House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has played down Democratic victories in districts such as her own and that of Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, fending off calls from some of the party's newer members and politicians to shift leftward.

Ocasio-Cortez, 29, a self-described democratic socialist, defeated 10-term incumbent Joe Crowley in a Democratic primary before winning New York's 14th District last November. She is the youngest woman ever elected to Congress and has become the face of a movement that's pushing for Democrats to adopt more "progressive" policies, such as free health care, free tuition and a higher minimum wage.

"When we won this election, it wasn't in districts like mine or Alexandria's. And she's a wonderful member of Congress, I think all of our colleagues will attest," Pelosi, a California Democrat, told an audience Monday night at a London School of Economics event during a U.K. visit.

"But those are districts that are solidly Democratic. This glass of water would win with a D next to its name in those districts," she said, picking up the water at her table.

"And not to diminish the exuberance, and the personality, and the rest of Alexandria and the other members...but the 43 districts—we won 43, net gain of 40—were right down the middle. mainstream, hold-the-center victories.

She continued: "What we're saying is to have a message that appeals to people that does not menace them, that really does address their concerns. When we win, and we have the White House, and we have that, then we can expand our exuberances to some other things.

"But our message, our progressive message, is down the middle."

Pelosi said a strongly left-wing message such as that of Ocasio Cortez "works great in my district, I get over 80 percent in my district, these folks do as well, but that's not where we have to win the election."

You cannot be progressive going down the middle. And winning elections is important, but what we do while in power is also important.

I mean, she's not wrong. San Francisco, for example, would vote in a Mission style burrito over anyone with an R next to their name.

That title's a little misleading though. She was also implying a glass of water could win in HER district as well not just AOC's. She wasn't signaling her out.

No lies detected tbh. I wish the party could be more left and more progressive, but there's also a need to take the temperature in the room and win elections because, as we've seen time and time again, the alternative is an absolute nightmare.

If moderate Dems are shaking in their boots so much, why did they not run someone against AOC?

Yeah, we need down-the-middle exuberance for things that matter to middle America like... healthcare and corporate accountability.

Oh wait that's pretty much all AOC's been doing, but Nancy also called it "socialism" and says we're not socialists.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

It's true. The left needs to change that. Some of the most bought off dems come out of these districts. So the primary needs to become a credible threat.

I mean if you're talking the main election and not the primaries she's not really wrong, republicans had no chance of winning the actual seat. At the same time though downplaying the primary victory seems really disingenuous here

Didn't AOC beat another Democrat to win her district? I'm not sure Pelosi's argument makes any sense.

She is right. The districts that allowed us to win the house are not solidly D and we cant elected 217 AOCs

That's obviously not the point. Whoever won that primary was going to win that district easily.

I think Pelosis handling of the Omar stuff has mostly been terrible but you are doing right wingers work getting worked up over this

If you watch the video, she talks about herself first, then AOC and Democrats in general winning in districts that Democrats should win in.

This is just clickbait nonsense being used by right-wing talk show hosts to stir up drama.

I don't see a problem with what she is saying. People are assuming that she is taking a dig at AOC, but says the same thing about her district.

A glass of water might be able to, but Joe Crowley sure didn't. I think the establishment is shook that they risk being primaried by young determined progressives who actually want to see progress instead of constant compromises where Dems capitulate to Republicans.

I mean the arguement here is that Democrats would lose ground on a national scale if they only ran candidates like Cortez regardless of the actual state of local politics in any given district which is why she's saying they have to take a more centrist approach overall

It's absolutely brilliant how Pelosi plays Republicans and Progressives alike.

She really is fucking amazing.

Why would center America care about banks, it's not like the '08 crash destroyed them and most of its instigators got off scott free.

So do you think AOC could win in R+10 districts?

AOC specifically? Probably not. Someone with AOC's aggressive corporate accountability and reform platform whosw skin is melanin-deficient? Yeah, probably.

She's focusing on the 20 presidential election vs Trump, he has the incumbents advantage and we will have to get a fair number of people who voted for him to swing the other way.

Joe Crowley was able to do it 10 times though. The point was that no matter who became the democratic candidate, that person was going to beat the republicans in that district

The "Pelosi slights the left wing of her party" articles sure are getting a lot of clicks recently.
