Jumped back in last night after around 9 months break (beat the base game and have iceborne installed).

Yikes I got my butt kicked and realized i need some ice armor for iceborne...any suggestions on how to best prepare/get back into the swing of things before tackling the dlc?

you don't really need any new armor for a little while. I would play through the Iceborne story until Barioth or so, then slap together whatever suits your weapon from the MR armor you've unlocked at that point

Assuming you don't do any endgame content or free title updates for base game World (no Archtempered gears, no FFXIV gears, limited deco selection, armor sets with non-augmented DEF, etc) you should focus on gearing up first.

Iirc you can craft Master Rank basic Iron/Bone weapon even without beating Beotodus. After you beat Beotodus, craft some Master Rank armor sets from Beotodus or G.Jagras.

I have pretty much the best stuff you can get in High Rank and even then still took me 15 minutes to beat fking Beotodus. I imagine it would me much more rough if you only have the stuff from base game story.

yeah figured this. I play with insect glaive so excited to see what can do with that!

Is Furious Rajang HBG a maassive upgrade over Safi Aquashot for Sticky?

Depends on how you build for it and what your willing to sacrifice for damage to get your preferred playstyle.

Shield sticky HBG can be comfortable if you learn not to get get greedy and fire when you should have stayed still and guarded, as firing off sticky 3s with recoil 1 is a dream. But you sacrifice a 20% further from damage cap per shot if you go narga pieces for true spare shot instead of artillery 5, which for stickys is really really useful in general and can even out dps wise, and is especially useful on a slow reload like the new jang HBG. With a 4 clip with ammo up, it just works and feels good but that's all you'll be doing with it. You can reach the sticky cap with more offensive skills but you sacrifice TSS, which I don't recommend. Recoil 1 means you can hold off for a second after a KO, reload, then time it so that you emptied a clip on their head just as they get out of it to start building the next KO which feels great to pull off.

Aquashot requires evade reload which is definitely more work to pull off, but the dream of TSS/Artillery 5 is still godly when reaching the cap, and because it's LBG and constant avoiding, you retain alot of mobility and the status ammo is easier to pull off because of it.

That all said, I didn't find it a big enough upgrade from aquashot and the previous HBG. On the old rajang HBG, I could easily fit special ammo up and a wyvern heart mod to unleash a fucking ridiculous barrage of damage every 2 minutes when a monster goes down or is mounted thanks to focus 3 as well. So yeah, it comes down to playstyle preference because there is no amazing outlier.

So decoration set on mantles are applicable only when they are worn? So does it mean tool specialist dec doesnt work if i equip them on one?

Did you already burn through selling the thousands of useless mats from monsters you will never make an item from? You can essentially clean house on anything non master rank outside of gems since new monster weapons all have their own tree.

It's a great deco for mantles. You equip a mantle with Tool Specialist, and while it's active it lowers the cooldown on the other mantle. If you put it on both mantles you can increase your uptime a lot.

Are there any other decos people usually put on mantles? I only unlocked the slot for the ghillie mantle so far, but I'm wondering if there are any good strategies I other than the Tool Specialist.

I usually put divine blessing or health boost in the mantles. I've seen people using agitator or any other jewel to increase damage.

I used to put stun resistance 3 into the glider mantle because it has so much uptime. tool specialist is great tho too

I've seen people put extra element resistance on appropriate mantles, and people used to put Challenger decos on stuff before Raging Brachy made that shit super free.

I usually just stick with Tool Specialist though.

I put Peak Performance combo decos in my Health mantle. Math guys are probably cringing at the unoptimal use of slots but I pat myself on the back for coming up with this ingenious idea lol

Wow. Decided to step out of my comfort zone and learn how to play with the Hammer yesterday after playing mostly with bow, gunlance, and hbg in Iceborne. It's so much fun, I really forgot how fun melee combat is in this game and smashing a monsters head in with the hammer is so satisfying. Definitely breathed new life in to the game for me.

That's why I'm rotating all weapons regularly, it literally never gets old. I'd even go as far as saying people who are just playing with one weapon experience just a fraction of the fun and limit themselves unnecessarily.

I agree but my old brain isn't that agile. I can be good with 1-2 weapons but I can't retain that skill if I keep switching around.

It reminds me of when I was a teenager and my main character in Tekken 2 was every single character in Tekken 2. I can't do shit that like anymore. :(

Jfc last time I see you still have 100 for each.

I'm not as dedicated as you so my graph is all over the place ranging from 453 (SnS) to 90 (IG and DB). Planning to get to at least 100 usage for each but I dont have energy for IG and DB...

Are you still active in squad ? I started to play the game again and I didn't see you last morning sunday (should be saturday evening for you).

I'm active on the squad but mostly on shorter bursts. This means I play more days but fewer hours each day so it makes it less likely that we meet each other.
Last week I was closing my session when pixxelz logged in which is a bit of a shame but hunting while being sleepy probably means I would be a hindrance to my teammates. Mostly so when people are probably logging in to hunt The Raging and the Furious.

i am playing normal gunlance and i was looking at safi guides for the GL but i was so confused because every GL i got was normal shelling and the guides say to use wide or long and i was like dafuq. i think i figured it out though, you can awaken them to get long/wide shelling, right?

You can awaken Safi Gunlances and get Wide or Long Shelling lvl 6.

If you want Wide 7, you need either the Raging Brachy or Furious Rajang Gunlances, and I don't think we have a Long 7 yet.

i am playing PC so we don't have those monster variants yet. in fact from what i can see those two gunlances are really powerful

haven't been on (PC) since Rajang—is Safi actually fun? or is it (like KT and Xeno) just 10 minutes of pumping damage into a lump with a hitbox?

so i made my safi GL into a long 6 - is the playstyle basically just trying to attach a wyrmstake and then spamming chargeshots into the affected area?

I've not played since right before Rajang was added (ps4) , aside from doing that (which I believe unlocks more GL areas?) what else I miss?

I know new Xeno type, safi, with nuke attack.
Any other new monsters?
The raid monster not added yet right?

Any major system changes?

Plan to get back in next week and don't wanna pass anything over.

Thanks for any answers.

Super Turbo Rajang Championship Edition
Raging Brachy (awesome gear and weapons)
Layered weapons! But only a very limited number of weapons can be altered.
They turned on every event quest so we have plenty to do while stuck at home.

The new monsters are not in the GL. They have their own quests so they're easy to farm.

The actual fight is good. However just like KT, the siege structure kinda hurts it in the long run (however unlike KT, Safi is full fledged fight right from phase 1).

Unless something changed since the release of Iceborne, yes. However apparently Wide 7 Gunlance is now as good as Long 6 for charged shot playstyle ?

The last three IG players I played with, all three did nothing but spam the aerial attack with the first two spam helicopter attack and the last one don't even get red buff (yes, including when the monster is downed).

Capcom really need to rethink the weapon in the future, they advertise it as aerial based weapon and yet most of it's damage came from ground based attack.

I'm not sure this is true. The game is terrible at giving any sort of guidance at all.

I'm happy with IG being ground based for best DPS, with aerial attacks for mobility. I don't want it changed to favour helicoptering. What I do want is for Capcom to teach their players better. The game should drill us on the basics, and we'd only need Youtubers for advanced stuff.

I don't know how to fix it though. Co-op allows people to play like absolute clowns and still get kills, and they probably believe they're doing well. Those players you mention amuse me (although I agree they're frustrating). Like, IG isn't even fun without red and white buffs. It feels awful.

IG needs a rework. You can say it does good DPS on the ground, but on the ground it feels like a LS with less options. As the only aerial-focused weapon in the series, it should be better in the air than on the ground.

And people keep helicoptering around because it looks cool and feels good to do. If people like playing the weapon in a specific way, why not make that the best way to play the weapon? Why try and change their minds and get them to play "the right way" when clearly they don't think grounded combos are cool or fun to do? This isn't like corner-horners who are clearly playing the game wrong because they aren't doing any damage, aerial IG players just aren't doing the best damage.

I see your point. The thing is, aerial play, as well as being fun as fuck, is much safer than ground play. If aerial play becomes the most efficient way to fight (which I'm not opposed to) it should also be the riskiest way to fight. That way we have an interesting risk/reward mechanic.

This is something that need fixing. A friend and I were helping kill nightshade paolumu and he kept getting kill with one hit by his spinning attack even at full health so I decided to check his equipment which is something I never do and not only he was wearing high rank gear it was low defense gear and he didnt have any useful skill. He was using a bow and was running stuff like max might and a buff of 1 level skills. He was like HR 50 or something but it was clear he didnt understood skills at all.

After that I've been checking others people builds and I have seen people running offensive guard with HH or other useless stuff. I think a solution will be to introduce decorations earlier in the game and explain better how they work and also maybe add a reward system based on how good you play like getting better mats if you finish faster or avoid getting damage that will encourage people to be efficient.

At least make aerial attack actually deals decent damage, so even if people spam aerial attack at least they still contribute damage. It doesn't need to replace ground based combo for primary damage.

Also I agree with DrArchon, IG ground based combo is super boring and yet it's where most of the damage came from.

Also I might be missing something, but is there any reason to use the new aerial downward thrust over the normal aerial slam ?

Just grabbed Iceborne on the PSN Sale, I haven't touched the game since May last year so I'm ready to sink another 100+ hours into this. Any essential tips/advice for returning players like myself? Also, what weapons are the most fun to use now? I used CB most of the time in the base game but I want to spice things up a bit now
