Not really out of nowhere though.

Yes. There it is. Go watch it.Parasite. It is an amazing movie, and takes a sudden dark turn.
Then please allow me to jog your memory. This was apparently my favorite #1 movie for a couple years as a very young child.
I do not remember it.
"Mother", but that one is more or less dark from the get go. Amazing movie btw.Wasn't there also that one movie a mother tries to prove her sons innocence discovers he's guilty then murders people to cover it up?
I find myself wanting to object to saying that movie took a dark turn. I guess it's more like a surreal dark comedic turn. It's just one of those movies that you expect to go one of several directions and then it goes to another place entirely.
I'll never understand how people were blindsided by Bridge to Terabithia. Did none of you have to read that in school? It was part of my school's fourth grade curriculum.
Also Infinity War. I know that anyone following the film production or with a knowledge of comics would know that it was not the end, but I knew so many people who thought it was going to be the grand finale that endgame turned out to be. Iknow so many people who o were super excitd about the culmination of 10 years of movies and seeing the story end....and all I could think was "my poor sweet summer child"

Executive Decision , the first 15 minutes of the movie had me like WTF when I was a kid.
Not just you lol. Old Steven Seagal did not like it one bit either.
Yeah I heard they had threatened to sue him if he didn't film it.
Didn't Kirby just randomly have a panic attack and spontaneously start choking on his own cord at one point? The Brave Little Toaster.
One moment all the appliances will be singing happy songs across a picturesque countryside, the next they're either having nightmares about killer clowns or trying to escape humans (or even other machines) trying to scrap them. The frequency and intensity of mood whiplash in that film is absolutely insane.
Came here to say this.
This is my go-to answer when this thread gets made. A light-hearted road movie about two mismatched people. Hey, look, here's Ray Liotta! Oh...Something Wild
A whimsical comedy turns dark. It may be my fav from Demme.
Happiness starts kind of dark but with a weird dry whimsy. A little stranger than most 90s indie comedies but not too weird. It's dark, but it's not as fucking bone chillingly bleak as it becomes.
Then the father starts jerking off to a teen boy band magazine in the backseat. Then he rapes one of his son's friends. It really only gets darker from there.
