I love your charts. Keep doing the great job!
I'd like to see Smash Bros sales compared to previous releases, and I think it would be nice to see Switch numbers approaching PS4 numbers in the following weeks. I'm pretty sure we would see interesting tendencies there as well ;)

At least it's getting closer to selling it's first shipment without heavy discounts unlike FFXV.
The price of Kingdom Hearts 3 is already dropping at some places. For example:

https://www.suruga-ya.jp/product/detail/107002054000 (down 37% from retail)

But yeah, nothing as extreme as FFXV yet.

Media Create
01./00. [PS4] Kingdom Hearts III # <RPG> (Square Enix) {2019.01.25} (¥8.800) - 610.077 / NEW <79,32%>

Shipment : 769.133

Only 14k left, no problem there, probably received a second shipment even.

Famitsu
01./00. [PS4] Kingdom Hearts III # <RPG> (Square Enix) {2019.01.25} (¥8.800) - 640.406 / NEW <60-80%>
01./01. [PS4] Kingdom Hearts III # <RPG> (Square Enix) {2019.01.25} (¥8.800) - 81.795 / 722.201 <80-100%> (-87%)

Shipment: 800.507<x<902.751
Somewhere between 35-135k left, probably closer to the former than the latter

Switch crushing it this year in Japan. And the Japanese lineup for the rest of the year is insane. Mario Maker in June will do a lot for the system's YOY comparisons.

Japan gaming market have been missing on many PS quality release since years lol. I don't think they even know whats released on PS4 anymore nowadays.

Thats the consequences of Sony putting their eggs all on the west first over Japan. I don't think Sony will also miss Japan though. They are undisputed king of gaming ecos atm. Thats a trade any big console maker company would want to make lol.
Ah yes, definitely. Would like to know if other asian countries have similar consumption habits to the Japanese too, since Sony sees so much more success on the rest of the world.

Not gonna shed a single tear over Catherine bombing on Vita, and well everywhere else because of Atlus' perplexing decision not to release it on Switch. Fuck that game and fuck the bigot behind it.

Yes we all knew Catherine on Vita was a complete waste of time.

As bad as Persona Q2 only on 3DS. A complete waste of resources when they could've sold more on other platforms

Persona Q2 at least had the excuse of using an engine and gameplay design that was only suited for 3DS.

Catherine was a PS3 game so a Vita port would have required quite a bit of additional work.

The Stussining
Jump Force came out with a better opening then I thought it would (my guess was around 50k). Interested in seeing if it has any legs at all. Though I wouldn't bet on it. And damn Chris wasn't kidding in the last thread when he said the Vita version of Cathrine was a flop.

Second week Famitsu posts top 10 and mentions it's top 5. Some time they'll find the error.

Huh? This isn't a late port. Even the original wasn't one. I think you meant "re-release" or something ;)

Ahh yes lol. I wanted to say rerelease there. Not sure why late port pop out on my head first.O_O

I don't think other asian countries had the same habits to japan at all. The gaming DNA for rest of Asia is absolutely different vs Japan. More focus on PC more than gaming consoles like japan.

Sony is bigger than Nintendo in the rest of Asia.
Having said that, both are nothing compared to PC and mobile.
MMORPG and F2P with microtransactions has been a thing here since early 2000.

Force of habit, maybe ;)

But honestly, doubt KT is really worried. Series itself is very niche, and with how pricey the games are...

Haha indeed.^_^ I am also so confused on KT there regarding why it won't localize Nobunaga no Yabou for Switch here. Considering that they already localize it on PC or PS4, why just ignore Switch here.T_T

Great YoY growth for Switch and huge YoY decline for PS4 despite PS4 had 5 new releases.
Very impresive Switch numbers.

Thanks :) I guess if Vita recieves a similar bump, it should be able to cross 6 million.

With no new software switch went up? Weird.
Vita and PS4 barely budged.
Vita sales for Catherine can't have been worth the port, right? Still no clue why Atlus wanted a PS3 downport on vita in 2019
Do we have any indication how much work that went into the port? I mean if its something out of the ordinary in terms of PS3/Vita releases. Theres many PS3/Vita multiplatform games, so maybe the porting didnt require THAT much work? Theres other games that sell less than 10k, but keeps on getting released (like visual novels), so maybe it could be worth it.

Would have been nice to see a Switch version as well though i think, just to see the sales potential.

Yeah I think Switch is gonna start to recover the gap on the 3DS this year.

While Switch sales are great and improvement from last year I don't think people always remember that 3DS still had massive sales in 2013.

First 7 weeks of the year (MC).

NSW 2019:

199.982
78.056
71.139
52.429
69.472
61.280
65.958

Total = 598.316

3DS 2013:

279.259
92.661
81.855
75.124
77.682
127.695 (DQ VII Remake)
97.971

Total = 832.247

Switch performance is pretty crazy considering it "only" had NSMB---point is, NSMB has been much more impactful than expected. The game is approaching 500k units really fast. Also, evergreens and Smash are pushing hardware sales.

That's kinda why I said if you were to graph out number of third party releases that chart each month, and compare it over the past few years... maybe someone makes that sort of chart already? I suppose you could also just compare the number of releases for the systems each month/year, but I feel like if you just look at the ones that are actually charting, perhaps it's a bit more honest of a number than simply all releases? And seeing each month's numbers over the course of a few years - you should see trends of systems getting more and less support?

I don't know, the whole reason I was thinking about it perhaps was because this is a single week, and there's a lot of new PS4 releases, and very few Switch ones, but I (probably incorrectly) feel, that's actually not too far off the norm?

Switch will always have a lower amount of third party releases than PS platforms, period. It's caching up with respect to Wii U and closing the gap with respect to 3DS but it won't be able to overcome Nintendo historical difficulties in attracting third parties. And we should not even expect that---Switch has first party games which desirability is way above first party games on Sony platforms. Switch, to be successful, doesn't need to have as many third party games as a Sony platform.

I remember. Those were interesting times. Post price cut the 3DS sold extremely well up until it's later years.

I didn't do particularly well either. It's notable quite poor even in comparison to Atlus late gen ports.

Wow great Switch sales! I honestly thought it would do 50-55k but 65k and it did more than last week? Whoa indeed! Best thing of all is that it's selling at a way higher price than 3DS and Vita ever did!

I think it did great even during its later years. it just started to hit saturation point because of massive early sales. DS and GB are kinda anomalies. DS as it it had appeal to demographics that were not traditionally audience for consoles (those are on mobile nowadays) and GB was sold for well over a decade (15 years!).

Pretty sure it's still available, but given Pokémon sales are down this week, they're not the main driving force.

Good point. Looking back, Pokémon sales are only ~6k higher than they were in week 4 (last week before the bundle returned, I think), so the bundle can't be the only thing. Impressive hardware sales then.

Switch selling with no new games....

Seems like money left on the table. Nintendo again has a wide open first half of the year and publishers don't take advantage of it

The vast majority of Switch/PS3 games were developed with Vita in mind. Catherine is a port of a game that was definitely developed with PS3/360 level hardware in mind.

Switch's first half is kind of shockingly bad from Nintendo.
NSMBU and Yoshi were rumored/reported to be 2018 games but likely delayed to fill gaps, but like 3 2D platformers, all being Mario/spin offs seems like poor planning.

Compared to how stacked the second half with on average more than one game per month, I don't get how they could mess it up so much.

But at least there's some better spring 3rd party titles that might do well

Week 8, 2018

NSW - 39.696
PS4 - 34.775

MHW effect wares off and starting from week 9 comparisons will be much better for PS4 YOY. The problem is there is almost nothing notable releasing for the rest of the year after March and hardware will likely drop to low 10ks if Sony hasn't programmed a price drop before fall.

Catherine FW numbers are around ~40% the original release, it's not very good but it's not bad either, somewhere in the middle probably on the lower end of their expectations as Full Body is not a straight port but not a full remake either
Something like 100k LTD (Japan only, digital included) should be alright for them.
