The pricing itself might still be more expensive in Japan, but in the context of the Japanese market, it's still a profound move. The PS Classic doesn't suffer from 50Hz stigma here, and the catalog is thought to be quite good and representative of the PS1.

Moreover, Japan rarely sees coordinated discounts like other countries. It's essentially the bomba bin or nothing at all (until Best Price). The fact stores don't get return protection from manufacturers is another notable aspect. That said, I think the Jump Famicom Mini has also seen discounts, though not to this extent.
It still suffers from the same extremely poor emulation performance issues. In its vanilla state, the PS Classic is an ill conceived product that failed to perform in every market

That's almost unprecedented

It looks like all the locations from the main game are brought over.
It also looks technically more advanced.
Octopath was made on an early version of UE4 on switch and it's kind of not great there.
Looks a lot sharper and you have all 8 of your party out at the same time.
edit: They also removed random battles with enemies out in the overworld? lol

The game looks worse than the Switch game. We didnt watch the same trailer. The lighting and effect work is way the fuck downgraded.

Octopath is one of the best looking games out there and is 60 hours long.

Of course, the writing is often terrible and the enemy design is often bad so that makes a lot of the 60 hours boring, but I don't know if that devalues it from $60, it just makes it less good. The game's writing peaks at Primrose chapter 1 but somehow manages to make Primrose chapter 4 incredibly terrible which is.... not good.

The games writing peaks at Alfyn chapter 3. Where the game actually presents the player with a real moral dilemna. Primrose chapter 1 is great but the game has writing beyond that. Tressa chaprer 4 is also refreshing in the way it approaches the finale. Writing isn't good just because the topic is serious, that's the mistake people make with Primrose's whole arc.

The best arc in the game is Olberic.

Yeah, his was just a monster.

Olberic had the best story overall IMO.

A man of culture I see.

I thought she had one of the more interesting boss fights mechanically and thought her story wrapped up well enough. The only ending I really took issue with was Alfyn's, since his character arc was pretty much resolved in chapter 3 and it felt like they just gave him a boss for the sake of a boss.

Alfyn's chapter 3 ends completely unresolved. What?

Olberic's arc starts super generic and has a "I wasn't the real big bad, it was this other guy!" twist though it as a whole isn't that bad.

Cyrus' story is also super generic and he's a really uninteresting fanfiction insert.

H'Aanit's story feels like it was written by someone who wanted to kill people with bad writing.

Primrose is interesting not just because it's serious but because it's different at first from most games and JRPG. And then by chapter 4 it has devolved into generic nonsense trash with themes and tropes that don't even make sense
is killing an immortal mass murdering child molester because you want revenge good???? Uhh, probably yeah...

Olberic, primrosr and hannit were the best.

Alfyn was terrible. He's got a dilleMa if he should save or not the pacient, when all he had to do was to call the police.

Ogen, in fact, had the dillema of vegeance. But alfyn... what a bad arc. He had the luck to have the best ultimate skill.

One week after release, most retailers have cut Left Alive price over 60%.

Somewhere. I think.
I was trying to buy Ace Attorney Collection on Switch in Shibuya today, but all shops were sold out. Had to settle for the PS4 version instead..

https://objection.mrdictionary.net/go.php?n=8496899

Btw, unless it's reported by NintendoSoup, a game cannot be sold out in Japan :P

Not that it changes the sentiment of what you're saying, but PS4 version charted higher than switch on both trackers?

True, but that was expected. But usually, PS4 version generally manages to chart, so it's quite telling it didn't this time.

Another PS4 5000 yen campaign for March from several big retailers must mean permanent price drop isn't far. If not sales will tank next fiscal year when price goes up again with the anemic software releases it has.

Maybe worldwide price drop in April when Days Gone releases.
Please god! Help offset some of the 2019 decline WW.
Just speculation on my part, but I'd expect them to be waiting for a certain announcement about a certain console before announcing a price drop.
A NINTENDO or MS console? You mean the all digital xbox rumoured for April or at least to be announced then? Yeah days gone + $50 price cut would be a good counter move.

I don't see where this certainty 2m are not happening for XC2 and OT comes from. For XC2 it's a given, for OT we'll see the growth it had at west this quarter.

Xenoblade Chronicles 2
Q3 2017- 1,06m
Q4 2017 - 0,25m / 1,31m
Q1 2018 - 0,11m / 1,42m
Q2 2018 - 0,11m / 1,53m

Octopath Traveler
Q2 2018 < 1,00m (west)
Q2+Q3 2018 - 1,08m (west)
Q2+Q3 2018 < 1,50m

That game looks pretty different.

But, BD2 sold pretty poorly in comparison and the franchise kind of died so maybe
Any sources that said Bravely Second sold poorly?
BS certainly didn't sell "pretty poorly", in comparison or not. It dropped compared to the original game, yeah, but 700k WW for a cheaper sequel on 3DS is pretty good.
The franchise also didn't die considering the mobile spinoffs and some merch, + the twitter account still being active.

Olberic is a real one. Watch your tongue.
chapter 1 was good.
but playing it already almost a year ago in the demo made it boring. No fault to him, but it is what it is.

really didn't like the tournament. That's probably my big issue.
Chap 4 was good though I think.

Primrose tho

Q1 and 2 from X2 were really steady. Then torna and christmas should help it do 2m.

Octo was the one I was less sure about. It could do with a eshop sale if it hasn't.
I can't think of another big older Switch game that hasn't gotten discounted. Even Botw, MK8, and Odyssey were marked down for a bit iirc.

Media Create:

- 23 games released this week, but they all sold low amounts so sales of new games only 68.30% of Week 8 sales
- previously released games did see an increase (109.35%), but not enough to fully compensate for the drop in sales for new releases
- Hardware sales: 125.72% of Week 8 sales, 110.75% of Week 9 2018, market seeming recovering
- Switch Hardware: 128.90% of Week 8 sales
- 2DS XL: 183.06% of Week 8 sales

https://www.m-create.com/ranking/

Dengeki

Fiscal Year as of February 24th:
  • Hardware: 5.49 million units (-18.7%) / 164.8 billion Yen (-12.7%)
  • Software: 24.83 million units (-17.3%) / 162.1 billion Yen (-14.3%)
  • Total: 326.9 billion Yen (-13.5%)
Nintendo Switch:

- Hardware: 3.64 million units (+12.8%)
- Software: 13.28 million units (+61.4%)

Not enough to pull the market up, because every other console is down:
  • PlayStation 4 - Hardware: 1.33 million units (-29.4%) / Software: 8.67 million units (-16.1%)
  • PlayStation Vita: -50% (Hardware and Software)
  • Nintendo 3DS: -70% (Hardware and Software)
FY 2017-18: 406.6 billion Yen, so for FY 2018-19 to be flat, March needs 79.7 billion Yen. Last year had 28.7 billion Yen in March, so yeah... not gonna happen. Question now is how much down sales will be.

Leg-o-Meter, February 2019 Edition:

japaneseleg-o-meterfe31jyg.jpg

Nearly Top 10 Switch already, but not enough evergreens for that yet. A few PS4 titles climbing steadily, but are going to be kept at bay until they drop out of the Top 20 (though DQB2 will most likely fall in next few weeks).

Next week's releases should open around these numbers, give or take something.

Devil May Cry 5 - 150k
Kirby's Extra Epic Yarn - 20k
First day sales don't inspire confidence for DMC5 opening but word of mouth is good and maybe it will pick up at weekend.

For Kirby it's the expected, Nintendo sent it to die. We must see who will be the brave retailer that will stock the remaining SystemSoftAlpha 3DS game in May.

Somewhere. I think.
At least, retailers seem to have sorta learned the lesson after Mario & Luigi. Could be looking at 40% sell-through for Week 1 (maybe even 50%).

***

Just noticed, it's been a while since the last Hatsune Miku game, and not a single one in sight (not even on mobile, it seems?). Feels weird after nearly a decade of annual (and multi-annual) releases.

Last console Hatsune Miku game underperformed and by a good margin. Sega will give series a rest for some time.

Is the mario day promotion also happening in japan (mario games 33% off on eshop and retailers? + switch bundle) and what effect do you people think it will have on week 11 ?

Mario Day seems to be pretty much a west-only thing (because March 10th is written 3月10日 in Japanese, which absolutely does not look like Mario at all... :P). Haven't seen anything announced for Japan, with the exception of Super Mario Run and Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp.

So, according to this Twitter the 1,5 million mark is from January (not now in Mach).
So I guess then than we can extract already japanese numbers from here. And they should be around 400k shipped (1,08m overseas).

So, according to this Twitter the 1,5 million mark is from January (not now in Mach).
So I guess then than we can extract already japanese numbers from here. And they should be around 400k shipped (1,08m overseas).

Estimate for digital sales of OT in 2018 was 100k+.

https://www.resetera.com/threads/me...019-jan-21-jan-27.96567/page-17#post-17526740

Depending on when in January 1,5m target was hit, west has sold a few more copies in January but at least 350k shipments+DL in Japan have happened.

The problem when it comes to talking about the sales of Bravely Second is that it had a ridiculous budget. Recycle A LOT OF THINGS from the previous game.

We do not know the expectations of Square Enix but they could not be high.

If the 1st game took them by surprise why did they skimp out on the budget?

Because after Wada resigned, Square changed priorities. There wasn't place for a high budget sequel on 3DS.
I'm still trying to decide if that worked out for them long term or not, but considering square were practically running to put mid tier games on the switch they know to not throw them away at a momemts notice again

Unless something unexpected happens, every new release will open below 50k next week. One Piece and Division are the "big" releases but there is low interest for them.

Their AAA games had been hit and miss there.

FFXV is probably their biggest hit there and even that had some problem with how the sudden cut down for post content.

Most of SE western studio AAA content also badly managed.

I dont think it had been an absolute successful shift for them.

Because 3DS wasn't a priority for S-E at all. They had more or less given up on it entirely after releasing Dream Drop Distance and DQ7 and only supported it as far as Nintendo were willing to pay them...

S-E more or less completely abandoned 3DS in favour of mobile...

... the fact that almost the entire DQ series came to mobile, while DQ8 and DQ11 came out on 3DS so ridiculously late is the ultimate testament of that.

Even the Vita got more overall S-E support than the 3DS did. The Vita!!

Such a weird decision, its like sqaure relied heavily on sony to carry them. That also explains why they even gave a second thought to putting DQ11 on PS4 and without a 3DS version originally!

It still suffers from the same extremely poor emulation performance issues. In its vanilla state, the PS Classic is an ill conceived product that failed to perform in every market

That's almost unprecedented

I agree.

I was just saying that your initial price comparison to other regions wasn't really relevant in this particular case.

Was DOA6 supposed to revitalize a barren market? Probably should have made a Switch release.

DOA6 apparently had been on development for some time without Switch included in original plans but with the way it sells I don't know if there will be interest to make a late port of a game that underperformed.

At least that's the good from Capcom. Good or bad sales never expect even a late port of a current gen game on Switch.
