Minidiscs look too interesting for a format that is not visible during playback

I'll admit I had an irrational hatred of minidisc. I was young, I'd just started recording music and was all about that 24bit, 192khz uncompressed waves. These days is use a cassette unfound in the trash if the tape still spooled.
They never were mainstream here, but they were very popular among DJs for recording sets. Some of my friends probably still use them.

Oh minidisc. I remember being the only kid in my high school that had one.
I got it around the same time that storage based music players became a thing. One of my best friends got a jukebox(?) and it could store about 20 songs. I felt so superior with my Sony MZ-S1 "sport" MD player. The coloured discs were just the cherry on top.
The only thing that killed it was the Sony software to transfer songs, the name of which I can't remember at all.

I used to record CDs to MD using my PS2 and an optical cable. Added the track skips with no issue.

MD never catching on in the west is one of the great technological shames, the format was clearly and overwhelmingly superior to CD's and they were the best way to listen to music until MP3 players became affordable and mainstream.
I remember being blown away with the MD kiosks in Tokyo where you just throw in a re-writable disk and a 100 yen coin and downloading any song you want onto the disc.

The best part of the minidisc devices was the MD recorder at home then taking the player out and about. Loved it.
Loved minidiscs. Got a portable player in 1998 and copied all my friends' CDs onto discs.
The sound quality was incredible, I was convinced it sounded better than CD, but in hindsight it's probably just that my minidisc player was far better quality than anything I was listening to CDs on at the time.
Minidisc is like the Vita, never lived up to it's potential and died young but was loved by almost everyone who owned one.

I regret missing out on the Minidisc edition of Flamingo Funk Vol. 1. Still managed to snag a vinyl though.
Man I fuckin loved MD back in the day. We had Japanese exchange students back at my college and I had to pick up a player after seeing it. Still have my Sharp DR7 and Sony RH-1 Hi MD recorder.
I miss the plastic clickity-clack of physical media like this. So satisfying to place into the slot and shut the hatch into place.

I actually just dug my RH-1 out after seeing this thread. Been listening to it for the last hour. Forgot how damned clean this thing sounded. It's still a beaut too

The Japanese player-only units were the most impressive. They could be much smaller without recording capabilities.
I had the "gold" version of this Sharp player. It was awesome. I still have it I think.
