God, imagining either Boston or Philly exiting Round 1 is crazy but it's likely to happen. One of those cities is gonna riot.

Damn I just saw the standings. Tbh I want Boston vs Sixers round 1 now lmao.

But more than likely Sixers will take that number 3 spot.

Celtics and Pacers have hard schedules coming up.

Sixers (and Bucks and Raptors) have a easier schedule coming up.

When you get a chance to get an all nba player like Tobias Harris, you do it at any cost. Lakers need to learn their lesson with PG13. He said if we had traded for him, he would currently be a Laker. We can't make that mistake again. We need to show Tobias that he is wanted. Anyways, Pelicans showed that the Lakers assets are trash. I would hardly consider Brandon Ingram and KCP as assets.

Agreed. Lakers should have traded those assets who aren't even considered assets for Tobias Harris because surely Jerry West and the Clippers would have traded Tobias Harris for assets who aren't really considered assets.

Dray for Lonzo, who says no? Lonzo would play at the 3. Both are good defensive players, both put up good assist numbers, both are iffy shooters who can mostly only shoot 3s. Lonzo is younger not really a head case.

Are you really trying to argue why the league added an additional two spots and chose dirk over Luka? Cmon man. Luka is 19 he'll have multiple opportunities.
Yes. I think it's more important to a player's career to get into the All Star game as a rookie when they've earned it than a retiring star get into the All-Star game when they obviously didn't.

I really don't like that they'll bend over backwards to put Dirk in this All-Star game while snubbing Luka even when he's the second highest voted player.

They added Dirk and Wade because they were legacy players and probably retiring after this year. It was two special spots specifically added so fans could see Wade and Dirk at the all star game for the last time.

If Luka got enough votes from coaches/players/and fans he would be in the game. He didn't.

They are not going to make a extra roster spot so snubbed players like Luka can play.

The NBA created a structure where teams have no rational choice but to do shitty things and instead of addressing the system that is causing it, they punish the logical actors. Same as with tanking.

Looking at Lakers (left) and KIngs (right) remaining games, it could be a pretty close race. Potential game of the year for the 2 teams in March 25th at Staples Center.

Tanking teams have always rested good, healthy players (Celtics with Pierce famously like 10 years ago) The big difference is whether or not players went along with it. In this case AD has no reason to help the Pelicans, and if he's healthy and wants to play, the league and players association should protect him.

Dude. People pay Good money to watch Davis play. No one pays money to watch Melo chandler persons or whoever else they mentioned. The nba is looking after its revenue stream. Silly take.

why can't the pelicans look after theirs? if AD tanks his trade value by getting an injury that could be the end of a basketball team in new orleans

If they can just add roster spots at the drop of the hat like that, then they can do it for whatever reason they want.

Bulls got shitted on last year for resting Lopez. NBA threatened them with fines if they rested him again.

Carmelo was a net negative.

And as for Davis he wants to play. He's being played to play. Fans come to watch him play. He doesn't want to go into next year rusty.

To be fair, Carmelo and Parsons were not helping the team win. It was actually a good basketball decision to not play them. The same isn't true for Anthony Davis.

Today's NBA, where you can score 120, and get blown out. Is everyone a sharpshooter now? Every team has 3 guys who don't miss from 3, ever.

Carmelo and Parsons don't play because they stink. You may as well have fined the Knicks for banishing Noah

The anti tanking rule applies to teams not playing their best players because they are trying to lose. The rockets stopped playing Carmelo because he was bad. The rockets want to actually try to win a title this season. It's dumb.

They could have moved AD but chose not to. He's healthy and wants to play. They shouldn't be allowed to send him home. If they didn't want to risk him getting injured they could have traded him before the deadline

I think it's completely fair for a team to bench a player who requested a trade to preserve his health.
I also think it's fair for the league to fine them for it. Players should be able to request trades without the league melting down over it.

If AD refused to play and just flew to party in Europe or something and the Pelicans were in a better position and competing for a playoff spot, he'd be fined for a breach of contract.

AD is holding up to his contract obligations and isn't doing anything wrong. If players get punished for violating their contracts then teams should to.

AD didn't want to play for the Pelicans though. He and his agent did everything in their power to force a trade, including actions that intentionally lowered Ad's value. This isn't about tanking, it is about keeping AD from getting injured. Because of AD and AD's actions alone, an injury this season would be devastating for the Pelicans. Hard to blame the Pelicans for trying to take the most logical path left for them.

Dude. People pay Good money to watch Davis play. No one pays money to watch Melo chandler persons or whoever else they mentioned. The nba is looking after its revenue stream. Silly take.

And New Orleans is looking after their long-term revenue stream. Their attendance is already in the tank, both home and road. I checked the other night and you could score $2 tickets to a game at the hallowed Smoothie King Arena. If they don't get value for Davis then the franchise is turbofucked.

To be fair, Carmelo and Parsons were not helping the team win. It was actually a good basketball decision to not play them. The same isn't true for Anthony Davis.

It is an incredibly good basketball decision to preserve AD's health. Once AD publicly requested the trade, he destroyed some of his value, protecting as much of AD's value as possible is an existential imperative for the Pelicans.

This isn't about tanking though. If New Orleans could make an agreement with the NBA where their draft pick this year was #30 in exchange for being allowed to protect AD's health, they would do it.

And no, the Pelicans were not obligated to trade someone who publicly trashed their value right before the deadline a full year and a half before their contract is up. That is madness.

I'm saying a basketball decision as in to win basketball games this season.

Those defending the Pels, how would you feel if AD threats to sit out next season in case he gets traded to a team he doesn't want to sign long term?

This is what I am talking about about the structure of the league punishing logical actors. No good GM, or coach for that matter, makes decisions solely based on winning the next game. If winning each game in front of you was the only consideration, then Thibs' Bulls rotations would seem tame in comparison to what we would see.

A player is payed to play. Resting players because they feel tired/fatigued/something doesn't feel right is one thing.

Resting a player because you want to tank or keep a player who wants to play is bullshit.

If Davis is injured the Pelicans organization will be fine. They will still have lottery picks, a rich owner, and another chance to draft a star. Davis might be fucked depending how bad the injury is.

It's a players league, so I'm glad NBA is enforcing these rules. But lets not act like the NBA is targeting the Pelicans.

My point is that if the NBA really wanted to stop this behavior, they would need to change the things that incentivise it. These punishments don't fix the problem, which is why they aren't even being applied evenly. What AD did was a form of legal tampering and if you allow that, no other rules are going to fix the repercussions.

But the league did not allow it - AD and Klutch was fined.

The pelicans don't get to choose to keep there Cake and eat it too. They had the choice to trade Davis, they chose not to. That comes with risks and they now have to live with the consequences. They're are season ticket holders that bought tickets and the nba decided it was not fair for them to game those kind of people as well as there own player who wants to play. In addition they pushed for Davis to be fine cause of the request.... No one should pity for them for that and the nba doesn't either.

The fine was tiny and was only for saying the specific team he wanted to go to. As it is right now, players are allowed to publicly demand trades during the season and as long as that is the case, we are going to continue to have situations like this.

Davis' fine was for publicly demanding a trade himself (ie not doing it through the media like others have), he never publicly declared it was Lakers or bust.

In the grand scheme, the fine the Pels would get for sitting Davis, to the billionaires that own the team, is tiny too.

They don't have any cake! They haven't even eaten any cake. This is already an entirely cakeless situation for them. This all started with what Davis did. Do you really want a league where players, who are under contract for over a year and a half, can force a midseason trade for $.50 on the dollar and we blame the team for not complying? That is some pretty wild instability.

And how do you propose they fix this? It sounds like what your proposing is some form of authoritarian law that players cannot come out and speak their opinion during the season no matter what the situation may be. Let's be honest the only thing the league can enforce are the fines. They can increase the monetary sum all they want, but at the end of the day if a player is unhappy they have the right to say what's on their mind.

Everybody gets to play their hand. Davis wanted to be traded to a team of his choosing, his team told him no. The Pelicans wanted to keep Davis yet also sit him while healthy so that they could tank, he said no. They don't have to do him a solid, but he doesn't have to help them either.

Again, I don't think it is accurate to say that the Pelicans are sitting AD to tank. They haven't sat any of their other impact players and didn't firesale at the deadline. This is them reacting to a specific situation with a specific player that doesn't necessarily intersect with tanking.

The NBA is full of authoritarian laws. Forcing the Pelicans to play AD is an authoritarian law. I am saying that if you have the correct authoritarian laws, you can have fewer of them. I think right now the rules force teams and players to do crappy things in pursuit of their own self interests. I just want everyone to take a step back and think about how things could be restructured so people are more ofen incentivised to do things that are more beneficial for the long term health of the teams, players and agents.

I mean, he's already tanked his value by limiting teams he'd re-sign with to 3 or 4. If he sat and the Pels wanted him to play, they should be able to fine him. The contract AD signed gives NO control over his basketball life. He has no control so he should ride the pine if they say so or get on the court if that's what they want.
