The multi-year broadcast deal includes the Overwatch League playoffs -- which begin Wednesday night -- the Season 1 grand finals from the Barclays Center in New York next month and Overwatch League Season 2 next year. In all, professional Overwatch will be broadcast in some fashion on the flagship ESPN network, ESPN2, Disney XD, ABC and streaming services for the term of the agreement.

Overwatch League Finals are being broadcast....ON ESPN 1.

Edit:

Since this is merged, a few other highlights:
  • Does not cancel existing deals like Twitch
  • Is a multiyear agreement
  • Will include hundreds of hours of televised Overwatch content
  • Will have supplemental content for people who might not be as familiar with Overwatch
  • Day 1 of the finals are on ESPN1 at 7 PM. Yes, Primetime Friday ESPN.

Wow. Disney XD's been showing gaming competitions for a while now (heck, I think they showed some Overwatch stuff last year), but ABC is very surprising to me.

The production of the Overwatch League is amazing and it is getting a lot of money and hype that it could be the next big thing. However I just feel the game itself is unable to live up to all those expectations, both for the casual players and on a pro level. I try to sit down and watch it on Twitch but I keep finding myself switching to another screen or another tab on my browser.

ESports are continuing to grow. Listening to the radio this morning, they had on the news portion that down in Atlantic City they're building out a data center in an unused portion of the Convention Center in effort to bring eSports to the city.

This is huge. I hope this goes well for both sides so that eSports could be regularly televised.

I remember when I was young telling my family that esports were going to eventually be a thing that could even compete with traditional sports and being laughed at, but now look who gets the last laugh

Yeah this is me as well. I LOVE watching pro CSGO. I enjoy watching Pro Rainbow Six. Even games like Rocket league and PUBG are fun to watch at pro levels.

Overwatch just isnt.

I will say though, I havent played more than a few hours of Overwatch. Maybe its more interesting if you are way into it. But that isnt a good sign for its growth.

And just looking at the general chatter around places and viewers on Twitch, it feels like Overwatch's push is coming not so much as audience demand but money being thrown at it by Blizzard.

Cool.

Not that I ever got into watching Overwatch being played professionally, I think it's to hard to follow as an spectator. But I guess I'm old and the demand for it exist.

I mean aren't all esports like that? No one watches dota2 or lol without being invested in the game itself. CSGO is I'd say pretty much the only esport which you can somewhat watch without having played the game. This is not the case at all for traditional sports. So no, it's not a bad sign for its growth

I disagree, I find most esports super boring to watch, but really enjoy OWL.

Games like CS:GO and Dota are just snorefests.

This is nice but I wish it wasn't Overwatch. I guess the Activision/Blizzard putting in the work to make this league work has paid off.
