Mario Tennis looks surprisingly good and deep. I hink that will be a surprise hit and the best selling version of the series. We can also get a hint of how motion controls will affect sales. If it sells well I can see a return of Wii Sports like games.

Absolutely. Kimishima pointed out to the inportance of the handheld market and it serving its own purpose (kid friendly). Thats a big hint that Nintendo is thinking about that stuff. Nintendo publishes around 25 games a year. I think thats overkill for one platform especially if you want to build up healthy relations with third parties.

Mario tennis will be big but it won't be a surpise

Going the paid DLC route on Splatoon 2 seems like a pretty economical decision for Nintendo. Given that the game is already evergreen, this is going to give it a bump and extend its life for years. And $20 for such a meaty expansion is going to have a very high attach rate.

People still think the 3DS will get a successor that isn't just a Switch Mini?

Anyway, it's clear that Nintendo originally intended to bring all relevant Wii U games on Switch. Some of them became porting/deluxe editions, like Pokkén, Mario Kart, Donkey Kong. Some others, like Splatoon, Smash, Mario Tennis, became full-fledged sequels. I think Super Mario Maker will join the club of the latter---this is in line with rumors that wanted the game to be a porting, but Nintendo probably wanted to rework it in an actual sequel.

I think i agree with almost all of those.
I think captain todd will do 100k pretty easy, and do more. But then again maybe the 3ds version will eat a little.

I don't see octopath having a chance to bomb imo. I forgot what I first predicted but I think 200-250k might do

Somewhere. I think.
Fucking hell, why do we never get these games in the west?!

Well, at least they're all on region-free consoles, and it's not like you need deep Japanese language knowledge to be able to play them. And yeah, as someone already said, I assume licencing is one of the reason series is basically a no-show outside Japan.

It did stick out to me that they called the Octo Expansion the "first paid downloadable content for Splatoon 2".

Maybe they've re-evaluated the idea of dropping support after a year.

As I mentioned back when the Famitsu interview came out with that "1 year updates" bit came out, I really don't think that statement was meant to be taken at face value. It was probably them playing it safe and avoiding making promises they may not be able to keep.

Regarding the Octo Expansion, I think it was planned from the beginning (though maybe the scope may have changed). The fact that Cap'n Cuttlefish was nowhere to be seen in the regular campaign, and stuff like playable Octoling was also nowhere to be seen despite data found in the very first Splatoon, shows they must have been planning it from the beginning (making me double wrong, I guess, ha ha).

And yeah, since this is apparently just the first paid DLC, it looks like we can expect free DLC to keep going for much longer than expected

I remember suggesting that Splatoon 2 could get paid DLC in the form of more SP campaign, because that's what you could sell instead of just giving free MP updates, and then proceed to bundle it for a re-release at retail instead of doing a sequel. And I remember being told here that SP isn't important to Splatoon and that Nintendo probably wouldn't do that! I feel sorta vindicated now!

Ha ha, I remember that little discussion :P How wrong I was!

To be honest, never expect the expansion to be nearly as meaty as what we're getting. It seems to be as big as the base campaign, and not re-using levels or anything. Though with this, we've got a clear confirmation Splatoon 3 isn't going to happen on Switch.

With Splatoon 2, they could go for annual paid DLC expansions and keep free updates going all year round inbetween, like other (western) shooters have been doing for a long time now. And that way, they don't need a Splatoon 3 until the next platform yeah.

I can't see the Octolings being intended to be playable in Splatoon 1. They were missing components that we see here. If anything, the octolings were just reskinned inklings

I wonder how this DLC pack is gonna do in Japan, a country not big on digital. By locking a key selling point behind a pay wall, they might stand to get a large portion of players to buy in.

Undertale 27k RT
Splatoon 2 13k+15k+19k
Smash Bros 80k+53k RT (!)
Splatoon Amiibo 15k

I didn't say that there were intended to be playable (the "planned from the beginning" in my post refers to the SP DLC for Splatoon 2, not 1), just that there was data pointing towards that in the original game. Most likely the dev team had planned to do something with them at one point, but those plans were scrapped when Nintendo decided to focus on Splatoon 2, to have it available during the Switch launch year. The whole "playable Octoling" was then most likely moved to Splatoon 2, but I guess they decided to do something more with them than what the data in Splatoon 1 seemed to suggest.

I mean, their absence in Splatoon 2 was really strange, especially with Marina being one (they're supposed to be enemies of the Inklings, so why is there one as an idol? This was never explained at all). So that they kept that stuff for DLC makes sense imo.

That's just my two cents though, and I was wrong about the SP DLC, so I wouldn't hold it against you if you didn't share the same opinion here :P

This seems like the sort of post more suited for 2010 than 2018. Japan has been increasingly in on digital for a few years now and there isn't much evidence that they are digital shy. You can buy digital codes and season passes directly from Amazon Japan like you would any physical product, and Monster Hunter World probably has like 500k in digital sales by now.

Honestly, I really don't know what to expect for this game. Not expecting major sales or anything, but who knows. Guess we'll have a better idea closer to launch.

***

Regarding Hyrule Warriors: Definitive Edition, it's releasing on May 18th in the west... guess they want to keep April "free" for Nintendo Labo.

Splatoon DLC will do just fine.

Taiko Switch coming summer has me wondering if we'll still see 2 releases annually with Switch taking the summer (handheld console) slot and PS4 taking the holiday (tv console) slot?

Also all these predictions leaving out Captain Toad 3DS. :(

I don't know why they'd bother with a PS4 version, honestly.

And at least initially Switch version seems be being pushed as a home version- nothing about portable play in the materials from yesterday.

Right, Taiko PS4 did bad even compared to Wii U but I'm half expecting them to try again.

Speaking of casual/family PS4 undersellers, I wonder when SE is going to do Itadaki Street Switch? And will they do DQ & Mario again?

I really don't see DKTF doing well, I think it will suffer from its pricing and lack of new features just like Bayo 2. I feel Nintendo really messed up the pricing for those compared to their previous (and even upcoming) Wii U ports.

I really don't see DKTF doing well, I think it will suffer from its pricing and lack of new features just like Bayo 2. I feel Nintendo really messed up the pricing for those compared to their previous (and even upcoming) Wii U ports.

I agree and I don't understand why they are going for a full price release of Wii U ports. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe worked because it's Mario Kart and it will sell regardless. But it won't work with titles that aren't multimillion sellers like Bayonetta 2 and Donkey Kong TF. It's a wasted opportunity imo and it makes me sad because they are fantastic titles that deserve more.

Because it's a property that historically sold much better than it did on PS4. Just like Taiko.

I thought you had some projection from SE, but it seems that it was only your personal opinion. Mine is different though. The last Itadaki game was released on Wii, 7 years ago and sold 210k. Wii was more popular than what PS4 is now and the fanbase matched with the demographic of the system so no surprise here. The last Itadaki game that released on Playstation hardware though was... 12 years ago on PSP and sold 110k (150k with the best rerelease). Itadaki on PS4/PSV is at 100k currently.

That's basically the same as the last release of the franchise on Playstation hardware (110k vs 100k). Let's see what the final LTD will be and if it will get a rerelease to see if it can actually outsell Itadaki on PSP. With that said, Itadaki (again in my opinion) doesn't seem like an underseller but it sold around the ''expected'', with expected being a number around the last release on Playstation, since there wasn't any reason that it could/should sell actually a lot higher than that (franchise was absent for 12 years on Playstation, 7 in general, PS4 and PSV aren't PSP). For me an underseller would be around the 50-60k range.

What did the 3DS and Wii U versions of Super Smash bros sell FW? I could see this version outselling those.

Wii was basically dead when Itadaki released on it at the very end of 2011 and the PSP game was an old PS2 port that'd already sold 400k. These sales are low points for the series and the PS4/Vita game bombed even worse than they did. It's an underperformer without question imo.

I doubt Square greenlit Itadaki street Ps4/psv with the expectation that it was going to be the worst selling entry in the series tbh.
