I'm pretty sure it is, judging by the way it looks weirdly asymmetrical when used as a vertical stand
Also the description just says "base" not "horizontal base" or "vertical base"
They're using 64Gib NAND on 12 channels.
64 x 12 = 768Gib = 825GB

I think it can stand vertically without the base, but because you need one horizontally, they may as well make it usable on both position lol

The stand is probably at least required for horizontal positioning. Which sounds good though IMO, more airflow underneath the system.

You would be surprised how many people think it is 1tb and this is it with the OS taken off.
It's a proprietary custom built SSD, that's probably their excuse for it being that size.
A little-off topic but I'm sure Astro's Playroom is fine for what it is but man, the pre-installed game should be Dreams.
I kinda just want to know if it's 2.1 bandwidth capable, or if they're going to cheap out on a buck or so with a lower bandwidth one.

There are definitely people rich enough but dumb enough is the real question
Console uses 12 channels from SSD controler to NAND chips. If it was normal 8/16 setup they could have stuck to the traditional storage size.
Will this become the new concern topic for PS5, just like "3.5mm audio jack is missing from DualSense"? :)
All pictures seem to indicate the stand is mandatory either horizontal or vertical
I'm not that concerned, I just want to know if I need to buy one in advance or not, rather than set it up, sigh and then have to pull it all down when a new HDMI cable arrives.
