In!
I have no idea what I will be writing but I'm focused on finishing the second draft for my current project right now and I'll worry about NaNo project after that. Thankfully it's the end of September and not October right now lol

The only one I know of is called Freewrite and it's pretty expensive so I have no experience with it.

Yeah I knew about that thing and low key kinda lust for it but man that's just too damn much money.

Still seems like an amazing NaNoWriMo buddy tho

I bought a used AlphaSmart Neo for $30 a couple years ago. It works great. Comfortable (non-mechanical) keyboard, several files for memory. You plug it into your PC/laptop and it literally emulates a keyboard and spits out your writing at a pretty good clip.

Recommended if you wanna go distraction-free on the cheap.

What makes someone a person?

If I copy myself to the internet am I still a person, an individual?
If I need a body, if I copy myself to some one elses body am I still a person or am I two of them?

If a mass murderer trades minds with an innocent person. Is the mind guilty of the crimes or the body?

If I copy my memories to an exact clone of myself am I still me?

Just my random thoughts on the way home from work today :P

Temptingggggg.

I haven't done it for a few years, but with two under my belt, I'd really love to get a third win.

Back again for another attempt. I think I have the habit control to actually do it this time. Gonna hit the outlining hard in October.

I've tried twice now, I think, and always fizzle out in the first week. But lately I've been thinking it'd be a fun project to try adapting an existing novel into a script, just to see if I can. Though considering I've never even tried writing a script, it's probably harder than I think, haha.

Probably against the rules, but whatever. I'll still try

I'm committing to this because I'm bad at sticking to my goals and I figure it may as well be a public thing.

Almost nothing is against the rules as long as you are writing something.

In.

Same as last year, not writing a novel or short story, just contributing words to various projects i'm working on. Best of luck everyone!

All right, I'm in again this year. Gonna start honing in on a plan in October. I've been waiting for this.

Is the NaNo website bugged for anyone? It keeps logging me out, and doesn't display some pages. I know they updated the site and the buddy info didn't carry over. Thankfully my past projects/wins carried over at least.

Yeah, it's buggy AF. it was like that in beta too...

There's only 2 people who work on the site and for the volume of what's going on I don't envy their workload :s

I think they're doing some big overhauls to the site thus why it's been very funky. Hopefully it'll be fine once we hit November proper :<

I'm gonna do it this year.

I kinda fell off doing NNWM for several reasons (like losing interest in writing, the site migration, doing Inktober's) but now I want to take writing seriously again. Don't think I'll be doing a novel though. I'm fully confident in my ability to push out 50K words, as I have won from 2013 to 2015. It's editing and staying interested in the 50K novels AFTER I've pushed them out that has been hard.

That's why I'm kinda eyeing the short story category. I kinda want to do five 10k-word short stories. It feels like it'd be much more manageable to edit / complete after NNWM. It also might be fun to try something writing in a new format. I was honestly phoning things in by the time I stopped completing NNWM's in 2016. Having to outline 5 different short stories could be a good change of pace.

Anyway, here's to hoping I can finally get back into completing NaNoWriMo (and also to finally having Inktober AND NaNoWriMo completed in the same year).

Thanks

I was supposed to do both last year but I completely underestimated October (thinking I could outline for NNWM as I did Inktober) and had no creative drive left when November hit. That's why I've been planning things earlier this year

My wife is trying to get me to do Inktober with her. I will try it, but my focus is definitely more on Nanowrimo. I got my first win last year and am going to try hard for my 2nd. It doesnt hurt that I am absolutely in love with my core concept for this year's novel.

That first win is always some of the best motivation for the second. What's your core concept?

I never share before I start writing ;)

Not that I think people will copy the idea or anything, it's purely superstition on my part.

Edit: I will say it's about a young girl that meets a witch and ends up as the witch's familiar. The witch gets captured and the girl needs to rescue her despite having no powers of her own. I really like playing with fantasy tropes so no "oh she can actually use magic" surprises. She's a normal girl in a dangerous magical world.

I'm in. I'm going to use a plot I've been cooking for a while but didn't want to do the research on. I've just decided it doesn't need to be historically accurate historical fiction.

Do you know if there's an Inktober 2019 thread or if there's one planned? Couldn't find one when searching.

I'm also planning to do both, going to ink and write some Afro-Asiatic-futurism concepts I've been dreaming about since middle school.

I almost always ask to be entered into these and almost without fail don't write anything at all. Until I was about 23 or so I had wanted to be a writer, I enjoyed it and participated in our regular prompts on the old site. But my creativity just seemed to sap from me as an adult, being constantly depressed, busy, unhappy with life. By the time I found my happiness it just never seemed to return to me.

After my wife passed away a few months ago a lot of my friends and family told me I should lean into my arts as an expression. I always enjoy playing guitar but writing takes so much more focus and creativity to me. I can't just strum on a keyboard to get started. And I think there's an idea of people going through tragic events suddenly being able to tap into this wealth of creativity and spin art from their sadness. I don't think that's necessarily true at all. Currently one of my issues is just how apathetic I can be, and just watching hours of my time disappear to doing literally nothing.

But I agree that I should try. And I haven't made things easy on me in many respects so far. But I'm packing my house away right now, moving back in with my mom and stepdad with my kid to get shit figured out, wait on life insurance coming in and finding a new path in life to provide for my kids future even though I'm disadvantaged by age and lack of education or experience.

And I should try to do this. I fail time and time again. I have absolutely no idea what to write about, if my experiences will shape it or just the act of writing as catharsis. I will nonetheless be busy with my daily life of being some kind of stay at home dad, helping my family with their respective businesses, and just generally the crippling depression and anxiety that I know will make me want to procrastinate. But I will try one more time.

Anyway that's a long way of saying I would like to participate this year.

I'm 0/2 right now.
Here we go again...
I will try once again.

Welcome aboard!!!

I'm sorry for your loss and while writing is a hard thing to get started with, I also thinks it's very rewarding once you get to the end of a book filled with all your chaotic feelings. There's a strange kind of peace there. Anyways, if you have time you should try reading Bird by Bird by Anne Lamott. Its a memoir/book of writing advice but I think the memoir part of these kinds of books are usually the best. She also went through a loss and talks a bit about how writing a book really helped her through it (and a bit about the therapeutic aspects of writing). Anyways I'm rooting for you!

I'll try. Last year I had to drop out due to various IRL problems and ongoing shoulder/arm pain. The latter issue is still there, but hopefully November as a whole will be a bit less hectic.

I don't know if one is planned but since 2014 (back on the old place) there's always been an Inktober Thread. So I assume there'll be a thread again. fwiw, the Inktober OT for last year went up on October 1.

Though if you really want confirmation, you could try asking Raging Spaniard. He always creates the OT's for Inktober

Anyways, good luck on tackling both Inktober and NaNoWriMo

Cant wait, going to get cracking with a plan next week as I am off work for a few days. The snowflake method seems fairly sensible so I am going to try that I think.

I (finally) finished a draft I'm ready to submit to agents. Is NaNoWriMo the absolute worst time to do this? I worry my manuscript will be lumped in with the...well, the schlock that can sometimes result during this time. Not trying to diminish anyone's hard work, just want to put myself in the best position to succeed.
