I would say Kill List. It starts off dark because it's about a hit man but I was not prepared for how dark and fucked up it was gonna get by the end.

Amazing movie though. One of my favorites.

Also, the movie Super with Rainn Wilson. That shit got real dark.

The Brave Little Toaster.

One moment all the appliances will be singing happy songs across a picturesque countryside, the next they're either having nightmares about killer clowns or trying to escape humans (or even other machines) trying to scrap them. The frequency and intensity of mood whiplash in that film is absolutely insane.

Bicentennial Man.

It was marketed as "Fun light hearted family comedy with robin williams as a robot who learns to feel."

And for the first half of the film it is. Then it takes a hard turn to the 'time destroys all and you should be grateful' side of things.

Also Infinity War. I know that anyone following the film production or with a knowledge of comics would know that it was not the end, but I knew so many people who thought it was going to be the grand finale that endgame turned out to be. Iknow so many people who o were super excitd about the culmination of 10 years of movies and seeing the story end....and all I could think was "my poor sweet summer child"

I doubt this will come up but I feel a similar way with Empire. Basically the movie ends with the good guys losing and barely escaping, and if there was no part 3 (or 6) it would be pretty depressing.

Also, not really out of nowhere, but the trailer for Dark Shadows made the movie look like the regular gothic dark comedy Tim Burton is know for. Well, more or less all jokes where in the trailer and overall the movie was actually rather dark and serious. I liked the movie.

Boogie Nights is all 70s porno disco cocaine fun and games until Little Bill decides he's had enough. Then the whole movie just gets monstrously dark and mostly stays there.

Oh yeah another one is Swiss Army-man. Comes off as a pretty wacky finding yourself comedy and then gets really dark as you start to piece things together.

Happy Feet

It takes a really strange turn, though maybe not necessarily dark, but I worked at a theater where we played this and people would leave the theater baffled, haha.

This Japanese movie called Himeanole. Unfortunately the shift makes the movie bad, but hey.
it starts as a weird mumblecore sort of romcom. Then halfway through the most insane title drop in cinema happens and it instantly turns horror as we shift to a minor character who turns out to be a stalker/serial killer! cue a bunch of nihilistic very bad no good acts

There's also the Korean movie My Ordinary Love Story which has a similar thing going on, but has the radical idea of still being fun even when things get dark
girl is convinced her boyfriend is cheating on her and goes on a bunch of wacky hijinks to prove it. Turns out oops! he's a murderer!

Coherence.
I saw it with little info about it and it just seemed a story of a group of friends having dinner, until all that shit starts happening and you are equally confused as the characters (or more).

I went into Overlord dark, and for like the first 30 mins, it was a pretty great straight shooter war movie. Then it gets really fucked up.

Didn't Kirby just randomly have a panic attack and spontaneously start choking on his own cord at one point?

That movie is fucked up.

Something Wild

A whimsical comedy turns dark. It may be my fav from Demme.
This is my go-to answer when this thread gets made. A light-hearted road movie about two mismatched people. Hey, look, here's Ray Liotta! Oh...

Great soundtrack, too, as is always the case with a Demme film.

The Last American Virgin has a gut-punch ending. Hey, I don't want real feelings and consequences in my '80s raunchy teen comedy!

Happiness starts kind of dark but with a weird dry whimsy. A little stranger than most 90s indie comedies but not too weird. It's dark, but it's not as fucking bone chillingly bleak as it becomes.

Then the father starts jerking off to a teen boy band magazine in the backseat. Then he rapes one of his son's friends. It really only gets darker from there.

Great choice, I hadn't seen Welcome to the Dollhouse and if I remember correctly the trailer didn't give any indication of what was to come. It was genuinely shocking to me.

doesn't apply to all his movies but scorsese is the master of "enjoying the movie? great. now here's where i kick you in the balls...."
