This is porn. You should be ashamed for posting this.

Seriously I love shit like this. Its one of the ressons why I cringe at an all digital future.

I'll admit I had an irrational hatred of minidisc. I was young, I'd just started recording music and was all about that 24bit, 192khz uncompressed waves. These days is use a cassette unfound in the trash if the tape still spooled.

They never were mainstream here, but they were very popular among DJs for recording sets. Some of my friends probably still use them.

Just for you guys, I dug all my old MiniDisc stuff out of the closet.

Oh minidisc. I remember being the only kid in my high school that had one.
I got it around the same time that storage based music players became a thing. One of my best friends got a jukebox(?) and it could store about 20 songs. I felt so superior with my Sony MZ-S1 "sport" MD player. The coloured discs were just the cherry on top.
The only thing that killed it was the Sony software to transfer songs, the name of which I can't remember at all.

A friend recently imported a late 90s rx7 which came with a head unit that only support mini disc. Such a cool format

I used to record CDs to MD using my PS2 and an optical cable. Added the track skips with no issue.

Still have my MD player.

This thread's really making me want to dig out my MD player and listen to some teenage-years compilations I made. Or the Chef Aid album, which my brother gave to me when I got it.

Stunning looking MDs in the OP, though.

My very first camcorder was this guy, the Sony DCM M1. I loved it! MiniDiscs were so cool for their time. Wish they had lasted longer lol. Wonder what happened to that old camera now that I think about it.

What on earth was the name of music transfer software? Sonic fire?
I seem to recall going through a major overall.

Optime of cool. I only had one which I recorded over, but I always thought it was the most futuristic looking thing.

Can't make a cyberpunk-looking future with just digital storage.

I used mine up until 2007 or so to record my voice lessons. Handy little device.

Worked in radio during highschool and got on the MD train somewhat early-ish, was a massive upgrade from tapes for any kind of active use(godsend for snowboarding). Got this model around 1998, most of my school friends had no idea what it even was.

MD never catching on in the west is one of the great technological shames, the format was clearly and overwhelmingly superior to CD's and they were the best way to listen to music until MP3 players became affordable and mainstream.

I remember being blown away with the MD kiosks in Tokyo where you just throw in a re-writable disk and a 100 yen coin and downloading any song you want onto the disc.

The best part of the minidisc devices was the MD recorder at home then taking the player out and about. Loved it.

Loved minidiscs. Got a portable player in 1998 and copied all my friends' CDs onto discs.
The sound quality was incredible, I was convinced it sounded better than CD, but in hindsight it's probably just that my minidisc player was far better quality than anything I was listening to CDs on at the time.

Minidisc is like the Vita, never lived up to it's potential and died young but was loved by almost everyone who owned one.

There's got to be a store or website that makes these into jewelry or something, right?

They're very A E S T H E T I C

I used to label the discs so meticulously with those tiny rub on Letraset transfer letters. I'd take a pic and show you all but they're in storage 30 miles away.

Damnit. I want to dig them out and have a nostalgia rush.

I wanted one back in the day but was too poor. Was a kid. This pics are nice, but the definitely do not motivate me to pick up any. Streaming is so vastly superior it's not even funny.

Man I fuckin loved MD back in the day. We had Japanese exchange students back at my college and I had to pick up a player after seeing it. Still have my Sharp DR7 and Sony RH-1 Hi MD recorder.

I miss the plastic clickity-clack of physical media like this. So satisfying to place into the slot and shut the hatch into place.
there were kiosks/vending machines in train stations/electronics stores/music stores that would have the ranked singles of the week/month or certain albums and you'd put a re-writable minidisc into the machine and get your song for a hundred yen or so.
Wow.

A MD thread, this is my time to shi... oh I already replied to this.
I still have 3 working MD recorders (one is standard MD, the other 2 are Hi-MD, one of which is the only model that can transfer recordings to PC as WAV).

This thread is super nostalgic, I basically lived on minidiscs throughout my teenage years. I probably still have some blanks I never used.

The Japanese player-only units were the most impressive. They could be much smaller without recording capabilities.

I had the "gold" version of this Sharp player. It was awesome. I still have it I think.

I also had this one, which was incredibly light, and awesome to hold:

Even 20 years later and the format being obsolete, I still think "now, this is the future" when I look at mini disks and its media players. Beautiful design.
