hello everyone,

I'd like to test your gaming knowledge, and have prepared a series of monthly riddles. I've been doing this for a while in various english & german online communities (about a dozen by now!), and would love to include ResetEra if there is interest. Please know there is no financial or marketing motivation in this, I'm just doing it for fun.

The riddles can be about finding all eight games used in a fake screenshot:

...or about guessing the right games from 25 cutouts:

There's even a sound FX quiz once or twice a year, you can take a look at those here: http://www.retrogamequiz.com/

I'm confident there's lots of gaming geeks here that will score well on any of these. :)

Feedback is welcome, the october quiz still has one week left... if no one shouts STOP I'm going to post it here in a few hours!

October Quiz - Sound FX #2

bleep bleep bloop... it's time for another round of sound FX from the world of video games. A few months ago I did this for the first time, and received a lot of positive feedback. So it was clear I'd eventually do it again. :)

The Resetera community is late to the party, so this round has only one week left... so far, forty people have participated. The average score is less than 10, so don't hesitate to try your luck!

Warning - this riddle is especially difficult... again. Even if you only recognise two or three titles, just participate regardless. Keep in mind it will be like that for all players, even the winners had lots of gaps last time.

As I can't post sound effects in this Forum (the picture at the bottom is just a dummy), I have outsourced the quiz.

Here is the quiz: www.retrogamequiz.com

Participate via this google doc: www.nerdquiz.de

Deadline is Tuesday, October 31st... have fun! :)

October Quiz - clues #3

Watch out, you've got only three days left! There's forty participants now, but the average score is still below 10.

Therefore... here are the very last clues from me:

1) Game 14 is a sports game from the 90s.

2) For number 8 I originally uploaded a different sound, and only changed on October 1st... this one: http://retrogamequiz.com/08a.mp3

3) Hey, the same for number 9! ;) http://retrogamequiz.com/09a.mp3

4) Sound 11 is a speaker message from a totalitarian regime.

5) And at last... the jingle of game 10 (an old platformer) is played at the start of each level.

That's it - now you're on your own. Good luck, you've got time until Tuesday.

Here is the quiz: www.retrogamequiz.com - Participate via this google doc: www.nerdquiz.de

November Quiz - Retro Pixel

So, it's time for a more pixelated quiz... this time you have to guess some twentyfive 2D games, mostly classics - but you only have the zoomed-in faces of the main protagonists to work with.

I hope that's to your liking - the poll in the last round showed a clear win for this type of quiz. :)

I wish you luck - and don't forget: the correct answer is the name of the game, not the character.

Deadline is Thursday the 30th of November, please participate via http://www.nerdquiz.de/

here is the quiz... have fun! :)

November quiz - hints #1

Hey, November is already half over? Did you all join the quiz yet and solved every last pixel there is?? ;)

So far there are 21 participants, none of which are from this community.

Here are some hints, to help with the hardest titles and most common mistakes:

1) game Nr.2 is a racing game.
2) number 7 is a scifi strategy game from the current decade.
3) title #17 is an Amiga game, a rather generic 90s platformer (solved by no one!).
4) with the 18 we see the first installment of a famous RPG series (solved by no one!).
5) and at last - game 21 is about a famous civil war.

I wish you good fortune, and don't forget: the correct answer is the name of the game, not the character!

The deadline is Thursday, 30th November - please participate via http://www.nerdquiz.de/

@DDayton: Yeah, there will always be new-ish games with a pixel-look mixed in - but in this round, everything except 7, 10 & 25 is between 10 and 30 years old.

@FallenGrace: It's not a beginners quiz, true. :) The lowest score at the moment is 5, and I'm still waiting for some regular participants who don't do well with Retro titles - you wouldn't be far off!

@Liam: Hey, you can easily update your submission many times - Just enter username, forum and all additional titles you forgot (or just found out), leaving everything else blank.
Once the deadline passes, all entries with the same username/forum combo will be joined!

So no need for grief, just update your missing answers. :)

November quiz - hints #2

Everybody watch out, the quiz is almost over! Many people from many different places already joined (current newcomers are the communities from ResetEra, Retrogamer and the English Amiga Board)... while every game has been found out, we are still waiting for someone to score full points... a place in the top 10 can be had from 13 points onwards. :)

So far there are 40 participants in total, and four from here.

Here are the last hints - hope that helps!

1) In game nr.5 you control a squirrel in a platformer.
2) In the puzzle adventure on image nr.12 you control several goblin characters, all of which have different abilities.
3) Number 14 has you drive a tank, which you can also leave to walk around as a foot soldier.
4) The name of game 17 consists of three words, two of which start with an M. :)
5) Mea Culpa to image 18 - this japanese RPG confused me with its "right-to-left" direction: the displayed character is not the player, but just an enemy! This makes this game unnecessary hard to get right... by the way, there was recently a spin off to this series released on the Switch.

Good luck, and don't forget: the correct answer is the name of the game, not the character!

The deadline is Thursday, 30th November - please participate via http://www.nerdquiz.de/

@Cow Mengde : Really, that's rare. Before todays hints, only 5% of users had that one figured out. :)

FUCK! I wrote Trolls on 20, then I changed it to Stone Protectors!!! WHY!?!?

Also, why is my score 16.5? I'm guessing it's because I listed Fix It Felix Jr as Wreck it Ralph?

Dezember quiz - knights of ResetEra

The theme of the month is "knights"... so put on your armor, draw your swords and let's do this. :)

Here is a general FAQ to this image quiz series:

- to participate you click on the link in this post, it leads to a google form. There you can give your best to figure out the names of the 25 games shown in the quiz image.
- if you want to change or update your entry, no problem. Just open the google form again, enter username+forum, and then leave everything blank except for your updates. Once the deadline has passed, all entries with the same user+forum combo will je joined.
- the winner is the user with the highest score. If there are several people who got all 25 games right, the winner is the one who sent in the earliest.
- If there is a draw with lower scores, I use "weighted" points. This means that a game that has rarely been found out is worth more than a simple title which almost everyone has gotten right.

Deadline is Sunday the 31st of December - please participate via http://www.nerdquiz.de/

Here is the quiz... have fun & happy holidays! :)

Question. Do we name the knight, or the game he's from? Cause you have 2 knights with the same name in there.

It was game title for the last quiz, so I assume it'll be the same here.

I'm pretty certain of 14 games so far. Uncertain on a few others: 24 is particularly maddening because I'm 100% sure I know that sprite, but can't for the life of me bring to mind where I've seen it.

Cow Mengde : Axass is right, you name the game - the name of the dude doesn't matter. :)

Also - you had half a point due to "Wreck it Ralph" last time.

December quiz - clues #1

So, it's christmas soon... hope you're not too disappointed, but the only presents I am bringing today are some clues for the current "knights" quiz. :) Here we go!

1) the knights on the pictures 1, 19 and 25 are all called "Arthur".

2) title 9 doesn't show the original version of this rpg, but instead a graphics mod (my mistake)... the interface visible in the upper end is still the same though.

3) one franchise shows up twice in this quiz.

4) images #13 and #15 are not ingame scenes, but instead show the cover.

5) with glasses and hair loss... the sword fighter on picture 21 is my favorite :)
CoV0Z0o.png

In total we currently have 70 participants, six of which are from this community.

Deadline is Sunday the 31st of december - please participate via http://www.nerdquiz.de/

December Quiz - clues #2

Wow, look at all these people - with 90 participants (of which six are from this community) this is already the biggest round of all time! :O

This is partly due to the "old maniac forum", where the mods are handing out amazon vouchers to the winners to give something back to the community (a server-financing promotion had gone much better than expected)... but of course the other communities were very active as well. :)

Watch out - the december quiz ends on new year (UK time), so sunday night!

Here are the very last clues... don't forget to participate or update your existing entries.

1) The number 2 is a well known action game from the first person perspective.

2) the knights in game 7 and 22 are both called "Lancelot"

3) The 25 is a graphic adventure from a time before "point & click" - here we are still using old fasioned text entry.

4) Those who name a Dreamcast game for number 6 will only get half the point.

5) The 18 is a strategy game from a german developer.

One last thing: Usually I give half points for vague or half-wrong names, but I got things mixed up for number 4 & 12 - those two will now get you full points even if you're only half right. ;) The same goes for game 17 - that's a really big series, you don't need to find out the exact installment.

Please participate via www.nerdquiz.de, deadline is Sunday December 31st.

Here is the quiz image, one last time: https://i.imgur.com/ly4fFSW.png

Qwark It's completely up to you how much effort you want to put in - it's just that in this round, people from the maniac forum (https://www.maniac-forum.de/) had a stronger incentive because there were Amazon vouchers and even a SNES Mini for the winners. It'll be less serious again in the coming quizzes. :)

Fiel Only half the people got Game of Thrones right anyway - so nothing to feel stupid about.

Thank you all for joining, hope to see you again come February! :)

February quiz - Wunschkonzert #2

hello everyone, wheeeee it continues: gaming quizzes for the year 2018! Ten times you'll get the chance to be NUMBER ONE among all these gaming nerds, and to score points for yourself and your forum. ;)

We start with a Wunschkonzert... wait whats a "Wunschkonzert"?! Well it was a popular concert show long ago, where they'd play what you asked for. Just like this quiz! Every title has been a wish from a user in the last Wunschkonzert.
So I filtered a bit, but otherwise had no hand in the games you have to find out this time. :)

All clear?

There is a wild mix of games going on... from the 1980s to all the way to 2016. More Windows PC games than usual - please use the form to enter games you like, so the next Wunschkonzert is more to your liking. :)

Deadline is Wednesday, February 28th - participate via http://www.retrogamequiz.com/

here is the quiz... good luck & have fun! :)

February Quiz - clues #1

Everybody, it's not my fault - as I wrote in the initial post, other users picked the games this time, don't blame me that it's difficult. ;)
So far people achieve barely 10 points on average, so it's not an easy start into the new year.

To not have anyone despair any further (35 participants so far, one from here), here are some clues:

1) Not all screenshots are gameplay. Nr.2 is a loading screen, 18 & 22 are intro- or cutscenes, and Nr.23 is a start screen.

2) In game number 9 you have to move balls around. The title first appeared on the TurboGrafx, and later as a download game on Wii and WiiU.

3) Title 20 is a Lucasfilm game from the 80s.

4) Game 19 is the toughest in the entire quiz (just 9% got it right so far). It plays in the D&D universe... and it doesn't start with a "B"! :O

5) The 21 is a fighting game for the Nintendo Game Boy.

Deadline is Wednesday the 28th of February. Please participate via http://www.retrogamequiz.com/

have fun! :)

February Quiz - clues #2

Alright, the first instance of this years quiz season is almost over... deadline is in two days! There's 50 participants right now, one of which is from here.

Lowest entry is just two points, so feel free to join in before Wednesday midnight. :)

Here are the last clues:

1) Game number 1 is from a series that had its beginnings on the GBA, later installments also stick to handhelds.

2) Titles 5 and 8 are N64 games.

3) Screen 7 shows a C64 game.

4) Number 17 is a Metroidvania.

5) The series that game 22 is from has been made into movies several times.

Deadline is Wednesday, February 28th - participate via http://www.retrogamequiz.com/

February Quiz - Wunschkonzert #2 - answers & score

The first quiz of the year is done, and 67 people joined... three more than with the last Wunschkonzert, very nice! :D

Don't forget the special rule: all that correctly guess their own game, get a +1 bonus point if they stay below 20 points total. But whoever does NOT recognise his own game, gets a -1 penalty instead!

Each title has a spare line that explains which user had wished for that game.

Now we first have the names of the games as text, then as images, and the scoretable comes at the end of this post.

March Quiz - Fake Screenshots #3

I really enjoy reading feedback to my all of my quizzes. One thing that's clear is that you all seem to really like the fake screenshots that are pieced together from eight individual games each. :)

So, let's do another round in that format! There will be four fake screenshots in total, and I will post a new one every four days. Each Image is a completely different genre, so hopefully there will be something for everybody.

Deadline is Saturday the 31st of March, please participate via http://www.retrogamequiz.com/

Here is the first out of four quiz images... the theme is 3D Jump'n'Runs, have fun! :)

Image 2 of 4 - realtime strategy games

Where the first quiz image had mostly console games, the next one is reversed: Here you have a majority of Windows PC titles from the 90s (between 1989 and 1999).

Good luck! :) Please participate via www.retrogamequiz.com

Image 3 of 4 - P'n'C adventures

oh dear, this round is more difficult than I thought... once again. -_-; On average, the participants (22 in total, one from here) score less than half of the 16 points possible so far - and those were the "easy" pictures! ;)
Until now we had well known classics (and one obscurity for each image), but picture number three is more mixed. In part genre defining classics, but also average titles and obscure games. Also the age range is twice as wide, from 1991 to 2012!

Will you still dare to try your luck?? :D

Image 4 of 4 - Game Boy Shooter

"..."

"...say, how can we make the fake screenshots even harder?"

"Even harder?! Our users already have trouble keeping up - so far we had 24 possible points, and the average score is EIGHT. -_-"

"Nevermind, these are nerds, they can take it. Come on, brainstorming!"

"Oh dear, well then. Mmmh....how about Shmups? That's a niche genre."

"...too easy!"

"Okay? Then... we focus on a single console, that'll decrease the chance of people knowing something!"

"...too easy!!!"

"What?! Well...we take an almost 30 year old handheld with a resolution of 160x120!!"

"TOO EASY!!1!"

"MADNESS!!! Then we use less classics, and instead add some obscure nonsense no one knows about!"

"Perfect!"

- - - - - - - - - - - - - -

So, here it is... the fourth and last Image of this round. Participation isn't that high yet (26 users), and high scorers with over 20 points are nowhere to be seen - there are even games that haven't been recognised yet!

Feel free to roll your eyes at the Game Boy picture - just remember that it's tough for everybody and try your luck regardless. :)

One quick hint - only six of the games are pure shooters, two also count in other genres.
But now here we go: HAPPY QUIZZING

March quiz - fake screenshots #3 - clues

It's just six days to the deadline - so far participation has been a bit low, 35 users in total and two from here. I hope there's going to be a few more until next saturday. :) It's a difficult quiz, average score is about 10 points out of 32 - and two games have not been found out at all!

a quick disclaimer: I am taking a break next month, users in the maniac and powerplay forums wanted to run their own quizzes. Check those out if you can't get enough. ;)

Now - time for the clues:

image 1:
1) release date years on image number one are 3x 1996, 2x 1997, 2x 1998 and 2000.
2) I meant to take the first instance of a famous playstation series, but accidentally ended up using the 3rd part. It won't matter when evaluating the score.
3) Four titles are multiplatform (PC & Console), two are sony exclusives, one Nintendo exclusive and one only for Amiga.
4) One of the games is actually not 3D, but just 2.5D.

image 2
1) release date years on image number two are 1989, 1992, 1995, 1996, 2x 1997, 1998 and 1999.
2) Due to its genre this image has a focus on PC titles, but only three of the games never appeared on consoles. Four are multiplatform, and one is exclusive to a Sega console.
3) One of the games is sometimes called the "inventor of the RTS genre".
4) There is a title on this image that appeared on the Commodore Amiga, but another one (with a very short name) sadly didn't, even though the developer had a strong Amiga history.

image 3
1) release date years on image number three are 1991, 4x 1995, 1998, 2008 and 2012.
2) Just one game of these did not appear on PC.
3) One of these PnC adventures is a license game to a really crap German movie.
4) There is a game here that hasn't been found out! It has a russia/communism theme and average reviews.

image 4
1) release date years on image number four are 5x 1990, 2x 1991 and 1993.
2) One game shares its name with an arcade title and a playstation 3 game.
3) Next to shooting, in one game you rescue POWs and take them back to base.
4) Here is the other game that hasn't been found out! Fight enemies and clear the path for a ground tank by moving boxes with a hook.

Deadline is Saturday 31st of March, participate via http://www.retrogamequiz.com/
