I have a very fond memories of Boulder Dash and some clones of it that I played in my childhood, but newer games rarely managed to evoke the same sensation of discovery, challenge and satisfaction I felt when I played those games. A big reason for that in the Games I played is level design, which ultimately felt a bit tacky, weird comic 3D art styles and a failure to keep things exciting and fresh as levels often revolved around the same idea without keeping in mind the players desire to be entertained and surprised. In other cases these type of games also simply deviated too much from the base concept to still scratch exactly the same itch.

Cue Micro Dash.

I am just going to copy my impressions from the Ukraine Bundle thread, where I regularly posted impressions of random games from the bundle:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This is absolutely fantastic, ridiculously underpriced and one of my favourite Indie Games I played in the last few years. Just calling it a Boulder Dash clone would not do it justice.

This is the inofficial spiritual successor to the original Boulder Dash games in my books and the best game I ever played in its subgenre. The first world alone would be an amazing Boulder Dash game with its varied challenges, very tight and balanced level design that are a joy to puzzle out over several hours. And then the developer added 5 more worlds of that quality. Some of these levels have no clear explanation of how you even finish the level, making it necessary to explore its mechanics carefully, which I absolutely adore. They are also a blast to optimize for finishing and maximizing your score. That score will also be important to unlock further levels down the line, giving you a perfect incentive to perfect every inch of the self-dug labyrinths.

The game also doesnt mess around with modernizing the level of challenge as the levels in the first world are already genuinely hard, but never unfair. They ask you to keep an open mind, be aware of what your surroundings, experiment with the tools at your disposal and is genuinely a perfect continuation of what Boulder Dash started. New mechanics, new items, hidden secrets, TONS of content and replayability for any level. It is a tiny bit unfortunate how relentless the game is in gating its content if you just want to experience the later levels as the game asks you to really get down with the previous levels, which make keep you stuck for a while occasionally. It also doesnt explain its controls well enough (laying Bombs is right alt + direction), but other than that, this is an amazing, amazing game and faithful sequel to one of the most iconic games ever made. I honestly do not believe you could make a better Boulder Dash sequel while staying true to the roots of the series. 4,5/5
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

What is Boulder Dash/Micro Dash?

GIF-23-03-2022-10-47-42.gif

For those who dont know what Boulder Dash is: You try to dig around gathering gems while avoiding being crushed by falling objects. Sounds simple, but in reality makes for some very tense mix of puzzle and action gameplay where you plan out your routes and then pull them off in time. It is actually fascinating to me how so few games managed to find this careful balance of intriguing puzzles (which is kind of a big world sokoban in a way, how you need to be aware of stones positioning/falling) and dexterity gameplay to manage to put your plan into action.
Again, as a quick warning, the game does get challenging, but never in an unfair or cheap way. It might challenge you to think of different approaches, try new strategies or simply observe and see what the elements around you do, but its never impossible. It does have a very retro feel to it in that regard.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Tips (Read #1 & #2)

#1 The game doesnt explain this, but laying bombs is done with the right alt key being pressed and then choosing a direction for the bomb.
#2 Similarly, you might eventually need to grab diamonds without moving. You do that with Spacebar + direction.
#3 You might want to figure out how to finish a level first before optimizing for gems/points. Sometimes you'll find an obstacle in the level thats harder than the rest and it helps do those first before spending time optimizing.
#4 You cant always take safe paths, you will need to create paths where rocks/objects/enemies are following right behind you.
#5 You need points and Opals to unlock later levels. It is worth replaying levels a bit for that reason. (Check the item gif above what Opals are)
#6 Not every level has Opals, just keep playing.
#7 The game allows you to slow things down a bit, when you drop gems/blocks into the path of an enemy so they cant reach you.
#8 Different enemies have different movement patterns, be observant.

I am absolutely aware this thread about an obscure Itch game based on a 1984 game is doomed to fail, but the game is too good not to get some attention <3

Yep, the game evokes the feeling of the original VERY well, which is partly why I love it so much.

that second gif reminds me very strongly of Repton on the Electron. I know it was a boulder dash rip off but I wonder if they actually took level designs from it? or perhaps there are just certain patterns that are common enough that evoke boulder dash so it reminds me of it

The game is very much a love letter to those games and includes many ideas from the originals and expands on it with new items/enemies/mechanics. That particular gif is the first level of the game. It actually wouldnt surprise me at all if the first level is a heavy nod to a particular real level from a classic game.

Also, as I am playing again now, I cannot overstate how fun and varied the levels are. Such a gem of a game.
I have very fond memories of the NES version, though I don't think I ever completed it.
Of the original? Well, best time to get back into your nostalgia groove and join me for a bit playing Micro Dash! :)

So, when I said that the first world alone would make for a challenging and varied Indie Game already... Lets say that the last level of the first world alone would already be its own game to be honest. Its a bit mad. Just a wee tiny bit. I've been playing that single level for an hour now.

In case anyone is curious, I recorded my gameplay of the first few levels:

https://www.twitch.tv/videos/1434270683

Quite a few fails, but gives a good impression of the variety of levels. There is one level element I wasnt particularly fond of, the rest was super fun. Probably will end up recording my whole playthrough as I can see some levels becoming very tricky and there are apparently no videos of the game anywhere. Hope that will end up helping some people who might be a bit stuck sometimes.

This game is new (2021 release), its not a remake/port. It has all new enemies, levels and mechanics and frankly is better than all previous games in the same style before. Its a real treat, do share some impressions! I really need to find a few people who help me finding some dastardly hidden gems haha.

The only Boulder dash game I've played was a European DS game I bought on Amazon called Boulder Dash Rocks. I had a bit of fun with it, I'd be curious to see how this compares. I bet it's way harder lol

I found a game breaking bug, that I was asking the dev to fix and he just uploaded a new version. Make sure to download version 1.3 in case you already started playing. :)

Also props to the dev for handling it so quickly.

And now you got me thinking over that too, but i am not sure how that might even work. Making blocks fall in a way that triggers more blocks?

If you need a hint for a certain level, feel free to ask :) Many levels initially might require figuring out a small trick of how its set up or how to approach it, but the levels dance a very fine balance between hard and seemingly just possible if I retry one more time.

The first time through World 1 took me 4 hours or so, when I replayed it yesterday to record my footage it took me 40 minutes, so its not really impossible to get used to it and learn the tricks of it.

Thats the 2nd level of the 2nd world and this particular level has 3 rather mean little individual and surprising challenges for a player that I dont want to spoil here to figure out and it felt incredibly good just now to find the solutions to all of them. I cannot put into words how satisfying this game is.

I have so many nostalgia flashbacks, I cant even tell you. In case I didnt make it clear in the OP, its a wholly new game though, new enemies, new mechanics, new levels. Have fun and do chime back in so I am not looking like a madman in here talking to myself! :)

Currently a bit stuck on world 2 anyway and I would love someone else to talk about it as there are no guides/videos on it anywhere.

Looked at it real quick, and I'm already stuck, not that I've put much thought into it... and looking at this, maybe I have items to use? I have no idea. LOL Hopefully this doesn't make me feel like Stephen's Sausage Roll (i.e., dumb). Looking forward to digging in (ha) a little more deeply later.

You just need to take a step to the right, haha. :) Two stones that stand on top of each other will fall over if they arent supported. Old school Boulder Dash rules, but I admit that I forgot the intricacies of the ruleset as well over the years.

It reminds me a lot of Pacman in those regards, small little rules that govern the world, like which enemies turn left/right or how different blocks behave with each other.

Haha, yeah, looking at the screenshot and asking how to continue is a bit cute, but as I said, when I started playing Micro Dash I felt like I havent played any of these games in ages. It took me an ungodly amount of time to relearn how these games are meant to be played. So many deaths by my own fault not realizing I will end up throwing gems on top of myself, oh boy.

Speaking of facepalm moments, this one got me real good.

This gem took me like 30 minutes to figure out and pull off the timing of the move so that I can get the enemy close by and hit the right stones to allow me access to the gem. Even the positioning of the initial setup/how you dig out the way to pull this off was surprisingly challenging:
New-solution.gif

And last night when I fell asleep I finally figured out how this particular gem was supposed to be gotten. Just walk up to it and hold Space + direction to grab it:

^^^ That's really cool! Nice new mechanics to balance out the old design/nostalgia.
Yeah, it's a very small change, but that makes for a different dynamic and puzzle design. I was actually wondering if any Boulder Dash games used that mechanic already because of how natural it seems.

I really love most of the level design which are fascinating puzzles, but I just encountered a level where I need to use old school pen and paper methods to map out the level. I'll forgive the developer if it's just that one level, but if that happens more often I am going to die a little bit :P

Going to share the map here later so I am the only one losing sanity about it.

World 2 - Level 10 "The Cube"

I only mapped out about half of the whole thing. I hope its the only map of its kind and I can keep my sanity. Just follow the paths to grab the opals and then make your way to the exit.

Edit: Man, the level after that one is so much better again.

Wow, Boulder Dash, that's a blast from the past!

Not even sure I remembered what the name of the game was, but I definitely remember playing that whe I was a kid.
I sucked at it and it was never my favorite, but it's still quite a nostalgia bomb to see it.

I really should go back to replaying the older games, because Micro Dash feels now how I remember the older games to be, but I wouldnt be surprised if the level design was actually much simpler, being 1984 games and all.

Come to think of it, I am not even sure if most of my time in the genre was with the original series or if it was a clone of it. I'll need to go hunt around a bit for that I suppose.

Just checked out the original Boulder Dash. The first level is definitely a direct homage, which is pretty cute:
4R8gqp7.png

The later levels differ heavily though. One can play the original here: https://www.boulder-dash.com/boulder-dash-online-game/
I completely forgot that grabbing a diamond when standing next to it was already in the original game. Funny how my brain works. Or I might have just never made it to a later level that required knowing that.

After playing it again, it also seems that the original version was a bit less "puzzley" and a bit less punishing for not finding the right path as you dont need all or even most of the gems in many of the levels. I think thats also why I see Micro Dash as much more of a puzzle game than the original games. Those levels are more open ended and free form with many more gems you can get to increase your score, while the Micro Dash levels are often relatively concise and direct in their approach, presenting 2-3 carefully planned challenging puzzles per level (certain exceptions like the warp puzzle excluded).

I don't know if I have the energy to play a puzzle game that is so demanding in terms of execution. The temporal components mixed with a life system is a bit much. I'm too new school and really just want to solve puzzles and have gotten used to games letting me hit the Z key to rewind a move.

Things started to feel rough for me when I got to Abyss and saw the level involved just exploring long corridors that had to be drawn on a sheet of paper to collect all the gems efficiently. Skipped it. I was stuck on Blob for awhile before figuring out to just wait for a minute or so, but I didn't like having to sit there after my first attempt so I skipped it. I had a chuckle at the Avanti level letting you dig very fast. The Doors was a huge red flag for me and after a few attempts I put it down. I got the red opal and entered the teleporter which took quite a few tries to get the timing right, and then I get sent to a whole new area and immediately messed up, sending me back. I'm barely interacting with the puzzle design given I can figure out the solution pretty quick, I'm just hung up on bizarrely punishing execution.

There are things that intrigued me like the presence of key doors in the first level and whether I'm missing opals I haven't even seen, but I think the game's too much for me and I only put in a paltry 30 minutes. I worry the levels will just get more intricate and more punishing with timing than they already are.

My final scores:
Home Town: 1000
Ancient Ruins: 710
Firefly: 640
Butterfly: 1310
Abyss: x
Into Darkness: 1225
The Blob: x
Avanti: 1165

Thanks for trying! Yeah, the game does get rather challenging. I think I pretty much had the same impression with the challenge level on my first tries, stumbling over many smaller bits, but I can breeze through all levels in the first world within 40 minutes or so now. It takes a bit getting used to how the game is balancing its challenge for sure.

Finally made it to the second world and the level design is through the roof. I love these levels so much and I start worrying I get to be the only person to experience them haha.

That's exactly how I felt when I released Snake360 on Xbox Live Indie Games back in 2008. I put 300 levels in there, and they got really, really tough. Then some months later I ran a contest where I offered $100 in Microsoft Points to the first person to achieve a 90% clear rate. Nobody claimed the prize. It probably didn't help that despite my having submitted news about the contest to several major gaming Web sites, zero ran the story.

To this day, I'm not aware that anyone besides me has cleared all the levels. The game is now delisted, but I do plan to bring it back someday...

Anyway, OP, I bet the developer would be thrilled to read your glowing praise. You should send them a link to this thread!

Also, thanks for the heads-up you sent me. Between my current projects and games I'm playing, my time is a bit limited, but I did buy the Ukraine bundle, and I did spend some time with Boulder Dash on my C64 back in the day, so it would be silly for me not to at least try Micro Dash =) When I do, I'll be sure to post my impressions here!

Haha, yeah, thats exactly the mind state I am in. I mean it still has some less thrilling levels, like the Cube one where I posted the map above, but it really tickles that fancy of daring you to figure out its solution and secrets because of how different each level is and how every second level makes you rethink your approach to it. In that cube level, you can collect keys and I have no idea what for. I finished that level and moved on because it was easily the most painful level so far, but I bet there is some stuff hidden there and I also kind of want to know what -_-

I didnt really have the same sense of exploration with many other games recently and I assume its also a bit because nobody else other than the game testers seems to have finished it either. There was a game breaking bug in the first world that apparently no one reported in the last few months and there are 0 videos/walkthroughs anywhere. Even if by pure luck and using up all my sanity I end up finishing the game, I wouldnt be surprised to have missed several secret rooms.

I might go back there once I finished some other levels and I can lose some more sanity.

I was already in contact with the developer and he even fixed the aforementioned bug that I reported, which was cool to see since the game already came out 1-2 years ago. But yeah, if we find a few more people writing some progress updates, I'll probably poke the dev again with the impressions. :) Never hurts to give Indie devs some feedback and is usually not done enough, as you rightly pointed out.

I love Boulderdash and have done since I played it in the 80s on my C64.

Love this game too. Just the right amount of difficulty and plays really well.

Melbourne
I used to play a game called Emerald Hunt all the time, with no knowledge that it was a clone of Boulderdash:

Really fun game! Micro Dash looks like something I'd enjoy too

Just gave it a quick spin (first 2 levels). I can see this becoming very addictive indeed. I'm only just scratching the surface but looking at the icon guide, some of the stuff coming up will lead to very intriguing puzzles. Reminds me a lot of the old Net Yaroze game Rocks N Gems which is no surprise as that's obviously massively influenced by Boilderdash...

Thanks for the prompt Toma. Gotta start somewhere in this bundle and had no idea where to start!

Oh, Rocks N Gems had the mechanic where you could interact with adjacent tiles without moving, btw. Figured that might have been in the original BD (never played it) but I guess not
