Fatal Fury
Mortal Kombat
Street Fighter 2

I think that's all I recognise from this one. I'm not a big fighting game fan.

R89tW27.png

Dark Forces
Duke Nukem 3D
Wolfenstein 3D
Doom
Shadow Warrior
System Shock maybe?

I don't know any of the others.

Nice idea for a topic.

EDIT - shit; I've just replied to a post that's 18 months old!

Well, I am happy I at least got Super The Empire Strikes Back right, would be a shame with my username otherwise. Interesting that only 34% got The Dig right, I thought this game was very popular.

Also assumed I would end up somewhere in the bottom, but being in the top half is nice.

Ha, the one time owning Space Ace on SNES as a kid helped me in some way! Those bottom two rows were just brutal though. Great quiz and cool to see more people joining in this time!

Some of those took real work to dig around and get the game titles. And I was fairly close to the two I missed. I had an inkling of an idea for Space Ace and searched Space Quest and was frustrated it wasn't a match. I knew I recognized the character but just wasn't placing him.

I recognized the Toriyama art of #19 and went through the list of games he's worked on designs and then after that I did skim his anime and manga list but he had so many I relied on me recognizing a title. Unfortunately I don't know Go Go Ackman so without that prior knowledge I couldn't randomly pick that one from the list.

Oregon Trail I surprisingly thought very early on but with a quick skim of a couple screenshots I didn't find an exact match so I dropped it. Your hints then threw me off further from the scent as I looked in other directions. I finally went back to Oregon Trail because I felt so certain and probably spent like ten minutes poking through videos and screenshots before the right combination of words showed me that thief and I was confident. I even wrote the title in on my second entry when I updated a few answers frustrated I couldn't find a match but then came across it.

Not to shabby for a first participation ! :)
I would've gotten one more point with Strider but was too late for the edit.
Looking forward to the next round !

April Quiz - MS DOS Classics

Not every videogame childhood starts with a console. Maybe it was the family PC, where those who knew the secret words ("CD" or maybe "DIR") were able to launch magnificent games. To honor this, let's have a round focused on titles that were started via MS DOS... I made sure to pick a lot of classics, so that also pure console users have plenty of chances to score. :)

Due to the topic the selection relies mostly on games from the 90s, which is hopefully okay for most contestants. After the feedback regarding difficulty from the March quiz I made this round a bit more friendly - You all have fun and good luck!

Deadline is Tuesday the 30th of April, please participate via http://www.retrogamequiz.com/

here is the quiz...

I'm pretty sure I did better than I expected when I first saw the title but there are a bunch that I just have no idea on.

April Quiz - Clues #1

PC master race incoming - looks like you are enjoying this round! The quiz has been up for just a week, but already over sixty people are digging out their 90s memories to try their luck on these DOS classics (eleven from this community).
It probably helps these games are actual classics and not just some japanese obscurities. ;)

Nevertheless - here are some clues for you!

1) Watch out, some titles might yield only half a point if you don't get the series entry right... I'll decide that by the end of the month.
2) Game 2 and game 3 are classic western RPGs.
3) With the numbers 4, 6 and 8 you are looking at realtime strategy games.
4) 12, 13, 14, 15... here you control spaceships, either for a few sequences or the entire game.

Deadline is Tuesday the 30th April, participate via http://www.retrogamequiz.com/

Here is the quiz again, good luck: https://i.imgur.com/tjJ1grW.png

I guess that we're not getting any more clues at this point? I'm short of a full set by a frustrating three of the last ten... but I guess that I just need to get my answers in now.

Thanks again for running this, Mr_Horizon!

Hehe, cheers - no criticism intended with my earlier post. Sadly, those don't get me any closer to filling my gaps, and just tell me that one of my others (though which was, admittedly, a bit of a stretch) was wrong. :(

Very nice - glad to have improved somewhat from last month! Just wondering, do you keep track of cumulatives (over the year?), or just per-month results?

Either way, thanks for continuing to run this.

Yes, there is a big excel file that tracks every users score over every quiz, going back for years. There's an end-of-year high score table once every ten rounds (usually in the first week of January).

Texan365 give me a few days and I will dig out the solution image, it's an older riddle. :) Which games did you figure out so far?

Off the top of my head:

1. Dhalsim stage from Street Fighter 2
2. Courtyard stage from Mortal Kombat
3. Terry Bogard from Fatal Fury
4. Pow meter from Samurai Shodown

I was then able to Google Siren and Ashraf from FX Fighters (never would have got that haha), but can't figure out the left fighter, the lights in the foreground, and the Special meters at the bottom. I thought the Special meters might be from that Sailor Moon fighting game since they are a bit feminine, but that doesn't seem to be the case haha.

Well that's not too bad, only three missing!

You didn't recognise Darkstalkers, World Heroes and Elfmania. :)

May Quiz - handheld gaming

Two weeks ago the Nintendo Game Boy turned 30 years old, and to honor its legacy this round is dedicated to games for handheld consoles - but only on devices 100% made for video games, mobile phones are excluded.

Of course this topic means that Nintendos many handhelds are heavily covered, but I kept a balance: One half of this quiz is for games where Big N didn't supply the hardware.

After the round for MS-DOS classics this month might not be as easy, as a few obscure titles made their way into the lower half of the picture... but I am confident you can do it.

Well then, hope you brought enough batteries or an AC adapter to charge on the go? :p

Deadline is Friday the 31st of May, please participate via http://www.retrogamequiz.com/

here is the quiz, good luck!

Heh, submitted some answers but I am a bit frustrated as I know I've seen the figure in 8 somewhere...
Also, I'll wait for some clues for the ones going from 20 to 25...

Thanks for taking the time for doing this :)

May Quiz - Clues #1

I hope your battery still lasts a bit, this month is at best half over - more than enough time to join the 35 contestants (four from here) that already submitted their first round of anwers.
In regards to points all doors are still open, the top 10 already starts at sixteen correct answers... maybe these clues will help:

1) Twelve games for Nintendo platforms, three each for Sega and Atari, plus six for Sony. A single title remains a mystery for now. ;)
2) For the companies named above, the rule is "three quiz entries per console" (pre-advance Game Boys count as one though)
3) Number 8 & 9 were launch titles.
4) Number 1 is said to be the best game for that console.
5) the games 11 & 17 are turnbased RPGs.

That's it, let's go!

Deadline is Friday the 31st of May, participate via http://www.retrogamequiz.com/

May Quiz - Clues #2

A total of fifty people already joined, six from here - how about you? There now is less than a week to be part of the "30 years of gameboy" handheld quiz. Come on, here are the last clues:

1) The 2, 14 and 17 are games for the Sega Game Gear.
2) Game 18 is a shooting-heavy action game with prerendered backgrounds.
3) Title number 12 is by Square Enix.
4) 21 is a comic license game.
5) A single game this round was released on the Bandai Wonderswan.

Deadline is Friday the 31st May, please participate via http://www.retrogamequiz.com/

Finally got my answers in this month. Answered more than last time, but missed quite a few.
I'm sure number 8 is super obvious, but I just can't get it (dont want to just blind google for it either).

Not my worst showing! I knew the last one was a Wonderswan game before it was revealed but I just couldn't figure out which it was! I got all of the Lynx games correct at least. Not sure what it says that I recognized them all on sight.

Yeah that's not easy - it's an old and obscure handheld and none of the games are well known (that's why they are all in the lower rows), so good job. I never played with an Atari Lynx, did you?

I own a Lynx but I bought it within the last decade, so I never saw it during its heyday. It's got some neat games on it for sure though.

June Quiz - Role Playing Games

You enter the dungeon. Your party consists of a mage in long robes, a female barbarian in a chainmail bikini, a dwarf with an axe as big as his belly and a rogue with cape and dagger. After defeating countless monsters in the torch-lit (fluorescent mushrooms are also an option) corridors, you reach the legendary treasure room - only a massive iron gate is between you and incredible riches!

But whats this? The mage deciphers the old runes - solve the riddle, or may the gate remain closed forevermore... A riddle?? 25 video games?! WTF?!?

The mage rolls for intelligence, the thief examines the gate, while the dwarf lights a bonfire. At least you brought lots of food - rations for three weeks!

Can you solve the riddle? There's even a bonus question for an extra point...

Deadline is Sunday the 30th of June, so you got exactly three weeks.

June Quiz - Clues #1

Again and again your party rolls for Intelligence and Wisdom, but so far you still haven't found out all games. Truly not an easy task for the so far 30 participants (three from here).

But searching the room reveals further ancient runes... what's that? Clues?! °_° Well here we go!

1) Slightly more than half of the games are western RPGs.
2) Almost all games are part of a series.
3) Four games in this quiz have (also) been released on the Commodore Amiga.
4) Number 6, 12 and 16 can only be played on Nintendo consoles.
5) In the first versions of title 25 the player character still looked like this: @

June Quiz - Clues #2

We have a first breakthrough - this week all games were guessed correctly. But still, we'd need to add all your entrys together to have it all, as still no one has achieved full points (25 + bonus point). With eleven correct answers on average it is a surprisingly difficult round, maybe even the hardest riddle of the year so far.

Will our team of adventurers still make it to the treasure? Almost 40 people are in so far (four from here), don't give up now!

Here are the last clues... you still have one week. :)

1) Game 1 is several years old, but will be released on Switch just this year.
2) For the third title a third entry of the series was announced a few weeks ago.
3) Picture 20 shows you a fragment of the title screen.
4) Game 23 was made by a German team and was released in the late 90s.
5) Title number 8 is an RPG and part of a series, but all other entries are NOT role playing games.

Deadline is Sunday the 30th of June, please participate via http://www.retrogamequiz.com/

An Action-RPG from the end times of the Commodore Amiga, simple gameplay and rough graphics. The hardest title of this round, just eight people got it right. Here some gameplay: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-05s0UaMxoU&feature=youtu.be&t=593

other suggestions: Arc Fatalis, Das Schwarze Auge, Kings Field, Realms of Arkania: Shadows over Riva, Shadow Madness, Tales from Heaven

24) Persona 4
I never played Shin Megami Tensei, so I realised way too late that Persona is actually a spin-off of number 14. So there should have been a different game here.

other suggestions: Shuffle Time, Slenderman

25) Rogue
An entire Genre named after this game. ;) I made sure to give the clue player character is usually an "@"... but still, only 14 people recognised this home computer port with its improved graphics.

other suggestions: Dungeon, Dwarf Fortress, Nethack, ZZT

Bonus Question

The correct answer is WEST and EAST RPGs taking turns, for all even numbers are JRPGs, while all odd numbers are from western developers.

other suggestions: All part of a series, all sequels, all crap games, first person perspective, one game per alphabet letter, game world at war, all RPGs, declining sales

15, happy with that - though I really need to be less conservative with guessing rather than leaving blanks as I could have got a couple more!

Thanks as always for running this, Mr_Horizon! As a minor note, you have 6 and 8 swapped in the solution image.

Thanks, fixed the 6 & 8. And yes, it doesn't hurt to guess. :)
