, and you get the games at a rapid pace then decline is to be expected.

More generally these are experiences with little competition. Who is making games like Mario Kart, Smash or Mario ?

Just to make sure, you mean RFA will handily outsell any Sony first party franchise in Japan this gen, right? Without that qualifier it looks like you're speaking in general rather than in specifics. Of course with how little Japan matters to Sony's first party titles, that's not saying much.

Of course I'm talking about Japan. Isn't that what we're talking about?

It shows that Sony don't want to or is unable to create games that cater to both markets.

Always assume people are talking about Japan in Media Create threads.

That's not the discussion though?
There is no discussion from what I can tell?

You're just pointing out something that Sony doesn't give two shits about. It would be like me pointing out that the non-Japanese-made software sales are just atrociously bad for the Switch in Japan. That's also something that Nintendo doesn't give two shits about. There's not much discussion there.

The problem is with talking about how little Japanese sales matter to Sony... in a thread that is only about Japanese sales. That is true but this is a Japanese sales thread, not WW sales.

If you argue like that Sony could abandon the Japanese market completely, because they would be totally fine without it.
In terms of consoles sold? They'd still be over 100 million sold around the world. In terms of first party software? Their best selling first party title in Japan is Spider-man which is somewhere around 300k. Last I checked it was 13 million or so globally. So you're talking 2-3% of its total software being sold in Japan.

What Sony needs is the Japanese developers, and they obviously don't have a hold on those developers due to their strength in Japan I'd say. So yes, I'd say Sony is positioned in a way where they would be totally fine without the Japanese market.

Are they tho ?

Feels like Minecraft and FIFA would disagree. Even the late Diablo port had respectable numbers and Cuphead is always charting on the eshop.

I'm sorry, but Minecraft sells on anything. Anywhere. It's not at all indicative of anything as it's its own thing.

Diablo sold like 15k I think? Uh, when you have to go to accepting such a low number to be 'respectable' that kinda goes with what I'm saying. It's not even in the top 100 software titles for the Switch in Japan, per Game Data Library.

Minecraft? Overcooked? It's not like the Japanese market is flooded with western made games for the Switch

BTW, Switch hardware is still very impressive week after week, this year (calendar) is certainly shaping up to be peak Switch in Japan, at least if they managed to ship enough units.

Nintendo is king at managing IPs.

I agree that they handle their franchises expertly and they are used to make them fresh, but even when third parties tried that like Resident Evil series which re-invented itself many times over the years (RE4 - RE7 - RE2 Remake) things didn't change much for it in Japan even though they gathered excitement in other parts of the world.

Content is problem but not the main issue in my humble opinion, consumers habits/preferences changed in Japan.

I mean..Ring Fit Adventure is a fitness RPG that will handily outsell any Sony first party franchise this gen.

I didn't say they don't create new things, they experiment with new ideas all the time, much more than people give them credit for, but they are also very reliant on their well known ips and characters.

It is indicative that the software sales are not atrociously bad, especially since the Switch SKU is going to be the best-selling one.

Diablo opened at 10k, your 15k number is not up to date. The Skyrim remaster was at 44k at the end of 2018 too.

Like I said, several indies are doing great on the eshop. I also mentionned FIFA which sold in the same ballpark as the Ps4 version.

Nobody would blame you if you were to correct your claim you know. We all say inaccurate things in these threads.

I mean, if you can source more up to date numbers, go for it.

I have no need to correct my claim.

Per GDL there are 4 non-Japanese titles in the top 100 for the Switch: Minecraft, FIFA 18, FIFA 19 and Skyrim.

Per GDL there are 19 non-Japanese titles in the top 100 for the PS4

If you have physical and/or digital sales numbers for other western software on the Switch in Japan, I'd be happy to take it into consideration.

I'll reiterate. Nintendo itself doesn't give two shits about western developed software sales. They have positioned themselves for their own software, not the software of other developers. If they simply were to make a system with parity to that of whatever Microsoft and Sony has out then they would easily get the big third party titles. But they don't care. It's not their plan. And that's fine. It clearly works great for them, so more power to them. I understand this, so I'm not going to bring it up every week ad nauseum, because I understand their gameplan and there's not much to discuss.

Minecraft on Switch is going to sell 7-8 times the number of units sold on PS4 when all is said and done.
I mean, if you can source more up to date numbers, go for it.

I have no need to correct my claim.

Per GDL there are 2 non-Japanese titles in the top 100 for the Switch: Minecraft and Skyrim.

Without including the Call of Duty franchise, Per GDL there are 6 non-Japanese titles in the top 50 for the PS4: Grand Theft Auto V, Minecraft, Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six: Siege, Battlefield 1, Red Dead Redemption II, and Fallout 4

If you have sales and/or numbers for other western software on the Switch in Japan, I'd be happy to take it into consideration.
No

You forgot Fifa 18 and Fifa 19. Both outsold Skyrim

I'd be lying if I said I didn't expect GBFV to be a bit higher considering the talk about how much more centered its appeal is in Japan. Without the digital to work off of my original believe that Asia ended up taking a higher share than expected was pretty much in range.

Gotta get those bars.

No idea how popular GranBlue still is in Japan. So what I will say is that for a fighting game coming pout of Japan these numbers look pretty good to me. Will be curious about legs and dlc sales. Especially the latter since I've seen tons of talk for multiple seasons of dlc

Also hot fuck at that ps4 number

That PS4 lead over PS3 is evaporating fast. Switch gaining on 3DS but I doubt it ever really catches up.

This year will be the test. If Nintendo gets creative and look for the next Splatoon or Mario Maker who knows how long they can keep things going. Ring Fit is a great step down that path.

DQXI keeps on giving. It should achieve 500k at retail by the end of the quarter. The lack of other big jRPGs is doing favours.

Yep, but that doesn't really matter at the
end. We can't say PS4 was more successful than PS3 in the grand scheme of things while Switch is generating much more revenues than 3DS in Japan.

Nintendo coming in and give Platinum and Team Ninja two quick million-sellers is an example of how they can get a reliable stable of third party developers without having to rely plans they have no control over. When it comes to looking for teams for their own projects and acting as a publisher Nintendo is busy saving the Japanese games industry.

DQXI legs compared:

3DS: 1.148.888/1.793.435 (1.56x, 17 months)

PS4: 950.315/1.384.328 (1.46x, 17 months)

Switch: 303.204/485.392 (1.60x, 4.5 months)

Claim amended for Diablo, we'll know its total sales when we get the top 1000. I must've thought of Skyrim.

The evidence you exhibit would be telling if you said something like "the Switch is getting way less Western games". If you are talking about software sales, you should add the total. It is clear with Minecraft being a million-seller on Switch than they are not atrociously bad, especially since the system is 3 years younger than the PS4.

Once again, I disgree with the claim that Nintendo doesn't care about Western support, especially for the Switch. Going back to the reveal trailer, you have 2K18 and Skyrim being prominently featured. Overwatch opened the last Direct. Even looking at the games that got a Switch bundle, Western games are very prominently features (Fortnite, Minecraft and Diablo).

They don't rely on it, but there is no denying that they actively pushed for it for the Switch (and that's without even mentionning indies).

I wonder if Square Enix is thinking about a planned timed exclusive for 12. Launch on Switch then a definitive edition for the PS5. Or are they looking for that breakout Monster Hunter moment and go full high-end.

They already tried to have their MHW moment in the west with DQ11 (and at least Pc got the release the same time as PS4, instead of having to wait months).

If they have any business sense they will go for a Simultaneous Worldwide Multiplat release for DQ12.

But that wont happen on multiple levels.
First there wont be a worldwide release, because japan will get it first.
Second they probably will continue to chase that MHW dream and try to go for PS5 as the Main platform.
Which will end well with the tiny installbase PS5 will have in DQs main market(japan), and most likely wont make up for it in Western sales.
Then they are gonna make a late port to Switch, and be dissapointed by the lower sales a late port always gets.

Famitsu Sales: Week 6, 2019 (Feb 04 - Feb 10)
21./00. [3DS] Pokemon Ultra Sun / Ultra Moon # <RPG> (Pokemon Co.) {2017.11.17} (¥4.980) - 2.162 / 2.452.945 <80-100%> (+3%)

I was mostly thinking about that Pokémon Go is on the the same system as sword/shield.

However I guess the answer is in the quotes below.
Not really.

Pokémon is super-popular, the threshold to enter rankings is low and Let's Go is different enough from Sword/Shield to have its own market.
No, the more Sword/Shield keep selling, the more Go will too.

People expecting Square to skip Switch for Dragon Quest XII are either not paying attention or being irrational.

Could it happen ? Of course, strangers things have. Is it the likely outcome ? Absolutely not given both franchise history and Square's Switch strategy.
