In an America not yet fully governed by law, opportunity abounds for the lawless - wild open space ready and waiting for the ruthless and ambitious to carve a new future for themselves. How better to make your fortune than to become a black-market Moonshiner, the all-new Frontier Pursuit coming to Red Dead Online on December 13th. Establish your own bootlegging business in this new Specialist Role – an ideal fit for players progressing along the Trader path or anyone seeking a property to call their own. Unlock unique role-specific skills as you perfect your distillation methods, avoid the law, and put rival peddlers out of business. If you're lucky, you might survive long enough to open your own speakeasy.

Any active Trader who has completed a sell mission or reached Rank 5 in the Trader progression will receive an introduction via Cripps to meet the infamous Maggie Fike - an experienced bootlegger with the scars to prove it - down at Emerald Ranch. Maggie's got the connections and the knowledge to help you get your business up and running.

Purchase a Moonshining Shack and you will be on your way. To passers-by, the Shack is an unassuming dwelling, the main floor acting as a front with all the details of an ordinary homestead. The basement, however, is where you'll ultimately get down to business.

Owning and operating the Moonshine business is just part of your role. You'll also work with Maggie through a series of story missions to be played solo or cooperatively as you help her get revenge on those who tried to take her down. As you grow the business (and eliminate a rival operation), you'll learn new recipes and techniques that help make your moonshine the best by a country mile. You'll also have the opportunity to set up your own underground Bar serving your own shine, with customizable décor and the option to add a country band complete with dance floor to entertain your friends and clientele.

Look for much more to come to Red Dead Online alongside Moonshiners on December 13th - including Outlaw Pass No. 2, new Moonshiner role unlocks, the new Navy Revolver, additional clothing options and an increase in the amount of outfit slots in your Wardrobe.

How even is red dead online? I tried the beta and was bored early on and didn't bother turning it back on after hearing all the negatives. Is it better now?

Oh, man. This sounds awesome. I've nearly completed all of the current roles so this is coming just in time. Can't wait to open my own bar! I love the role playing aspect of this game so much.

I bounced off the beta pretty hard, but I'm now enjoying it rather a lot. Defensive mode does its job and is a much better implementation of such a system than GTAO's passive mode, and the roles (three already in the game) both make sure you have interesting stuff to do and makes it a lot easier to get money and ranks.

So is this Moonshiner stuff to be considered a trader "subclass" or does it just happen to have trader prereqs?

Waaay better. They added a bunch of more missions and modes, three player roles to choose from, trader, collector and bounty hunter. Each with their own set of unlocks. Also added better items through player level unlocks with even more unlocks with the purchase of the Outlaw Pass. Money and Gold payouts are also way better with the ability to add multipiers to your gold payouts by completing daily objectives.

Best of all, the ability to go into defensive mode so you can just go about your business, making it really difficult for assholes to grief you. While in passive players cannot lock on to your character. You can take way more damage and you vanish from the radar after a short distance. Though if you decide to be an asshole yourself while in passive it will instantly take you out of passive. Its a great system.

From what they have said in the past, the three original roles are sort of like foundations that future roles with branch off from.

So how is red dead online? I played it when it was still in the beta. The auto aim killed it for me. Is that removed? How is it as a co-op experience?

After GTAO, RDRO felt like a massive disappointment, all the changes they made to fuck you up turned me off hard. Shame because I was ready to spend another thousand hours and treat it like I did GTAO.

Red Dead Online > GTA Online by a country mile.
It's true.

Well, I guess it depends on the way someone wants to play. GTA Online is a trolls paradise. They actually made it difficult to grief innocent players in RDO (if those players knows about the defensive mode). I actually have been yelled at in-game by a couple of douchebags for explaining to a random player how to activate defensive mode. lol.

But then again some people just aren't into the setting. Preferring more modern stuff with GTA. I dig both. But I'm all in with RDO because its just way more easy to play. I would love for GTA Online to implement a similar defensive mode.

A big thing about Red Dead Online that they still need to fix is their servers. To this day there are random disconnects while playing.

That's awesome. I was feeling a bit discouraged about RDO after hearing it doesn't have a solo or invite only mode like GTAO, but this sounds really promising. Thinking I'll try getting into bounty hunting when I pick up the game this weekend, then trading later on down the line.

The good news for Bounty Hunting is that last week they added all 10 legendary bounty targets selectable from bounty boards. Previously, we got one legendary bounty a week after that last big update.

A thing to keep in mind for new players too....save your gold for this update. Previous roles cost 15 gold each. (Some were made free after linking Social Club account to Twitch or collecting items in GTA Online) . With the last Outlaw Pass costing 35 Gold.

Yeah it's better. It will probably need another 1 or 2 years of updates before it really gets going. But I enjoyed the last update and will enjoy this one.

Good timing, I just started playing RDO last night after picking it up in the black friday sale and love it so far. Haven't even touched the single player yet, I had a buddy talk me into getting the game and have been doing co-op with him. Lots of fun, I am kind of surprised it doesn't seem to be more popular.

A while back I heard about them improving the responsiveness of the controls, are they any better? I don't feel like redownloading the entire game to find out.

Red Dead Online is, surprisingly, pretty damn good. If you hate GTA Online,w hich I do, then you might like Red Dead Online. There's almost no griefing, the community is really friendly for the most part, people really love playing roles in the game and assisting each other. Sure, you run into occassional ne'er-do-wells, but the game makes it very easy to go into 'Defensive' mode which makes it difficult to grief someone, and it's very easy to gallop away from a griefer if you do run into one.

THere's a lot of PvE content, from good storyline missions to generic task-driven stuff, and the Roles they introduced are a lot of fun for the most part. If you really like the ambient side stuff in Red Dead games like hunting and collecting, the roles play right into that, wqith a more actioney bounty hunting role as well.

Free roam events are decent enough and get better as you get into the roles.

It's not without bugs, but for the most part, waaaay less buggy than GTA Online even years into it's launch.

I fucking *hate* GTA Online, I think it's one of the most poorly designed games I've ever played, but I genuinely like RD Online. I'm not as into it as I was a month or two ago, where I was playing it almost every day or for hours late at night on the weekends, but it's still good and I still enjoy playing it. Right now the game has a good sweet spot for new players, it probably gets good when you're like ~5 hours into it and you strt to figure out the gameplay hooks, and if you do the roles stuff there's a lot of fun to be had in it. The game gives you good rewards now too, both with the basic game currency and the MTX currency ("Gold"). I've got more gold and cash than I know what to do with in the game, legit, and I'm not even an avid player. The stuff I enjoy doing, like hunting and ambient side quests, are also things that the game pays out a lot on which is fortunate for me... It's some of the stuff I like best about Red Dead 1 & 2.

For anyone jumping in, we've got a pretty active community thread:

A while back I heard about them improving the responsiveness of the controls, are they any better? I don't feel like redownloading the entire game to find out.

Not really. They said they improved them, and there are small improvements (they sped up a lot of animations like looting bodies, skinning animals, picking flowers, etc), and there's some nominal improvements to the responsiveness of the controls, but if you don't like RDR2 because of the sluggishness of the controls, you probably won't notice much of an improvement at all. It's still a sluggish to control game. People who play the game a lot will say "omg it's night and day between the changes!" but a lapsed player probably wouldn't even notice they changed anything.

That's awesome. I was feeling a bit discouraged about RDO after hearing it doesn't have a solo or invite only mode like GTAO, but this sounds really promising. Thinking I'll try getting into bounty hunting when I pick up the game this weekend, then trading later on down the line.

YEah, genuinely, I never run into griefers. Infact, I regularly run into players who are there to help you, do good, or just ride side by side for a while, and almost never get griefed. THe game is also designed to help you identify potential griefers and it's really easy to avoid them too... Unlike GTA where a griefer can roll in an armored super car with a machine gun mounted on it or jump into a M16 jet and follow you around the map endlessly killing you, in RDR... everybody is on a horse and you can really only go so fast. It's easy to lose players who might be tailing you to grief you.

The places where you may run into hostility are obvious places: The center of Valentine or the alleys around Saint Denis, but even then, it's easy to avoid trouble makers there or go into defensive mode which makes it a lot harder.

Still the most fun I ever had in the game is when I started out and I spawned near this large posse... I totally expected them to grief me... tie me up, drag me to a train and kill me and grief me for the whole time I was in the server, but instead, they took me under their wing and let me ride with them for the night doing a ton of high level missions.. I even fucked up one of their bounties, killing the target by accident, and they were so cool about it like "oh.... that sucks... but w/e... be careful..."

now I just ride around doing good, donating 3-star animal pelts to people, helping them when getting attacked doing delivery missions, etc., once stumbled upon a person tied up on some train tracks (a victim of a griefer obviously) and their horse downed on the tracks too... I untied them, revived the horse, and rode off into the distance, my job done of the day.

Nice. So sounds like putting the first 15 gold bars I obtain into the bounty hunter role would be a good initial investment? Or would it be worth it to invest in the outlaw pass?

Of course I did, that's why I prefer GTAO by a mile. I disagree hard that RDRO is better, starting by the simple fact of having a premium currency, which is bullshit. "But you can grind cents of them if you do x,y,z" fuck that, it's still a premium currency over the regular one.

Red Dead Online > GTA Online by a country mile.

Nah, too many trolls played RDRO when I tried it. Defensive mode is not a fix for morons that want to troll you. I can just chill solo while playing GTAO without ever having to deal with idiots, RDRO removed because the griefing helps them earn more money (like it did with GTAO too, but back then they at least gave people the choice to be alone).

The best investment for new players is the Collector Role. It makes you a ton of money once you unlock the metaldetector. I'd go for that, than Bounty Hunter for fun and Trader (kind of a slog to level) right at the end.

Bounty Hunter is by far the worst money maker. The best early investment would be Collector - it's a bit of a pain at first to level up, but once you unlock the metal detector you can (if you want) just look up the best "routes" that people have made, pull out the detector and go ride.

With the detector + shovel and a couple hours of following the map, you can earn a good $2-3k selling the full sets of collectibles.

If you link your Social Club account with a Twitch account you will actually get the Bounty Hunter License for free. Save some gold. Collector and Trader is actually where the money is at. Trader is a slow build.

But once you unlock the metal detector for the Collector from Madam Nazar you will make bank. Especially using this incredible community made map...

Then why are you talking nonsense? When you go in Defensive mode others can't do too much to you. And even without that Red dead Online community is way better. Vast majority of players just leave you alone.

Good for you that you had luck in your sessions.

Not really. If somebody kills you two or more times you can just pick Parley and essentially never be bothered by that person again.

What, I need to post a screenshot of the game open?

Completely disagree with GTA Online being better solo in passive mode. The passive mode in that end up locking you out of a bunch of content. And you will still appear anywhere on the map to be targeted by griefers if they wanted.

Woo hoo, very exciting!

Have all the other roles maxed out so this will be fun new content. Looking forward to a new outlaw pass as well. Hopefully they won't change how quickly it levels.

Also, heads up, permanent posses are on sale so now's a good time for form one.

I actually found a way around the camp glitch recently. Seems if you are having trouble with your camp spawning it's due to having too many players in your session. If you go to a bounty board and choose a bounty, it should seamlessly instance you into your own lobby. You can then spawn your camp pretty easily. Also animals in the world appear as they should.

Thanks for the tip, guys. Gonna be hard to heed your advice since bounty hunting sounds the most fun, but that collector map is making that option look pretty manageable.

Gonna have to start looking into efficient ways to grind for gold without spending real money.

Yeah, Bounty Hunter is definitely the most fun if you're into that kind of thing, especially if you have people to play with for the bigger bounties later on.

Trader is my personal favorite - of the 300 or 400 hours I've spent on RDO so far, a good 80% have been just hunting, so it just easily worked out.

Collector is by far the most game-y-est one, but also the most lucrative.

My advice for starting out is to just play the game and be sure to do at least one daily challenge a day. Every consecutive day adds to a weekly multiplier. Each consecutive week increases that multiplier.

You also get a little gold from doing just about any activity, be it missions or PVP gametypes. You also get rewarded treasure maps every 5 lvls your character increases. Those maps can also be found around the world or looted from enemies.

There is alot of stuff in the game now. It can be overwhelming. My advice would be to complete the main story missions and pick 1 or 2 roles.

It changed sooo much since launch! It's wonderful, try it out.

They actually removed a lot of the more elaborate animations (looting bodies), so I think that part is worse than it used to be.
