Could someone sum up to rollout for the n3DS (price and timeline) in Japan ?

Since they got the revision first and during the Fall, it might be the closest comparison point we'll have for the potential revision.

Do you remember how the standard model was priced back then and how it was phased out (quickly ? Through a price cut/bundle or naturally?).

The LL had pretty much replaced the original 3DS long before the n3DS came out, and made up like 80+% of the sales, and it(the LL) was officially discontinued at the end of 2015. It's retail price was 19,800¥(tax included) and remained that way, because when Nintendo launched the new series, they raised the prices to 20,304¥(tax included).

That MSRP increase is basically just taking the tax increase from April 2014 into consideration.

19800/1,05 = 18857
20304/1,08 = 18800
Completely forgot that was in April, Abe tried to raise our consumption taxes so many times I lost track.

Edit: Oh and I reversed some numbers by accident, it should be 18,900¥. Sorry, it's late.

People can't look past their own personal dislike of chibi designs and had somehow justified it as a product of low budgets and underpowered hardware, and not an intentional choice. That's why you see people decry the fact that the in-game graphics don't "reflect" the concept art despite the fact that the artbooks make it clear the characters were designed as chibi and the vast majority of art for the series is chibi.
This problem is super bad on here especially, add it ontop of people thinking everyone holds their specific view and somehow it becomes the main talking point for no reason

In that case:

18900/1,05 = 18000
20304/1,08 = 18800

800 yen increase excl VAT.
Yeah, that seems about right, it was a very minor increase, but on top of the increase that the LL brought to make up for the price cut of the original 3DS.
Isn't the increase still real (just well hid) ?

The n3DS was a bit more expensive than the 3DS LL but still a decent amount more expensive than the 3DS.

Basically n3DS LL > n3DS >= 3DS LL > 3DS

I don't know why the designs in Bravely 2 get so much hate. They're fine. If chibis were such a massive turn off across the board, wouldn't FFIX have sold like crap back in the day?

3DS launched at 25000 yen. After the emergency price drop, price differentiations of every revision were small and below the original one.

I don't know what other people are saying, but personally I find it to be a bit uncanny valley where the greater fidelity over the 3DS designs makes the characters look kind of llke plastic dolls, which is a little off putting compared to the simpler designs on 3DS. That being said, it's not a big deal. The game looks terrific overall, especially the costume designs and the set designs (as you'd expect from the series).

Yup, this is where I'm at. The character designs have this weird frankenstein mix of chibi stylized and high fidelity that is extremely unsettling at times. It's something I managed to get over fairly quickly but I certainly don't doubt it's putting some people off from getting them game.

Not that I think that's a huge number of people.

All hints for Bravely Default II show that it will have a good second week (and comparing to opening and genre not very good for Story of Seasons).

I love the look of the game but as graphics tech improves people have different expectations of the graphics too. Chibi looks weird when the hardware is capable enough to handle more realistic graphics. In Bravely it is by design though. The picture book art style works well and the characters fit the art style. It really is a artistic game at that but many gamers can't look past that or outright don't like it.

With the huge budget increase I do hope this next Tales game sells more than 2 million.

All hints for Bravely Default II show that it will have a good second week (and comparing to opening and genre not very good for Story of Seasons).

How Marvelous miss this badly is unfortunate. Really hope they fix the issues before the negative wom isn't too detrimental to the games legs.

I mean FFIX is the worst selling post FFVII mainline FF game (globally). Of course you can debate that did art style have anything to do with it. it was late gen PS1 release after all.

2 million sounds like a big ask, even multiplatform as it is with a decent amount of pent up demand for a "true next generation" Tales game. Namco does seem willing though to aggressively drop prices and keep selling on the back end.

Outside of combats/cutscenes FF VII was chibi everywhere so I'm not sure Chibi could be pointed as a reason for the drop. FF VIII had no chibi characters and sold less overall than FF VII too. The decline continued with FFX->XII and no chibification too.

I think the Chibi complaint is akin to the "manga eyes" complain about Alita. Just people projecting their own tastes onto something to justify "poor performance" while convienently ignoring other examples disproving their thoery

No, there were serious complaints back in the day about FF IX backtracking from VIII visually and tonally. Also remember that IX, X, and XI were all announced right next to each other and that IX started as a side game before getting a numbered slot.

And people complained add nauseum that Diablo 2 was "too colorful" or that Diablo 3 "Looked like WoW". People complaining doesn'T mean it actually impacted sales. FF IX suffered more from FF fatigue in the west (too many games in quick succession) than "Ewww this looks kiddy AF"

The PAL charts thread was just updated and Bravely Default 2 actually hit the Top 10 in New Zealand - and that's one of the few markets you don't see Switch evergreens in the Top 10 week in, week out.
I just wanted to say that I appreciate this post by you I had no idea that it appeared in the top 10 over in New Zealand last week. That is a awesome thing.

I didn't really like the new Tales trailer, I know it was more of a teaser, but the voices didn't really match the tone of the conversations that were taking place.

Do we have evidence of Vtubers being trendsetters rather than trailing already successful games? Like I'm not arguing their ability to get more people to buy the games, I'm just wondering if people who say "Vtubers played it so of course it sold more than expected" are just making assumptions because they could be playing those games simply because there's already a lot of buzz surrounding them.

How well did Fire Emblem Three Houses perform in comparison to previous entries? For some reason I thought the game was slightly more popular (didn't expect it to be below ARMS for example), but it might be the digital gap/vouchers in play here.

I mean if Xenoblade can sell 2 million on a single platform I feel like Tales needs to at least sell 2 million when it's on multiple platforms.

You don't go increasing the budget of a game and expect it to sell barely over a million. I wouldn't be surprised if this tales game will be the biggest one in terms of budget. Namco will surely be disappointed if the game doesn't sell 2 million.

There is a BIG gap between Zelda and Mario Maker 2, wonder why there is like no 1.5 million sellers.

Best Selling FE since Mystery of the Emblem back in the Famicom I think, counting digital of course.

And yeah the BD2 is mostly people trying to confirm their biases, somehow people don't remember that software was really big on the 3ds, Switch biggest games hit bigger, but 3ds had a lot more mid tier stuff doing 500k.

Last shipment update for the game was March 2020, and it was at 580,000 with digital. It probably passed Fates and Awakening with digital already.

People have high expectations for Jrpgs in general. There is a limit to their overall reach.

Selling over a million is a great milestone for AA Jrpgs in general. Selling over a million would be great for Bravely and I also believe Square's expectations aren't ridiculous unlike for their AAA games.
I think this is because in the 90s and early 2000s JRPGS were what we processed as the equivalent of triple A games now.
they were usually some of the best looking graphically, relied heavily on their stories and therefore had lots of cutscenes and usually more voiceacting than your standard game at the time. They also invested heavily in CGI cutscenes and openings.
It all made it seem like the genre was bigger than it is. And now game development makes it hard to do even that

Anyone with the last Famitsu numbers prior for each out of chart game? Sadly my list is very outdated (kept trying to update but just stopped each time lol)?

There is a BIG gap between Zelda and Mario Maker 2, wonder why there is like no 1.5 million sellers.
I was about to say, it's kinda weird there's this 1700/1800k plateau and then a massive jump down to 1M

Also

18. [NSW] Taiko no Tatsujin: Drum 'n' Fun! <ACT> (Bandai Namco Entertainment) {2018.07.19} (¥6.100) - 572.215
19. [NSW] Fishing Spirits: Nintendo Switch Version # <SPT> (Bandai Namco Entertainment) {2019.07.25} (¥5.700) - 566.909

massive RoI for these games...

The last time Fire Emblem Three Houses charted in the weekly chart, was in week 7 2020:

Famitsu Sales: Week 7, 2020 (Feb 10 - Feb 16)

26./22. [NSW] Fire Emblem: Three Houses # <SLG> (Nintendo) {2019.07.26} (¥6.980) - 1.826 / 289.042 <80-100%> (+0%)

Nintendo had 580k units shipped in Japan until march 2020. Page 19:

One year later the game sold at retail:

[NSW] Fire Emblem: Three Houses # <SLG> (Nintendo) {2019.07.26} (¥6.980) - 323.562

The game is over 600k now, without considering extra digital sales.

I just remembered when NSO was going to kill the legs of online games on Switch. Good times.
