Hey guys, I'm in the market for a new pair of shoes. I'm looking for something that can go with a casual outfit and a semi-formal outfit (like button up and nice pants). If anyone knows a good looking, affordable pair of shoes that I could look into, that would be fantastic. Thanks!

70's Converse or CDG Converse, classy pair of sneakers that really go with anything.

i personally think people who do the sneakers with slacks/button-up /suit look silly. that looks goes in the, unless you're fit, relatively good looking, the rest of the clothes are perfectly fitted, you cannot pull off the look well.

a better recommendation would like a Clarks desert boot or something. that can toe the line between casual/semi formal.

Oh I just assumed it was a button up and pants, I agree sneakers with slacks and a suit is a bit much

My boy tecchan was wearing these pants on an episode of terrace house I watched a while ago. Anyone know if they're a certain type? They had a drawstring and were straight legged.

Hey, what's the best avenue for selling more high-end stuff (in U.S.)? I've got a barely worn mainline Paul Smith suit I'm looking to sell. I've heard Crossroads Trading doesn't give fair value often, and I doubt ebay is a great avenue for that.

So cropped denim is pretty damn nice with nice socks and boots like chukkas or something similar. No rolls, just cropped. Most of what I see, the leg is too wide, or the rim has a worn out treatment which I don't like. But if it looks a bit tapered and clean-cut, then some nice wool socks or something similar pulled up, and then boots, shiny or not, but clean. Looks damn good.
Gonna have to try the look.

Something like second and third guy from the right. Pants are too skinny though.

I have a wedding coming up this weekend and want to order a pair of formal black dress shoes to go with my tuxedo. I'm a size 11.5-12. Looking for suggestions on sites and even stores in the DC area.

Thanks in advance!

Nothing to add to this other than to vent about how sizes are all out of whack. Buying S that are clearly M, then the next you buy is XS and it's fucking tiny. Not to mention it's next to impossible to find XS at most stores.

New annoyance: shirts that fit well except for that they're long as fuck. No, I don't want to rock the curtain look, kthx.

I really don't know of any mainstream brands like them. They are aimed at a particular demographic (well off gay middle age white men) so a lot of there clothing is very out there. Maybe Ted Baker when it's on sale but their stuff is usually a tad more subdued and British. If you ever visit a gay ghetto like Weho or the Castro you'll see a lot of clothing stores selling similar styled clothing from off brands that you never heard of so you may have some luck there. Maybe wait for their seasonal sales like most people without cash to burn do?

Yep, I've accepted that I got to get things tailored length-wise. I know my size and won't buy stuff that doesn't have a size guide, but even then I often have to accept excessive length and then get it tailored, even t-shirts!

Or is it probably some random tshirt from etsy? I'm asking because I made something very similar to this years ago and never had it print.

What is ERA's opinion on Portuguese Flannel and Jack Donnelly?
I own a chore coat from Portugese Flannel that I bought two years or so ago from No Man Walks Alone. It feels nice and I think it's worth the price...but the huge caveat here is that I've never worn it because it's a bit too slim for me. That might not be an issue for their shirts, and if you're someone who can fit into a J.Crew slim (which I can't) it won't be a problem, but otherwise I'd consider sizing up.

I actually bought two shirts from their website recently because they are (at the time of this post) still having a summer sale with everything 30% off. I couldn't believe how fast it got shipped to New Jersey from Portugal and their boxes that they ship the things in are beautiful. I refuse to throw them out. They are small black cardboard boxes with a smaller clear window. I will post a picture later. I am not sure if NWMA uses their own custom boxes or ships stuff using original boxes from PF. I almost bought from them but by the time I got around to purchasing the shirt I wanted from them, it was sold out.

As for Jack Donnelly, they are excellent in my view along with All American Khakis. The only thing about JD is that you have to get it tailored after you order. AAK can tailor for you before you order.

I switched from a very formal workplace (a bank) to a rather informal one (a non-profit), but my wardrobe is pretty much formal wear, sports gear and outdoor gear and not that much in between.. Don't really feel like buying a lot of new stuff since new employee/colleagues don't mind/care what I wear.

Curious to hear what Era thinks about gilets (is that the word in English) like these. Would you ever wear those outside of work or not?

Edit: English word for is waistcoat?

They feel damn formal indeed, especially since they are pretty difficult to wear without a tie. Maybe they can work if you combine the formal outfit with a more casual playfull piece (shoes, pattern on shirt or pants, etc) but that depends on your age and on your confidence to make it work.

What do you usually wear when hanging out?

Well, if I'm at home and don't need to leave the house, I dress like the slobbest of slobs. Comfy sweatpants and nearly desintegrated tshirts from uni time. When I'm out, I usually just wear the dress shirts I wear at work, but untucked. They're mostly tailor-made so they're the best-fitting stuff I have. My former employer thought casual friday was a thing so I've got a couple chinos. I haven't owned jeans in ages, your idea of combining something a little less formal with what I already own could work, thanks!

nmwa ships things in their own boxes, but you get a nice hand written thanks from whoever packs it up

For work you could try to switch from formal to a busines casual/smart casual style, using those chinos and the untucked shirts, since you're already used to wear them like that. Check if you feel it and then gradually adapt your wardrobe from there.

Right now there's an ebay deal on adidas Ultraboost All Terrain shoes. What's the difference between these and regular Ultraboosts? Are they still comfy?

Yeah, it's a nice touch, although I'm now curious about these Portugese Flannel boxes. My chore coat came in a sort of large drawstring bag. The hanger that they shipped with a coat I bought from them is also really nice. I sold the coat, but I still have that hanger.

I actually flipped my camera in landscape mode but still had the box sideways. It is all black (obviously) with a clear opening on the side. <3 it.

How are varsity jackets viewed for fall fashion, speaking as someone who does not know fashion trends and just tries to look decent enough?

They're totally fine for fall, very desirable for certain styles even; the Saint Laurent Teddy jacket is a grail for people who like their rockstar aesthetic.

I would recommend getting a fairly minimalist one, I just think they look better than ones with huge patches.

I was unfamiliar with the style name, but I've seen those jackets before. Very nice with the leather stripes near the shoulders. The actual name brand is obviously out of this ERA member's price range, but it's a really sharp look. I like the ones with leather sleeves in a different color than the body. I occasionally wear one with a patch, but the others are from Urban Outfitters and Old Navy.

I generally like what I see and the price ranges of places like Old Navy, American Eagle, and H&M usually, so that's more my speed. I'm impressed by the style, fashion choices, and brands of posters in this topic! It's neat to see how everyone expresses themselves through fashion!

EDIT: Oh, and thanks for your thoughts!

I love wearing vests (no tie), but way too often I'm told I look like I work at a casino or am heading to a wedding. How do I remedy this? Or is the only solution to stop wearing vests?

I'm assuming you mean a formal vest, like the third piece in a 3 piece suit, not something along the lines of a down/puffer vest.

My recommendation would be don't wear a formal vest unless you're also wearing a suit and it's a formal occasion (you can take the jacket off once you get to your table at the wedding or whatever, but the vest is probably going to look too dressed up for business scenarios). If you want to keep wearing vests in other contexts, get a more casual type of vest like a puffer vest or something.

It's okay, many of us made the casual vest mistake circa 2005-2010. I recall photos of me at a party and I have Logan Paul-esque hair while wearing a bright yellow Threadless tee with a black vest I got at Urban Outfitters, lol
