I've been seeing a lot of comments from people who declare one or two or three people are unfit to bring the party together and stand up to Trump but very few of these people actually touch on what they think is a strong candidate.
So I'm making this thread for us to drill down what we think works against Trump and the GOP.
This is not a thread to complain about who is and potentially is running come 2020.
Leave that for the threads specifically about those people.
Frankly I see more than 10 things are required and will cap myself on 20.

Personality
1. Always be willing to talk back to Trump
2. Mock Trump at every turn
3. Call out the deplorables while telling our base we have to carry them
4. Have enthusiasm for the technological upheaval
5. Be jubilant about how big and small groups people resisted Trump, even the conservatives.
Connections
6. Get the support of every union accept police unions
7. Get the support of struggling 6 figure earners
8. Get the support of social and environmental shareholder activists (don't confuse them with profit and expansion driven shareholder activists)
9. Get the support of the defense and intelligence industries
10. Chip away at Trump's ridiculously high appeal among Latinos.
11. They make a strong effort in red states not with the expectation of winning them but in ensuring the democrats and fence-sitters in these areas know they will be supported a year to a year and half later with grass root campaigns to fix some of their local politics.
Policy
12. They intend to disband the internment camps immediately.
13. They promise to End the trade war with the only expectation from the countries we targeted to also revert back to old trade rules.
14. They promise to End the tax breaks within the first year.
15. Offer to develop infrastructure in interstate communications, overseas transportation and economic financing through stage 1 form of Universal Basic Income.
16. Offer to develop a government agency that essentially creates a nationwide union that anyone can join. It will be highly focused on strengthening temps, contractors, interns and minimum wage staff.
17. Present a plan for aggressive expansion into the arctic and poorer countries exporting our expertise and extracting mutual value from these areas.
18. Promise to revamp libraries around the country to have annexes for 3D printing centers where people can collaborate and develop their own goods onsite more cheaply than buying from OEMs and ODMs.
19. Guide the country in developing drone technology for many applications and creating new standards on professional usage and flight paths across the country as well as setting standards for recreational.
20. Mandate that all public schools will include courses in financing+economics, rudimentary programming+engineering and a student overseas interaction program.

There are so many possible ways to approach this coming election but it would be useful to know if we can naturally form a consensus on this. I'm saving this space so I can every couple of days summarize the responses given into percentages.

I think the biggest thing is not to be afraid to verbally battle him, instead of taking the high ground.

5-10.

Policy won't matter at all, as long as the candidate didn't do the things Hillary got torn apart by on the left in 2016. The reason moderates voted for Trump over Hillary all boiled down to charisma. Nobody cares about policy at all unless they need to come up with reasons to dislike a person they already don't like.

You could have stopped at ten. I think the last election proved pretty definitively that policy doesn't matter.

You need to be popular, you need to suck the dicks of the white electorate, and you need to be willing to cheat and not give a fuck if you get caught doing it. That's it.

According to that Warren thread, apparently the most important trait is to not be a woman.

Popular in a swing state. That's all there is to it because of our electoral college voting system.

1. Able to get more votes than Trump
2-10. See #1.

Ain't none of you experts in political psychology. Hell after 2016, nobody is.

I think 2016 actually highlights my point that focusing on swing states is the way to go.

Realize for a second that Trump broke almost every single conventional rule for what was required to win the presidency back when he won. He was supposed to be finished after the Access Hollywood tape. He wasn't.

And now many of you think you somehow understand the political consciousness of the nation that just as easily voted for Barack Obama as Donald Trump?

Y'all arrogant as fuck if you think so.

Understand the issues of common people instead of trying to preserve the status-quo.
Just being against Trump is not going to be enough. If they havev't learned their lesson with Hillary, I'd argue they deserve to lose again.

Whoever gets nominated. Even Hillary would have won if she hadn't laughed off campaigning in the Rust Belt.

1. Has a damn message that can be as easy to understand as "Build the Wall".

You understand that the electoral map changes with time, right? This is like the dumbest fucking lesson that you can take away as the top, #1 headline for the election.

California used to be a solid Republican state, and it flipped to solid Democrat within most of our lifetimes.

If you really think that 2016 was lost purely on Hillary not campaigning in one of the smallest Battleground states that wouldn't have made the difference (Wisconsin), I don't know what to tell you. It's just stupid.

Whoever gets nominated. Even Hillary would have won if she hadn't laughed off campaigning in the Rust Belt.

She campaigned a shitload in Ohio, and still lost it, by a lot. She campaigned about as much in the Rust Belt as Trump did. We could start retconning Ohio and Pennsylvania to not count as the rust belt, though!

The same rural, low-education White wave is what won Trump the election. The same pattern is pretty glaring in Florida, Ohio, PA, NC, WI, MI, and states Hillary ended up winning like Virginia. Thinking that 2016 was lost on state minutiae is just wrong.

According to "progressives". The penis in question should also be white because you wouldn't wanna ruffle too many feathers after Obama. Really gotta go for that centrist vote!

Depends on what the goal is.

Do we just want a left-wing version of Trump who makes American politics look like a total circus?

Do we want a candidate that fits all of the left-wing criteria but loses anyway?

Do we want a wishy-washy centrist who will beat Trump but is more of the status quo?

Any time Trump states something as fact they should be able to quote Fox News saying the opposite.

Much like online dating there are 2 golden rules.

1. Be charismatic.
2. Don't be uncharismatic.

My ideal candidate:

1: does not use twitter at all and promises to not use Twitter in the future
2: does not engage with trump at all, does not go to the debates, does not directly acknowledge trump except when pointing out his lies and failures.
3: promises to undo everything trump has done, like trump did to obama
4: no slogan

1. Not be *the* recipient of the most thorough character assassination in modern American politics
2. Charisma.
3. Be able to sell an idea simply. You need a "yes we can," a "drill baby drill," or *retching* a "maga." This shit is marketing. The candidate is a product.
4. Do not debate Trump.
5. Do not let your running mate debate Pence.
6. Not have lost/conceded a previous Presidential primary. No Bernie, no Biden. And I voted for Bernie last time around, but this person needs to be free of a losing stigma.

I'm not even going to bother with policy here because to be honest, I don't believe it's going to matter.

You do realize this is a catch-22, right? A candidate who refuses to take part in the debates looks weak and cowardly. It also means they have one less opportunity to get their policy out there, because the media will of course go out of its way to give airtime to Fat Nazi and nobody else.
