I understand and respect this and I really hope everything will be OK. Preventive measures are extremely important to contain the spread. That said, panic and alarmism aren't helpful at all. Staring at the wall of the kitchen for 5 straight weeks won't help fighting the coronavirus more than studying, reading, watching TV or playing games. It's important to give this crisis the relevance that it deserves, certainly not less, but also not more (that would be another irresponsability), and so far the disease is not much deadlier than the regular flu. Obviously if paychecks get delayed, many families will be worried about their economy and prioritise resources more than ever, but in other cases normality is advised (within the more restricted margins of a pseudo-quarantine).

Sorry if I got too personal, I just think it's important to tone down the alarmism a bit. Please don't be offended. Sending all of you in the most affected areas good wishes for the next few weeks! :)

No, its ok. I realize I am not thinking totally rational. Still in shock I think. I'm kinda worried about my job stability right now. I work in education. But yeah most people will likely be fine. And to everyone who said it, yeah games will probably sell pretty well too. There is not much else to do all day. I am definitely projecting my own situation more than I should and I am sorry for bringing it into the sales thread.

Don't worry.

Italy, for example, is facing an economic crisis because of the virus. In the most productive regions (Piemonte, Lombardia, Emilia-Romagna), schools have been closed as well as cinemas and theaters; all events and fairs have been cancelled. 90% of bookings from abroad has been cancelled too. This is creating a lot of economic and job losses.

Personally I think the whole situation is very exaggerated but from the moment you limit outdoor activities and remain in house video gaming benefits from this.

I think the uncertainty of how it spreads and just uncertainty in general is enough to have people on edge. It may very well affect those big releases because people would want to avoid crowds. Digital would probably explode.

I don't post in here very often, but I felt compelled to say I don't think your thinking is irrational at all.

I live in mainland China and I've been here since the start of the situation - throughout all the shutdowns, lockdowns, quarantines, etc. I don't think it gives me any particular insight on what people's behavior patters will be anywhere else... But I agree that I don't see that it necessarily follows from a shutdown situation that people will spend more money on video games, or even have the money to spend on video games.

A viral epidemic is such an unfamiliar situation; I don't see how people can treat it like some kind of common data point... And I think many people don't quite realize the economic toil it's taking at the most affected places. Maybe people will purchase loads of games as a consequence, I don't know. I don't see it as some clear and distinct truth, anyway.

Solidarity to you, Vinnk!

If we use the Chinese example as a reference point (since it got hit earlier than Japan), the virus pushed people to consume games :

- Ring Fit was hit by shortages and resell price was 3 times the original value
- increase in game time and spend but negative impact on hardware sales :

Man Ring Fit Adventure sales could have exploded in this difficult times but too bad that there are still major shortages which won't be resolved any time soon. Especially now where a lot of factories are still not operating.

How Platinum Games' Project G.G. Builds Off of Viewtiful Joe, Wonderful 101 - IGN

PlatinumGames offered IGN some insight into Project G.G.'s scope, release plans, and more.

Not much else is known about Project G.G. other than how Platinum is aiming to launch on every current console. "Basically we'd like to hit PS4, Xbox One, Switch and Steam, and then of course PS5 and Series X are coming soon. We don't know exactly when this will come out, but we'd like to release it on whatever are the main platforms at that time," Platinum Chief Creative Officer Atsushi Inaba said.

Do you have any insight into how the manufacturing is going for Nintendo's Chinese made products? Tim Cook of Apple came out on Friday and seemed extremely positive on the supply chain. This yesterday afternoon US time from Bloomberg. His exact words, "

"We're talking about adjusting some knobs, not some sort of wholesale, fundamental change"

www.bloomberg.com

Apple’s Tim Cook Sees Minor Supply Chain Changes in Wake of Virus

Apple Inc. Chief Executive Officer Tim Cook suggested the iPhone maker wouldn’t make any quick moves out of China in light of interruptions due to the coronavirus and called the situation a “temporary condition.”

If Apple seems to be OK from a manufacturing perspective, how is Nintendo doing? They should be in a similar boat I would imagine.

I didnt realize that Project G.G is Platinum's first owned IP. Never really thought much about that subject though, but still. It would also be impressive if they managed to get the game out for all 5 systems at the same time.

I doubt Project GG will be another Steep situation. It won't be a huge production, it shouldn't have much trouble being adapted for Switch since Platinum's in-house tools are pretty scaleable. Platinum has stated their intent to put Project GG on Switch and they will get it done.

It was selling too well. We wouldn't want Konami to feel pressured with the Switch remake potentially outselling the main PS4 entry :p

Sports games are removed from digital stores after a specific period due to licensing. Bamco did the same thing.

Video 1/5 where he talks about cutting his teeth in arcade, his bad boy image, playing games online because he was single, the inspiration behind Tekken's story and personal life.

I watched it to see if there was any clues as to why Bamco tends to skip Nintendo products. I mean at the risk of becoming an armchair psychologist... He's stubborn, loyal and competitive.

He's probably more inclined to stick with PlayStation through thick and thin, and knowing international sales will always get him out of a financial pinch after spending money pushing graphics makes that decision easier.

Thanks so much! It's really interesting to watch some of the titles bubbling under the radar, like YW4++, Kirby, MonHun, Link's Awakening, etc.

Expectations for Animal Crossing are that sales will shift to eShop even more than 30-40%. We could see digital exceeding physical.

New Sony campaign at Amazon from 29 February to 22 March.

5500 yen off for purchasing PS4, 7000 yen off for purchasing PS4 and Sony Bravia, 10000 yen off for purchasing PS4, Sony Bravia and Final Fantasy 7.

s.famitsu.com

I've been expecting Sony to shift their PS4 hardware offerings around late March/April for a while now, and this only makes me more confident.

I think the fact that Sony hasn't announced a special FFVII edition PS4 yet is...notable. Almost like it's a new super slim model and they don't want to reveal it too early!

That's about as logical as saying the switches success is due to a lack of competition. Nintendo deserve credit for their hard work in making their first ever hybrid just as Sony deserved credit for making a machine in 2013 that was attractive to third parties and doing deals with some of them to ensure full support.

I was mocked earlier when I said this virus will increase digital sales. It's a no brainer if people are staying at home and can't buy physical they'll be more likely to buy a digital copy. So while physical sales could decrease, digital should counter it somewhat.
the ps4 was alive and kicking when the switch released both domestically and overseas while the ps4 only faced a dying 3ds on it's way out which wasn't really relevant in the west in the first place, so no the same cant be said for the switch

Nintendo had to work hard because they didn't have third party support while ps4 pretty much recieved it by default due to lack of competition and third parties inability to adapt when the switch showed signs of success early on

The 3ds was selling more annually when the ps4 launched then the ps4 was selling when the switch launched. The Wii U was the market leader well ahead of the ps4 in total sales so there was that too.

Not to mention the ps4 price was still high when the switch launched. Hell it's still super high in 2020. Meanwhile 3ds was super cheap.

3ds is a handheld, it selling more goes without saying, doesn't change the fact that it was still on it's way out, wii u was dead at that point, how much its sold in total is irrelevant when it had no software support of significance by that point

the most significant factor is that ps4 had software support on a worldwide basis and that's where japanese devs followed, 3ds nor switch had such support while they were out, switch only gained support after its success while the ps4's support was prepared before it was even released, that is why nintendo had to work harder compared to sony

3ds selling more because it was a super cheap handheld but it was still selling more. Back in the day there were those who doubted the ps4 would even outsell the Wii U limited.

Switch has launched with both the benefits of being a handheld and home console. It's biggest competition is the ps4 which never did the numbers a portable Nintendo device would struggle to compete with.

Let's not forget the second half of the ps4 gen in japan it has to compete with the switch too. In terms of rival machines it's ridiculous to suggest the switch has stiffer competition.

The real question is at how worse position PS5 will be comparing to PS4.

How could a traditional home console in this era be in a better position then a Nintendo portable?

I understand pre switch announcement not everybody was convinced it would be the true successor to both their handheld and portable range with the full weight of a unified Nintendo support behind it.

But now we do know that and there's no way that doesn't look more promising on the Japanese Market then a traditional home console from Sony.

PS4 launching 5 months after the west and missing the holiday window hurt PS4 big time. It's not a mistake they will make again and now that Sony is in the publishing business for big western games they could have a decent line up. With FF, Souls, RE and now MH being de facto exclusives plus BC things might actually be better out of the gate as it adds more value.

It'll be no different than the PS4 launching in 2014 when 3DS was on the charts running amuck.

I would argue it may be in a slightly better position than PS4 if another KH is hinted at and DQ stays multiplatform.

From third parties there will be zero gain for PS5 comparing to what PS4 got, unless SE decides to make Dragon Quest Sony exclusive.

The Netherlands
Pro Baseball Famista Evolution released at 2 August 2018 and removed from eShop at 28 February 2019.
Jikkyou Powerful Pro Baseball released at 27 June 2019 and removed from eShop at 29 February 2020.
Interesting how both games become unavailable on the last day of February. Is there a reason why February instead of the end of March or April?
Also, I was wondering - about license expirations in general - if this means that Konami is not allowed to produce new physical copies of the game as well?

The season starts in late March or early April, and ends in October. With physical it's probably the same.
