Uncovered by The Independent, cybercriminals have been using Fortnite to shift money stolen from credit cards off of the dark web.

The stolen cards are used to buy V-bucks, the virtual currency in Fortnite. Typically, V-bucks are purchased to buy in-game outfits, weapons, emotes and other items in-game. For Fortnite and Epic Games, V-bucks have been a massive revenue stream, with over $3 billion net profit for Epic Games in 2018.

For cybercriminals, V-bucks are purchased off of the stolen cards and then re-sold for a net profit off of the dark web at a discount rate. This allows the stolen money to be "cleaned," in other words, made more legitimate through a standard transaction. Most of these transactions are done through cryptocurrencies as well, to make further money transactions untraceable.
"Criminals are executing carding fraud and getting money in and out of the Fortnite system with relative impunity," stated Benjamin Preminger, senior intelligence analyst at Sixgill. "Threat actors [a malicious person or entity] are scoffing at Epic Games' weak security measures, saying that the company doesn't seem to care about players defrauding the system and purchasing discounted V-bucks… This directly touches on the ability of threat actors to launder money through the game."
This is not the first time Fortnite has been implicated in an online scam. The Independent also reports of other research firms, such as Zerofox, finding over 53,000 different online scams relating to Fortnite within the timeframe of a month. Most of the criminal activity has grown as the popularity of Fortnite has risen. It is estimated that an 86% of the scams were shared via social media, making them susceptible to vulnerable consumers.

How do you re-sell vbucks?

You don't.

Everything about this article feels like it was written by someone who has no idea what they're talking about. At all. Remotely.

The sources linked in the article have nothing to do whatsoever with the notion this article puts forth about "Buying and re-selling V-Bucks"

One of them is about fake "Free V-Bucks" sites that are Phising operations, another is about shovelware apps on Google-Play/App Store which are used by credit-card thieves to siphon money (doesn't even mention Fortnite at all in the article), and one of them is basically the same article which this one basically copied verbatim - Which also has no fucking idea what it's talking about.

Here's a quote from the article's source-article:

"While completely stopping such criminal activity is extremely difficult, several steps could be taken to mitigate the phenomenon, including monitoring the transfer of high-value goods in the game, identifying players with large stockpiles of V-bucks, and sharing data with relevant law enforcement agencies."

There is so much shit wrong in this quote. You can't "Transfer" V-Bucks or any items at all in Fortnite. There is no trading or anything whatsoever. And since when did having a lot of V-Bucks become a felony?

Oh and by the way, the party that carried out this "investigation" is The Independent - A fucking infamous terrible clickbait-bullshit site.

CONCLUSION: This entire article is bullshit clickbait with a half-assed investigation done by a bunch of old men who have no fucking clue what they're talking about.

This is where "platinum' resellers got most of their plats and some people will still buy them, then promptly gets banned. The shit show is even made worst in Warframe since you can trade items with platinum between players, if you got those "black plat" by trading with someone who got them, the platinum in question will be automatically deducted from your account and if you owe more than you own, bam instant account lock until you buy the platinum back at MSRP to get your account out of negative.

Not only that, people can received gifts from random people and if those gifts are bought with black plat, you guess it, you are responsible for paying for it. This is exactly why I turn gifting off in game completely, and refuse to play their stupid "Tennobaum" holiday gift exchange event.

It's a standard procedure to "launder" money with in-game money in online games. You get dirt cheap vbucks or other premium currency and to do that you give that sites your account information, they log into your account and buy them with stolen credit card data. Nothing new with fortnite.

You can do that, yes, but ultimately the source article is saying that V-Bucks are being sold, not Accounts that have V-Bucks. The quote in The Independent's poorly researched Clickbait article specifically referred to "High value items being traded". Which is impossible, as there is no Trading system in Fortnite (other than dropping guns to eachother in BR, which have nothing to do with V-Bucks at all)

Besides, the real money to be made with Fortnite for criminals is hijacking old accounts with early-season Battle Passes with now rare skins like John Wick.

The only thing you can resell is accounts with skins and etc on it
Or sell accounts with vbucks on it

Think my friend sold his for cash since he was afraid of a chargeback but he got like $200 for his with the OG ghoul on it

So if you use stolen cards to buy skins then sell the accounts that might work but it's probably baby profits now since lots of skins get rereleased

Yeah I agree the article is 100% bullshit, especially with your comments here.
I've only had a (very short) fight in fortnite so I'm not up to speed on the apparently non existent trading system there.

Probably sell the EPIC account. With account merge coming soon it's probably an easy sell even, as people soon won't even have to give up their main EPIC account.
At the moment it might be disabled, but you can gift items from the store too, so people could be buying accounts with a bunch of V-Bucks and buying items to gift to their main account .

This smells like bullshit
It's not.

There are two ways of making money from Fortnite

Either by selling accounts with sought after skins, or by selling vbucks at a discounted rate (made possible because vbucks are cheaper in Argentina, I believe). The person requests your login info and they login for you on the Argentina store to do this.
While these two types of transactions can be relatively "legit" (as legit as buying another person's account or letting someone login to yours, anyways), it's also extremely easy for carding scammer to take advantage of and launder money through.

Money is money and a lot of people want V-Bucks, so account sellers probably. Buy a bunch of cheap accounts from the dark web and flip them on other more accessible sites
