Well, I guess I'm happy with my top ten finish. I honestly don't remember which ones I answered and which I had guesses but decided not to enter anything. The thing that amuses me is I know I checked Crazy Taxi, Jet Set, and Space Channel 5 videos trying to match the sounds but I don't think I put answers in for all of them (maybe just Crazy Taxi?) because I couldn't confirm the sound location even though I knew I was close. Those were really eating at me.

I was so certain #4 was Spelunky and was proud of myself for figuring it out. Damn.

And I looked at Duck Tales immediately but couldn't locate the sound by skimming a couple videos and moved on. I'm pretty sure I didn't bother answering since I couldn't match the sound to any videos of gameplay but I didn't spend much time looking.

November Quiz - Woof Woof the Dog Quiz

May I introduce, the dog on the picture above is Pepper. He's my dog, a six year old Yorkshire Terrier / Shih Tzu Mix. He is a totally good boy, and would be thrilled to know this riddle is dedicated to him.

AHEM, so this time it's about dogs! Across all years and systems you now have to recognise games from the pictured dogs. Sometimes it's easy as the main protagonist is a dog, sometimes it's hard as we are only talking about a background or side character.

Ah well, I am sure you can do it. :P

Deadline is Friday the 30th November, please participate via http://www.retrogamequiz.com/

Here is the quiz... have fun! :)

November Quiz - Clues #1

Wow (Woof?) that's a lot of people, more than thirty in the first three days - great! :) After two weeks it's now 50 participants (four from here), I'm happy you all like this round.

Many of you recognise the first few titles, but towards the end it still gets difficult - which is why nobody has achieved to get full score yet.

By the way, we welcome a new forum to his quiz series - the Retro Canteen is already in it with three users: http://retrocanteen.boards.net/thread/1375/monthly-retro-gaming-quiz :)

Don't give up - here are the first clues:

1) Game 1 und game 19 are license games to TV shows.

2) Watch out a bit on the games 6, 8, 10 und 14 - on these I have already given a few "half points" for unclear or too-far-off answers

3) For the most part game 16 plays in various hospitals.

4) I don't like it when that happens - but one game of the November quiz was already in last months SoundFX quiz.

5) Game 22 frequently makes you decide in morally & ethically complicated situations.

Did that help a bit? Go search the game buddy, go search! Good boy! :P

Deadline Friday 30th November, participate via http://www.retrogamequiz.com/

November Quiz - Clues #2

Awww, good boy! There's sixty people in the quiz now (five from here), that's great - dog biscuits for everyone! ^_^

This round is coming to an end soon, though... the deadline is this friday! Therefore, please enjoy these last clues:

1) The following games got released for the playstation 2: 6, 13, 18, 21 and the 25.

2) Picture 10 shows an arcade game.

3) Number 18 and 21 are the only Survival Horror titles this round.

4) Game 22 was made in this decade.

5) Picture 23 shows a game from an Atari console.

This has to be enough... Go search the game buddy, go search! :P

Deadline is Friday 30th November, participate via http://www.retrogamequiz.com/

Alright, the hints pushed me to do a little more digging though I knew I was on the right path with one of my updated answers. There's only one game I simply can't even get an idea I'm in the right direction so I can't wait until the answers come out because it's driving me crazy. And you've even given a hint for it so it's not like I should be this clueless!

Yes, number 16 - hardest title in this round with a pretty mean screenshot. I guess you will have to wait until Friday night! :D

I'm so annoyed with myself because one of my first thoughts was Trauma Center for #16 but I dropped that idea pretty quickly and went down a futile path. I should have dug into that original thought more.

I only had three I didn't know until you posted hints and from there I got Rule of Rose and Scrapyard Dog. I recognized the Rule of Rose screen and knew it was from a PS2 game but I didn't bother putting much thought into it hoping a hint would make it easier. Scrapyard Dog I'd seen before but had zero idea how to find it until your hint.

This was a fun month, albeit on the easy side, but it's nice to have a quick month now and then.

Seems I got everything I guessed right. Left Trauma Center, Jet Set Radio, Gods will be watching, and Scrapyard Dog blank. I had no guesses. I quite liked the pupper theme :3

December Quiz - Hackers

So, what are we hacking today? The blast door to the mainframe? The memory chip of that android? A virtual server somewhere in cyberspace? Some killer AI gone rogue? Or are we just doing a fun hacking minigame or watch a "hacking..." progress bar?!

No matter if just a tech-savy sidekick character or the central gameplay/story element, hacking is our theme for December - the last quiz of the year.

It's gonna be a bit harder than the dog quiz, but I hope you'll have fun regardless. :)

Deadline is Monday the 31st of December, please participate via http://www.retrogamequiz.com

Here is the quiz... good luck. :)

December Quiz - Clues #1

Okay, so far there are 33 people trying their luck and knowledge this round, none of those from this community. Have you joined yet? Will you after this set of clues? :)

1) Several games are based on famous movie licenses: Number 2, 8 and 10.

2) The 17, 19, 21 and 25 are also license games, but the source material is very mixed... we have a Manga, toy line, offline-RPG and book license.

3) The oldest game (fifth row) was released in 1985, the newest title (third row) just came out in October this year.

4) Picture 9 shows a turtle.

5) Picture 11 shows a robot mechanic. He gives you an item that lets you hack and take over other robots.

Here is the last full set of clues - there'll be little more than a small reminder next week, so best get moving:

1) With the exception of the last row, all games this round appeared after the year 2000.

2) The following games were published by Ubisoft: 4, 5, 15, 16

3) For this rounds last five titles, three are from the 80s and two from the 90s.

4) Game 1 shows a female hacker in a popular AAA first person shooter.

5) Number 6 is the only game in this round that was also released on the Sega Dreamcast.

Deadline is Monday the 31st December, participate via http://www.retrogamequiz.com/

Here is the quiz again, good luck and merry christmas. :)

Alright, felt pretty good about my answers. I figure I'll rank fairly high. I'm really annoyed I didn't know one of them and I put in an answer or two that I fully expect to be wrong just for fun.

December Quiz - Clues #3

Watch out folks, this quiz ends on monday - you only have the weekend left! 54 people are in so far, that's not bad. Three of them are from this forum.

Christmas is over, and so are any excuses - come and join the last riddle of 2018! :)

1) Number 7 is not System Shock.

2) Borderlands is not in this quiz at all.

3) The same goes for Lawnmower Man.

4) To get a full point for number 17 you have to give me the name of the specific toy line this license game is about. The big brand name only gets you half a point.

5) Come on now, "the world" is not the correct answer for Game 19!

Deadline is Monday the 31st of December, join in via http://www.retrogamequiz.com/

Here the quiz a last time - good luck & a happy new year! :)

I like this set of hints. It feels like you've seen a lot of the same wrong answer and you're trying to curb that.

Thankfully I'm fairly certain I got full points on all mentioned or didn't list those specific games. Two of the three I didn't know at all I expected because they're out of my area of expertise and the pictures don't give me enough to search well. I expect I'll have played or own #13 but can't figure it out. It looks familiar and if I haven't played or owned it I'm pretty sure I'll know the game decently well.

December Quiz - Answers & Score

2018 is over, and so is the fifth season of this video game quiz. With 73 players it was a good finale, thank you everyone. So, who is the master hacker who got all points in this one? Hold tight, there's TWELVE people who got full score!
Ten of those are from the old maniac forum, where (just like the year before) the admins did a lottery with amazon vouchers from surplus affiliate earnings of the year.

So my thoughts on the three I didn't answer:

State of Mind is sure enough a game I've looked at and pretty sure it's on my wishlist but didn't have enough familiarity to recognize it.

Interphase I pretty much had zero chance of guessing.

Beneath a Steel Sky really steams my beans. That was my first thought and so I did a quick Google and then ruled it out. I swear I looked it up several more times because I just felt sure that's where it was from. I've never really played the game so I was basing it off of just art style recognition more than anything so I just assumed I was wrong and moved on.

Anyhow, fun quizzes. Looking forward to February.

If there's another month with a focus on an older generation of games than I'm familiar with, such as the Commodore quiz last year, that's a good chance to take me out of the running at least. I didn't even try that month because that's where I wouldn't know any by sight and would have had to skim through hundreds of screenshots to try to make matches.

HIGH SCORES 2018

The year is over, and I'd like to announce some overall winners (and winning forums) from all the contestants and points of 2018.

As this quiz is a competition among several online forums (18 in total!), I'd like to start with the community ranking and explain how you score points for your forum.

F7eiYQq.png
SCORE HIGH

If you make it to the top 10 in any of my quizzes, you gather points for your forum:

Getting first place (by having the highest or generally full score) makes 5 points - a gold medal!
There can be more than one if several users have perfect results.
For place two you get 4 points. Silver!
For place three you get 3 points. Bronze!
Those who make it to rank four, five or six... they get 2 points. (iron medal)
And who at least makes it to seven, eight, nine or ten... that's a wood medal and worth 1 point.

FGdHkIM.png
ENDURANCE

Frequent participation also gets you points for your forum, that's how you can contribute even without lots of nerd knowledge. ;)

If you join the quiz five times without a break, you get 1 point. I call it a half marathon.
Those that make it for ten quizzes without missing any (e.g. from mid 2017 to mid 2018) get 2 points - a full marathon.
As an addition, if you binge through the entire last year without leaving any riddle aside... that's even 3 points.
And for the most faithful, the MEGATON: 4 points for those that participated on 30 quizzes in a row.

If you say that's crazy - five users out of the almost 200 last year scored that prize. :)

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Alright, this is how the participating forums have made it through the year:

A round of applause, 11th place for the Resetera community!

That's a bit below average, but I don't blame you - this forum updates at such a high pace that my quiz gets drowned out almost immediately. But still, just by your enormous userbase alone you have the potential to even beat the almighty old maniac forum. Maybe 2019? ;)

The RetroGamer community is being excluded (too few participants), and the same goes for the VierPfeile forum (that score is the work of a single user, administrator Cebix). The RetroCanteen comes in as a new Challenger.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

This abstract community score aside, who actually made the points?

The following users made it into the top 10s:

iron medal - 2 points - Wibblewozzer (Multiplayer Quiz)
iron medal - 2 points - Wibblewozzer (Dog Quiz)

wood medal - 1 point - dearodie (Retro Pixel Quiz)
wood medal - 1 point - Wibblewozzer (SoundFX Quiz)

The second category is endurance... this is how your forum did:

No points - Wibblewozzer & Frump managed to get the last four riddles in a row, but that's it. If you don't miss the February quiz you'll score a point in this area for 2019. ;)

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

And before I forget, here the winner of the last survey:

Alright, you like pixel-riddles and a bit on the easier side. Got it. :)

Fun stats! Well, of course I'd like them since I did fairly well in the rankings. I didn't realize you did an end of year scoring like this but I wouldn't skip the quizzes I know I'd barely be able to answer if they'd help the overall scoring. I didn't do Commodore or Retro Pixel (I believe) because they weren't strong areas for me. In fact I don't think I knew a single Commodore answer with a quick glance so I just skipped it.

Hopefully you can get more participants this year. I've dropped a link a couple times into one of the Era Discord servers I'm in with no luck but I'll try again periodically since I'd like more competition from this forum.

Season 6 - March Quiz - Retro Pixel #3

No big intro, the image quiz is back! After a two month break we start again with lots of new riddles and I hope there'll be lots of participation from this forum. :)

We begin with a classic, those zoomed up pixels... no matter if we call it "Minimal" or "Retro Pixel", you know what to this will look like. ;) The game mix crosses many genres and platforms, and there's everything from "decades old" to "not even released yet".

March Quiz - Clues #1

There's about 30 people (two from here) so far, and in hopes of getting some more I'll send out a handful of clues now. :)

1) Several games are based on famous movie/comic/book licenses: the 2, 3, 6, 9, 19 and in some way also the 17.

2) Number 23 is the newest game, an action platformer that will be released this year.

3) Game 25 is the oldest title this round, it has a "wild west" theme.

4) On all pictures except 6 and 25 you can see the a player character.

5) The titles 21 and 24 were released exclusively on the Commodore Amiga.

March Quiz - Clues #2

Getting the difficulty right is always really tricky... I really thought this round is very balanced, but now the average is still very clearly below 10 points. I'll do better next time! :D

Anyway, there's 40 people in the quiz now (two from here), and you have exactly one week left to join. Let's go - here's some fresh clues:

1) The games 4, 15, 16, 18 and 20 were released in this decade.
2) Title 17 is the only first person shooter in this round.
3) Number 20 is a Metroidvania released on Steam and one console.
4) Title 8 is a franchise with one remarkably bad 3D game.
5) Game 13 is a point and click adventure that was never released on console.

Deadline is Sunday the 31st of March, please participate via http://www.retrogamequiz.com/

Alright, submitted. Should be better than the average but I had to finally just give up with a handful blank or filled with garbage answers out of frustration. I (think) I recognize #25 but it's simply not coming to me. Argh!

March Quiz - round ending soon

Alright folks, the first round of 2019 is coming to an end this sunday. At the moment there are 60 participants (six from here), which is a really good start. However the average score is still below ten points.

As these are the last clues, may I ask everyone to man the keyboards? :)

1) Number 14 is not Scooby Doo!
2) Number 19 is not Dragon Ball!
3) Capcoms Ghouls'n'Ghosts was inspiration for number 18.
4) In game 20 you control a robot.
5) Picture 25 shows a thief.

Deadline is Sunday the 31st of March, please participate via http://www.retrogamequiz.com/

Here is the quiz again - good luck!

Alright, updated my answers. This last batch of hints mostly made me go back and look at stuff I already considered and was able to find matching images. But #14 and #19 still elude me. There's a chance I'll get #14 still as I feel like it's right there on my brain. But #19 just looks too generic and outside my tastes to know for sure so I doubt I'll randomly figure that out despite the hints.

Another first-timer here. I'm a little disappointed in myself to only be able to get at most eight of these, but entered all the same - thanks for running this!
