Microsoft announced that it has sold 176 million copies of Minecraft, quite a big hop over the 156 million figure they revealed just seven months ago. Despite more buzz around games like Fortnite, Microsoft has kept the game fresh with things like the Dungeons online co-op, a free browser version, a forthcoming movie and now, an augmented reality version called Minecraft Earth. Microsoft added that it has passed 200 million registered users of the Microsoft China edition and completed 130 million Minecraft "Hour of Code" sessions.

Just absurd how much Minecraft has sold. Its funny to think about though. Before video games got super popular kids were growing up with Legos, and now kids are growing up with Minecraft, which is essentially Video Game legos lol

I'm sure the folks at MS must be really happy with the continuing succes :D Can't wait to see what's next regarding Dungeons/Earth and future MC updates.

One of the best games ever made and it keeps getting better with free updates. Say what you will about the bedrock marketplace but you can avoid all that crap and stick with the base game and continually be surprised with that they add to the game.

I hope Microsoft invests some $$$ in polishing this dinosaur. Once you explore one cave, you've explored every cave.

This game is single handedly helping MS to buy up studios and green light risky projects huh?

What a juggernaut. Do we think MS have made back their investment on it? With all this MC news, I was hoping we'd hear that Sony had relented and were allowing MC into their cross-play programme, but I guess not.

20 million in 6 months? Jesus. It's almost like being old enough to start kindergarten. When kids get into gaming this is the game they buy. Non stop business.

Unlikely. The underground and cave systems are the next part of the game that need a huge overhaul. While the actual cavern generation has improved, theres been nothing new added to the underground in forever. Theres the stronghold for getting to the End, ravines, monster spawners, and abandoned mines, and thats it.

They did a pretty awesome job of making the ocean a cool ass place in previous years, and recently made Villages more interesting, so hopefully they are working on the core part of the game where you spend all your time mining now.

While I don't generally think Minecraft should take things from Terraria, being a different kind of game, I think making the underground deeper and having distinct layers similar to Terraria would add a lot.

Sales:
176 million - mid of March 2019
154 million - end of September 2018
144 million - mid of January 2018
122 million - end of February 2017

So 54 million copies sold since Feb 2017. 54 million times $30 is $1.62 billion. They've nearly made their money back just in the last 2 years on just game sales alone. But they bought it in 2014 and make money on a bunch of licensing tie in stuff. Safe to say they are making a big profit on what seemed like a big investment at the time.

This is fucking insane. Although if they keep producing amazing updates like 1.13 and 1.14 then these numbers will continue to rise.

Minecraft is a timeless and perhaps the most open and "free" game ever created.

This. The "mining" part of the game needs to be improved greatly. Underground biomes, new ores, recipes, items, etc. We got ravines and abandoned mineshafts like 7+ years ago, and then they added diorite, andesite, and granite around 4 years ago. And that's it.

Underground needs a huge overall.

Best game that no one made.

Got it all the way back when it didn't even have the survivor mode, for like 5€ (or was it 10?). Countless hours spent in this game. I still go back to it from time to time.

$30 is to high as ASP
The mobile Version is still quite cheap.

Thanks for quoting. Otherwise I wouldn't recognize my March May typo.

Shocking number!
I bought this originally in Alpha way back at the beginning.
Then I bought On:
IOS
PS4
XBO
PC again
3DS
Switch
Telltale full series

Lol! If there are more crazies like me then I can see how it got to such massive numbers.

They deserve the sales! I was in my early 30s when I started playing so I was an adult and the game is just pure magic. It's infinitely replayable and only limited by your imagination. I still play it to this day, on both my Switch and Xbox One X. Can't wait to see where it goes in the future :)

P.S. It came from space lol
