My Facebook newsfeed is basically a ghost town. Anyone else?

I'm 28. I opened a Facebook account in 2007. From around then until 2015ish my newsfeed contained frequent status updates and photos from various people (I have around 1000 friends on FB for reference). Now outside of brand posts from pages that I've liked there's almost none of that outside of a small handful of people. I don't use the site much anymore either, but check it every now and then and this realization slowly dawned on me. Out of curiosity, I was clicking on a few acquaintances' profiles and most of had maybe uploaded a picture or 2 in 2019, and some none at all. It's an interesting trend to me that my Facebook feed went from very active in high school and college to almost inactive.

Is Facebook done by and large or am I just in a bubble? For the record Instagram seems to still be quite active amongst people I know irl.

No one really used facebook anymore from my circle apart from posting lame memes ot just keeping track of pages they follow. Many have deactivated it.

If it wasnt for instagram you would already be hearing about their downfall.

I'm experiencing the same. The news feed is full of brands and older people in the family. A lot of people still use Messenger though.

Mine is still plenty active. Though I mostly just use Facebook for groups these days.

I was in school when Facebook began, so I first got a profile in 2004 when it still had The in the name. My facebook feed is all but dead. There are still photo posts, but I'm pretty sure they are mostly instagram cross-posts.

Facebook for me is now a glorified events calendar. Wish I could find an alternative so I could just get rid of the thing.

I'm part of a few Fortnite groups and there are tonnes of kids there, I guess they could just be using it for this aspect.

It's mostly distant relatives posting their Pro-Trump memes. (How am I related to these awful people? Ugh...)

Been that way for years in the UK. As a 26 year old, it's considered extremely lame by most of my peers to post on Facebook now for anything that isn't major, like a marriage proposal.

I have a Facebook ID under a million (go me!) and I haven't posted in years. I haven't visited in at least six months. My feed was mostly brands posting anyway.

Older people took over and ads/other bullshit killed Facebook. Zuck must be happy with the ad money, but he lost the people that actually use the platform.

I still have it for contact reasons and messenger, but I haven't posted anything since like 2018ish.

The fake news/politics etc. totally and completely ruined the experience for me.

Yup basically dead. But everyone's moved to WhatsApp and Instagram so doubt Mark is crying too much about it.

Mine is incredibly active. There are a ton of Facebook groups that are in the crossroad between Reddit and old forums. Lots of stuff about programming, music, shows, games... and lots and lots of dank memes. I tuned my Facebook so that groups are what it's all about. There's a "Reddit for not elitist people" flair to it that feels pretty good and fresh. Nothing from the close friends anymore and I agree with :

Although it's still the best tool to stalk your old school bullies and feel good about it.

I purged my Facebook friends down to 70 friends that I actually care about, then further unfollowed about half of the active ones due to them mostly just posting links to news articles, memes, etc.. So I get maybe three or four posts a day in my News Feed, mostly from the same four or five people.

I don't "Like" anything, and I use F.B.Purity to filter out ads, sponsored posts, suggested friends, people you may know, and all that other bullshit.

My Facebook is super minimal, and that's the way I like it.

I'm still thinking of closing my account due to how Facebook keeps attention seeking with "You have a new friend suggestion" notification bullshit that I can't seem to get rid of.

Part of it is the algorithm. There's tons of posts that will never be shown to you on your news feed because Facebook has deemed that you don't usually engage with that person or whatever.

But in general I would agree that it seems most of the younger generation seem to be gravitating towards other things and Facebook mostly seems to be parents and brands.

I only use it for Warhammer groups because that's where a lot of old forum users went, but Instagram seems a more popular place to post photos of your miniatures with a much higher level of engagement.

I mostly use it as a calender app at this point. Organising parties and birthdays and concerts. People are more active on Instagram and the memes are better on twitter. If I want to shoot the shit I do here anonymously or in a group chat in messenger so gran doesn't start talking about the great replacement in my mentions.

Buried the facebook casket early last year and don't miss it a bit. Slowly coming towards deleting twitter and Instagram but my area of work means i have to keep in the loop with social media...which sucks

Everyone I know is basically active on Instagram. I deleted(Not deactivate) my Facebook account in 2016. The only social media account I am very active on is Twitter. I'm having a blast there. Thanks to the horror film community.

It's dropped a lot of most people I know use Snapchat as their main social media app these days.

Probably shut down my account soon as it's mainly just older people posting inspirational posters or slightly off-colour 'funny' pictures!

Mine is still pretty active. I actually use the messenger a lot. How many friends do you have op?

I’m mostly on instagram now and my friends are pretty much the same. Everyone I know pretty much bypassed twitter too.

Yeah, it’s a dearth of actual social interaction. More brands and random pages posting crap that shows up now. My mum posting Britain First memes as she is slowly radicalised. It’s great!

Yeah, the boomers have took over Facebook. Since several years ago, the ones who added me on FB were my aunts, uncles, and other families. I still use FB but only to follow certain pages of my hobbies, from gaming to anime and football. I just don't post there anymore.

I'm more active on Instagram nowadays, but I only post stories. I have simply stopped leaving digital traces since a couple of years ago.

everything is groups now, honestly. and it works on facebook because there's still a billion users so there will be a group for whatever stupid niche thing you're interested in.

but yes, the only ppl using it are 99% older family and my old high school/university friends who are similarly older millenials.

everyone young is on other social media for sure

I stopped looking at the feed long before quitting facebook entirely. No posts from contacts, just "X liked this", "Y began following Z", and sharing links to news articles (99% of them being about an orange tinted person).

When one year ago I resurrected the account to access the groups for online university, the feed was like one of those movie scenes where a solitary tumbleweed rolls in a desert.

I erased my account completely this summer. It was at least 3-4 years since I use it to socially link with someone. Now Linkedin, Twitter and Whatsapp do the same job.

Yep similar experience. It seems there is very little actual engagement on Facebook. I really only use the messenger.

I’m 35, almost every one I know still has Facebook. Including teenagers I know from skateboarding at my local park. Almost all of my social circle posts at least once a day on there, and 99% of my family is on it.

10 years ago my feed was mostly filled with lots of facebook friends posting nonsense, nowadays it is just a few people posting family photos and advice.

Interestingly, I notice my facebook friends have a lot more activity in public post comments and groups rather than their own feeds. People are more than happy to comment on other friend's comments and/or public page comments but don't ever share anything on their own.

I'd have quit facebook a long time ago and only stick to FB messenger to stay in touch with acquaintances but my basketball and baseball clubs use facebook religiously to communicate with players and make announcements. Without facebook I'd be kept in the dark. Wish there was another better platform for them to jump ship to.

Yeah mine's virtually dead, just a few posts from 2-3 people, and the same old regurgitated crap and adverts cycling round. The newsfeed algorithm really shows its flaws when there's not enough data to work with. I mostly use Twitter now, I feel like I'm too old to really 'get' Instagram and Snapchat. (38)
