Didn’t even think about slide making roll useless. Maybe bomb jumps will be more important?
Morph ball could still be necessary for tiny spaces that are more than one block long, or morph ball mazes, or a hole that's halfway up a wall where Samus can't slide to, etc.

Yeah I don't think the Morph Ball will be useless, long tunnels exist after all, I do wonder if it'll get a gimmick though since it seems like they're trying to make a lot of twists on the previously established mechanics.

Kind of surprised how little people are talking about the fact that we just saw a damn BREATHING CHOZO IN A METROID GAME. We only ever seen them as ghosts, statues, and legends of scan visor logs.

Samus Returns Spoilers
Do we think this is the fabled evil Chozo faction that the secret ending of Samus Returns teases?

TYbzTFX.png
It was literally the first thing I posted about:
DkwnXQw.png

Evil Chozo let's go.
People assumed the Chozo are dead but the games never actually say that. Prime shows that Tallon IV Chozo died, but those were a faction of religious Chozo who abandoned technology and left the Zebesian Chozo long before Samus was born.

In like every supplementary story the Chozo simply moved to another planet after the Space Pirates took Zebes. Old Bird is still alive. Samus visits him sometimes.

They seem to be faction of Chozo who REALLY like the Egyptian god Horus and throwing scientists into pits.

Tried to find an image hosting site hopefully this works though I can’t embed it 😭

This background: https://ibb.co/w7CyD8T
Hadn't seen that location before, might be the best room I've seen from the demo. Nice find.

If you are trying to embed the image, you can either copy the url out of the bb code field in the embed options, or right click on the image itself, open it in another tab and then use that url to embed.

On mobile right now so the second option isn’t working :( what do you meant by the first?

Unless she accidentally crashed her ship on his head.

Which comics were these? I have an old hardcover of a bunch of Mario Bros. comics published by Valiant. I wish Nintendo would license their franchises out for comics again.
That's the Super Metroid comic from Nintendo Power. It's not canon but features a lot of concepts Sakamoto considers canon like Old Bird and Samus' suit requiring constant concentration to provide protection.

What's wild is that while we have seen the Morph Ball in the trailers we haven't yet seen the regular old Morph Ball Bomb. I can't imagine a Metroid without it but it's neat that they're willing to mix up the order here. I'm guessing the abilities that appear in the trailer are the earliest, based on what they got in the Treehouse demos.

Well, since you start at the end of the game and have to work your way to the beginning, the morph ball should be the last powerup

Not being able to play a port of fusion on switch is criminal
I'd imagine the big reason they won't is that the money they would make off Fusion isn't worth the marketing trade off of saying you can jump into Metroid Dread with no prior knowledge

If they say "Also since this is a sequel to Fusion, we're making that available ahead of launch!", they probably worry people are going to want to get caught up, and then just never buy Dread.

This has probably been brought up already, but I'm personally expecting another "Amiibo controversy" with this game. Given the last Mercury-Steam developed Metroid game (which I loved) had the issue with the Fusion suit and mode locked behind the Amiibo, and that we have the same producer and dev team, I think they will lock something substantial behind the Amiibo again

What’s everyone’s ranking of the Metroid series?

heres mine, I’ve finished all the main ones except the OG

Prime
Prime 2
Super
Prime 3
Zero Mission
Fusion
Samus Returns
Other M
Metroid II

Samus returns and fusion can swap some days. Also I at the very least like all of the games. I’d say the entire top 5 are GOATed for me, with Fusion and SR being amazing. Truly my favorite series.

If theres even a 1 block height difference from where you slide through and drop down, then your slide is effectively only going to let you travel 1-way through that spot. Morphball can go back and forth easily in that same spot as long as it either has bombs, spiderball, spring ball or just being able to jump up and transform in mid-air. And alot of the metroid games post-prime are really big on morph ball puzzles or even bosses requiring it to win.

i have can't remember being this psyched for a game since botw! which is really wild, as, how one other poster put it, there was a teaser for botw2 in the very same stream and i am still obsessing about metroid!

and it comes out in october??

when the amiibo for skyward sword and the special joycon for skyward sword came and went, it irked me that they went so fast but it's zelda. i have a ton of zelda stuff. masters edition of botw, zelda wii u and 3ds system(s), gold wii remote, gold carts, whatever. nintendo does it a lot.

metroid dread on the other hand - like it's more special. this was something that was in the background for years. after the prime series died, after other m and federation force came and went, people just stopped asking for it. metroid was another thing now. samus returns was just nice to have, and a sign of possibly good things to come. but metroid dread is one of those games. one of those games like skies of arcadia 2 or the last guardian or half-life 3 - where you know they existed at some point, in the background, but never expect to actually see again as companies move on. and for all the waiting the fans went through, living in an at most, 19 year drought since fusion (zero mission and samus returns are awesome), the special thing nintendo does is immediately snapped up and sold at much higher prices.

they need to get better at this. there's actually no reason why there couldn't be enough inventory to go around for at least a full actual day. especially now that the switch is such a success. it really sucks and while i don't care about not getting the special edition as much as others (really only the art book speaks to me), i really sympathize with them.

Somewhere.
You know, thinking about it now, did they ever bring up that this is Metroid's 35th anniversary? It just feels weird that there didn't seem to be any fanfare on that with this game coming up, beside the special edition having art cards and an artbook that covers the 2D games.

I can’t speak on 3D Metroid, but

1. Super
2. Zero Mission
3. Metroid ‘87
4. Fusion
5. Samus Returns
6. Metroid II

I expect Dread to be #3 or 4.

4. Corruption
5. Zero Mission
6. Fusion
7. Samus Returns (I'd rank AM2R above it if it counts)

I've never had the patience to play through M1 & 2, and I just can't get into Other M because of the controls.

I have these, but, I'd like the Dread amiibo, too.

At this point I’m almost convinced that Amazon did put up their SEs, and they just sold out in the blink of an eye.

Anyone know where to find that interview?

Reggie Speaks - IGN

And we listen. NOA's EVP talks DS, Revolution and E3 2006 in this video interview.

This might be it? But seems like it was a video that's now not available?
I wonder if it exists on some really old IGN Nintendo podcast (I forget what it was called before NVC), but I'm positive he, Bozon, and Craig Harris talked about it a bunch many years ago

At this point I’m almost convinced that Amazon did put up their SEs, and they just sold out in the blink of an eye.
Some guy on my twitter feed shared a link late last night and said the amiibo was in stock at Amazon, but when I clicked it it was out of stock

How ya going to put the Anti-Metroid over Prime 1

prime 1 is really really boring and slow. the sequence breaking makes it fun, but i'm not giving retro points for accidentally making an entertaining game. it's got a great atmosphere though. the art direction and the music is pretty fantastic.

prime 2 is generally worse across the board, but sanctuary fortress is sublime. if it was a standalone game, i'd put that part over prime 3.

Favorites:

Prime
Super Metroid
Fusion
Prime 3
Metroid
Metroid 2

Ones I’ve played but have not finished:

Prime 2 (I’m ashamed)
Other M

Ones I have never played :

Zero Mission
Samus Returns remake

--Prime is actually my favorite game period. I typically play it through once a year. I’ve 100% it around 7-8 times.

—Fusion was the first Metroid game I played to completion

—While the gameplay of Other M was a take I could somewhat agree with, I fucking hate and dropped the game because of it’s story and characterization of Samus, along with the game itself just not being that fun.

—I enjoyed what I played of Prime 2 (about halfway through), but for whatever reason I dropped it and didn’t return. Regretful as I have no way of playing any of the Prime games now. I sold my Wii Trilogy like a fucking fool.
