Hey there Era! Do you imagine Death Stranding will have the most convoluted story ever and think, "I can do that." Have you been planning the next great Japanese Light Novel in your head for the last few months? Do you need something to distract you from the blossoming sprouts of your seasonal depression? Are you just really inspired by this amazing poster? Then you might be interested in participating in National Novel Writing Month!!!

https://nanowrimo.org/

NaNoWriMo said:
What: Writing one 50,000-word novel from scratch in a month's time.

Who: You!

Why: The reasons are endless! To actively participate in one of our era's most enchanting art forms! To write without having to obsess over quality. To be able to make obscure references to passages from our novels at parties. To be able to mock real novelists who dawdle on and on, taking far longer than 30 days to produce their work.

When: Writing begins November 1. To be added to the official list of winners, you must reach the 50,000-word mark by November 30 at midnight.

Because of the limited writing window, the ONLY thing that matters in NaNoWriMo is output. It's all about quantity, not quality. The kamikaze approach forces you to lower your expectations, take risks, and write on the fly.

Make no mistake: You will be writing a lot of crap. And that's a good thing. By forcing yourself to write so intensely, you are giving yourself permission to make mistakes. To forgo the endless tweaking and editing and just create. To build without tearing down

FAQ
How do I write 50k words?
One word at a time. Seriously though, if you can keep up with the benchmark (1,667 a day) you're golden. If you can't, don't panic, just set aside a weekend day or days to play catchup. Or end the month with a manic spree of 10k days. Whatever works for you!

Any other strategies?
If you can, aim for 2000 a day rather than just keeping pace with the benchmark. This leaves you the elbow room for a few bad days later on in the month, which is a huge help for the week 2 and 3 doldrums. Also, try joining sprints and word wars on the NaNoWriMo forums or by following @NaNoWordSprints on the twitters.

How do I update my word count on Era?
Put a "WC" by your total word count. I have to manually edit the leaderboard so updates to it may be sporadic, but I'll try my best to keep it timely! If I accidentally forget to update yours, just send me a message. Cyan left me the nanobot code he used to automatically update the word counts, buuuuuut I'm bad at coding. I'll fiddle around with it and update this part if/when I figure out how to work it. Until then, this format will be fine

Is there any reason to actually sign up on the site itself?
Yes! First of all, you can have your novel officially validated by the site (copy/paste from your word processor into their word counter). This lets you officially win and gets you congratulations and all sorts of fame and glory. Second, by signing up, you will get "pep talk" emails each week from famous authors.

Does my story have to be an original work of genius?
No. It's whatever you want to write. It can be drab literary, roaring fantasy, self-insert fanfiction where you romance Bill Hader. You can write literally anything you want!

Can I/Do I have to share a synopsis or excerpts?
We'd love to see some of your work! While it's not required, please feel free to post excerpts of what you're working on at any time, or plot details, or character stuff, or whatever you want. For excerpts, shorter is usually better but feel free to post whatever you got.

Useful tools
Hangouts
Does it help you to have other writers around you, to pressure you to get some work done (And by other writers I mean me and Nezumi )? Join us for the ERA NaNo hangouts! These will happen every Sunday during NaNo, from 4-6 PM Eastern time. If there's sufficient interest, we can try and get a Saturday Hangout going too.

Hangouts will take place over the Writer's Era Discord server's hangout voice channel. Mics are recommended but you can type along with us in the general chat though be forwarned we are really bad at checking that.

The Writing Era discord server also has a Nanowrimo channel! There's a link hidden below!

Hidden content
You need to reply to this thread in order to see this content.
I will post reminders about the hangouts about half an hour before they start.

Software
Scrivener: a word processor that incorporates scene and character notes, outlines, research documents, and more. You can get a free trial, generally through December 7th, for NaNo. (And a discount on the full version if you win!)

Q10: an alternative word processor which removes all distractions, helping you focus on your work.

Write or Die: start writing in a text box. And don't stop... or else. Give it a try, very motivating. (also has a newer app version)

Plotting
Official NaNoWriMo Prep page: This page has a variety of useful excercises to help you flesh out your story whether it be the plot or characters. Try out some of their exercises!

No Plot? No Problem: a book by the site's founder, intended as an aid for completing your novel and getting through the month.

How to Outline During NaPloYoNoMo: Chuck Wendig sums up a bunch of different outlining methods.

Snowflake Method: a solid plotting method that helps you get from single-sentence summary to detailed outline. (You don't need the software, the whole method is described in full at the link.)

Adoptions: on the NaNo forums, it's traditional to leave some ideas that other people can pick up and run with. Adopt a plot, adopt a setting, adopt a title, and many more! (The link is currently unavailable since the NaNo forums are down but once we get closer, I imagine they will be back up and also my link.)

Sprints and Wordcounts
NaNo Sprints: start your engines! Get off to the races with some NaNo sprints, where you compete with other NaNoers to write a bunch of words in a short interval. This is a twitter page that posts sprints and various prompts to help your creativity roll. We also have a word sprint bot on the Writing Era Discord where when you type in the command it'll start a sprint right there and you can comepete with fellow Era users!

Backwards NaNo: a slightly different way of managing your word count. It's amortized! That means for the first two weeks, you're writing a lot more than everyone else. But by the last day, you only have to write a single word!

The poster Midramble has been generous enough to offer a bet where he'll give a ten dollar steam card to four winners if he himself wins. And if he loses, gonna give a ten dollar gift card to every winner. Check the threadmarks for his post and root for him regardless because we all want to win, right?

And, of course, this thread! Feel free to post questions here, or show us your awesome excerpts, or just complain about how hard writing a novel is! We're all in this together. Sweating together. Crying together. Popping aspirin cause our hands are cramping up together. That's what this thread is for!

I'm so in. This will be my best year for Nano ever, and would be a great way to end the 2010s with a novel I'm more passionate about than last year's one and most of them in general. I'm very pumped for this!

Era helped keep me on track last year, so I'm definitely in again this year.
Yay new thread smell

I guess I'm in.

I did the read the book a week challenge thing already this year so maybe this will finally be the year I finish this one!
In for another year. This will be my seventh year participating. I have won four times thus far.
So what are you all planning on writing about.

Does it involve Penguins rising up to strike down humanity. Since you know... they are all trained secret agents that are always in tuxes?

Or Or what about the story of the druid that wants to kill all living creatures because all he cares about is giving moss more space to grow on because moss is truly the most divine part of nature.

Or or Super Hero High School where the cool kids and the hot kids are always at war because you know... cool and hot clash temp wise :P

Hmm, it can only be a new novel? My patrons might get miffed if a take a month-long break, and I'm in the middle of finishing off some other projects, too.

The main goal is just to inspire people to write 50k words. If it's a new one that's fine, but most people don't care if you just continue a novel (or novels) you were working on as long as you log 50k new words.

I'm in. Didn't get to participate last year and did Camp twice this year (won the second one!) so I think I'm ready.

Just... not sure what I want to work on yet. I think I'll juggle a couple projects.

So what are you all planning on writing about.
I'm writing a collection of short stories about a little girl, half sheep and half wolf, who gets into wacky hijinks with her friends. I want to try something less heavy for this year, as the last three times I've done Nano they've been either romance melodrama or fantasy tragedy.

Then again, one of the stories involves her taking over the school hierarchy to set up a socialist commune, so I'm not sure it will be that light in terms of subject matter.

Hm... will this be the year that I write the spoof of isekai harem stories I chickened out of writing last year? Or maybe one of my cosmic horror stories aimed at children? Cold War era alien invasion story? Smut? Something else entirely?

I should probably refrain from officially entering until I've made up m mind. Still, I've won two years in a row now, so it would be a shame to not make it three.

If we can work on existing projects, I'll give it a shot. I don't know if I'll hit 50k, since I'm spending half my time editing, but it can't hurt to try.

I'm going to pass this year, but I'll be getting started on editing the novel I wrote over the past two NaNo's instead. Good luck to everyone going for it!

In!
I have no idea what I will be writing but I'm focused on finishing the second draft for my current project right now and I'll worry about NaNo project after that. Thankfully it's the end of September and not October right now lol

Does anyone have a good piece of dedicated writing hardware to recommend, like an e-ink one or something?

Laptops are amazing but...

...they have WiFi on them

The only one I know of is called Freewrite and it's pretty expensive so I have no experience with it.

I told myself I would participate this year, but I haven't even sat down at all this year and written anything more than a 100 words every few weeks.

Maybe this is the year I actually do something.

I'll sign up.

I don't own this but I know Mike does and loves it to bits. Certainly on the expensive side though.
I do love it. It's gotten numerous software updates since I bought it that have addressed a great many of my nit-picks with it. My chief remaining complaints are that it's detection of stylus strokes around the edges can be a bit off, the form factor is pretty beta-build looking, and (and this may be limited to just mine), the USB connection to upload the through a browser flat-out doesn't work.

I also use mine for editing rather than writing, but since my preference is to edit hard copies as opposed to a computer screen (I just catch more), this thing has been a godsend.

I wish I could actually commit to writing everyday. I think about participating every year but I always end up just slacking on the writing.
