Wait wait wait. What is this about an iPad screen?

..I happen to have an iPad right here!

edit: Oh, I guess it's this:

Gotta do some research.
I think it’s only iPad 3 screens although I see 4 mentioned a couple times. I don’t know a ton about it, only that it exists and seems to be a good option. The laser bear link has links in it to the screen and driver board. Smokemonster has tweeted about it in the past, check the mister forum too:

https://www.misterfpga.org/viewtopic.php?f=33&t=819

I’ve been playing on an iPad3 display (I think I linked an inexpensive screen from eBay earlier in the thread) and it’s been great! I’m very close to finishing my build, and I’ll post photos when it’s complete. Feel free ask any questions you may have.

I'm at a weird place with MiSTer as it pertains to Neo Geo.

I have a Neo cab and a couple home cart systems (though I got rid of my home carts). I've been thinking about ordering a flash cart to clear out my massive pile of MVS kits. But honestly MiSTer satisfies this pretty well also.

I hear you. I am 90% done (just need controller and to wire up the PSU) on a MVS supergun setup and I am wondering why I am bothering. But I will set it through!

This is the kind of conversation that takes place in the ‘official misterfpga discord’.

I left the SmokeMonster discord a few months ago and there were similar conversations in there. Sentientsixp / Sentient6 in particular was very keen to adopt a weird centrist attitude to just about every topic and now retweets Gina Carano.

As coverage and news continues to build up around the platform it would seem like now would be as good a time as any to bring this kind of stuff up. There is bigotry and hatred towards BAME people amongst senior members of the community which is holding development of the platform back.

Worthwhile to note that the above account is now attempting to dox certain people, which doesn’t seem like a great idea.
Seems like they deleted the channel that this was in. Sigh. Gamer spaces are all the same. I left the classic gaming discord for a similar reason.

That's pretty fucked up and I feel bad for djhardrich that he had to put up with that racist shit. He's an awesome guy.

Sentient6 doesn't really contribute directly to mister, but if you use the mister at all you've almost certainly used things that Rysha has worked directly on. She's a big contributor to the mister project overall.

So was Sentient6 trying to stretch for some Dr. Seuss preservation angle because they aren’t going to PUBLISH some books anymore? That would be like arguing that Nintendo had to keep NES games in print forever.

Wow there is some fucked up shit in here from both of them. Sentient comparing a company deciding to not publish work the company itself deems racist to nazi book burning is fucking ridiculous.

There’s some definite libertarian, Joe Rogan watching vibes from the community. Makes sense given the core demographic is millennial white males.

Unfortunately this is pretty much most nerdy hobbies online. The communities that seem like they are OK to interact with only seem that way because of most people keeping their shitty opinions to themselves. Given the opportunity you get shit like you see in those tweets. It's pretty much "ignorance is bliss" when you are in a community without strong moderation where you aren't seeing stuff like that.

Finally figured out how to get Jotego's beta cores to work. Looking forward to seeing more CPS2 stuff in the future (isn't figuring out Q-Sound the big hurdle at the moment?).

Tried to mess with my ini files and use my cheapo VGA to composite adapter again but just kinda threw in the towel. Just can't figure out the magic settings to get this thing to display most cores on my little TV I picked up. Maybe for the best, anyway - the screen geometry on it is pretty rough.

Did have OK luck getting Neo Geo to display on it. Made it all the way to Krizalid in KOF 99 before remembering how bullshit the second half of that fight is. Good ol' SNK Boss Syndrome.

So I got my MiSTer setup today (I went the lazy route and paid a little extra for a complete unit from Mister Addons - thanks, Biden Bucks). It came loaded with a pre-installed MiSTer system, but the card was only 8GB so I installed everything to a 64GB card instead. So far, I've messed around with the SNES, NES and GBA cores, plus I set up a Windows 3.11 installation for the ao486 core. It's actually a lot easier to set up and use than I was expecting - even the 486 core was pretty straightforward for things like floppy swapping.

I'll probably give Neo Geo a go next. At some point I need to get a small CRT TV (people actually charge money for these now! You couldn't give them away 5 years ago unless they were Trinitrons...) and get analog video working.

I'm starting to look into the Mister, what are the differences between the Analog and Digital? Is one better than the other?

Digital only allows you to output to HDMI. Analog allows you to output to HDMI and Analog (Component, VGA, etc).
However Digital comes with a power switch and will have leftover free pins for possible new add-ons.

Rysha is one of the main MiSTer programming people...

Sentient6 is a admin in both the official MiSTer discord and the Classic Gaming one.

Smokemonster is responsible for making these amazingly organized, fully comprehensive ROM packs for retro console flash carts and arcade flash carts and was a very big MiSTer cheerleader in the early days. He used to make lots of YouTube videos about it but has stepped away from the scene almost completely. The attention Smoke brought to MiSTer is probably the only reason we have these advanced cores that we have now.

Smokemonster's ROM packs live on as scripts in Github that you can use to organize your own ROM collections.

Some real sketchy rationalisation going on in those posts - but as noted above can't say I'm surprised given the demographic. The Nazi book burning bit was pretty toe curling - wtf.

OK so I carefully followed the .txt file in Jotego's CPSII update today and SFA2 etc all work perfectly. But I need a sanity check:

I've played a lot of SFA2 on the Saturn, back when I owned my first Saturn in the late 90s and again since I picked up another one a year ago. Recently I've been playing on a SD CRT and loving life.

Anyway, on to my question: SFA2 on MiSTer is noticeably more responsive and seemingly even runs a bit faster vs. the Saturn version (selected "Turbo" at the SFA2 character selection screen for both). Have I been living a lie all these years thinking the Saturn version was near arcade-perfect? Mind you, the Sat version is still amazing, and moreso I definitely prefer the audio mix on the Saturn version.

Those composite adapters are nice, but we really need someone to implement support directly into the framework.

It's not really necessary since it can simply be transcoded from either RGB or Component video. The problem has been that there wasn't an existing commercial product that would do it and also properly maintain 240p video. You'd end up with 480i which doesn't look right at all.

In its first beta, I'm not quite sure if SFA2 is arcade perfect yet... but Jotego is a stickler for ultimately having arcade perfect cores so it'll get there if it isn't already.

As for the audio in the Saturn it's most likely better because Saturn has better audio hardware, and CPS2's audio is inherently aliased as all hell. It has been discussed that there is some kind of audio low pass filter happening on CPS2 cabinets which is not simulated in this core, we are just getting the raw PCM audio. But the audio is faithful to the CPS2 aside from that filter.

I'm running SFA2 Gold on PlayStation right now and it's definitely using Redbook CD audio that is incredibly superior to the aliased mess in the CPS2. But again, the MiSTer CPS2 audio is faithful. And yeah the MiSTer version is way more responsive. It really is night and day.

Is it just the low pass filter missing? It sounds like it's more than that.
You can tell the low end is almost missing but the samples are super aliased, and they sound very smooth on a real board.

For example, on the "Round 1" "Fight", the aliasing is super pronounced.

Even though this second clip is not a direct capture, that's how it always sounded to me.
I had the board for a few years. Still have an Alpha 3 kicking around.

I think you’re right about there being an issue. Certain sounds and voice clips in Puzzle Fighter are very harsh too. Background music otherwise seems fine so it would be interesting to know what is going on there.

Heck yeah, the SPF2 voices sound like they're filtered through a worn-out Taco Bell drive through speaker.

Also as for the Saturn vs. MiSTer SFA2 speed, I figured it out. The Saturn lets you select up to 8 levels of Turbo in the option menu; default is 4. If you set the Saturn to 6 it is equivalent to the arcade board set to "Turbo 2" or "Free Select 2" in the Test menu.

Jotego is a G though. He will figure it out in time.
I'm just waiting for Dimahoo. I really wanna get back into it, on the arcade cab.

The weapons and armor collecting mechanics on that game are rad.

Hope everything is alright with Josh, the cave core developer, he's been radio silent for a while.

Might be worthwhile comparing to above video of direct capture from a darksoft board via an OSSC. I can understand if there’s an amount of ground noise or similar on the OSSC capture but there seems to be a pretty noticeable difference in the ‘Round 1 Fight’ voice clip.

I’ve posted a quick reply on the patreon post. With any luck there will be some useful feedback over the next few days that will help narrow down the issue.

I was trying to cheese Nanairo quiz by using the core credits screen to pause the question timer. A lot of stuff I have no idea about (and a lot of names that I'm not going to be able to read even if I know the answer) but I did get a question about Knight Rider correct lol.

AFAIK, CPS2 games on Saturn were great ports, but seldom "arcade perfect". For example Sat didn't support the 384x224 resolution, and cropped the games horizontally.

They are the same. Analog allows a vga output where the digital has an on/off switch. I made the mistake of buying the digital thinking that was the only way to get hdmi output, but hdmi is on the nano itself. You apparently you can get a cheap hdmi to vga adapter that works for converting to analog output
