NC House of Reps holds surprise vote while dems at 9/11 ceremony to override Gov Cooper's veto after promising Dems that no vote would take place

Nov 14, 2017

At this point it's like watching Charlie Brown continually fail to kick the football. You cannot take the modern GOP at their word, especially in states with notorious voting rights infringements like North Carolina.

In a surprise move Wednesday morning, the N.C. House of Representatives voted to override Gov. Roy Cooper’s veto of the state budget with just over half of the 120 members present to vote.

Democrats in the chamber objected to the bill being brought up, saying they were told there would be no votes during the 8:30 a.m. session and that it was just a formality so work could begin. Rep. Jason Saine, a Lincolnton Republican, made the motion to reconsider the state budget and chaos in the chamber quickly ensued.
You only need quorum (61 members) to hold a vote in the 120-member House. The Dems somehow managed to have 9 people show up with 55 Republicans in the house so the speaker called a snap vote.

“How dare you Mr. Speaker?” Butler said. “The trickery that is being evidenced by this morning is tantamount to a criminal offense.”

Butler described the vote as a “hijacking of the process.”
Butler told reporters that she was threatened with arrest on the House floor. She called the Republicans’ governing “scorched earth politics” and an “embarrassment.”
Override still has to pass the State senate, but the Senate vote is simple majority.

Jackson said he wants Lewis to recall the veto vote before it goes to the Senate, which is a simple majority vote.
Hey guys maybe the Republicans will do the honest thing and hold a re-vote.

They won't.

The Hundred Acre Wood
GOP changed the game, and Democrats continue to play by the old rules. Especially in NC there is NO reason Democrats should ever believe the Republican party. EVER.

Between voter apathy/exhaustion and gerrymandering they don't need to worry about backlash. They will continue to hold a significant portion of the elected positions no matter what they do.

they pulled this kind of fuckery to get the bathroom bill through too

the NC GOP is something else

Joe Biden and his supporters: They aren't bad people! They are just scared of Donald trump! Once he's gone they'll return to their senses!"

Everyone else: .... morons....

There are zero electoral consequences to playing dirty pool.

Republican voters want to stifle the Democrat’s agenda at every opportunity. Democrats need to get on board with these tactics unless there’s some weird significant percentage of voters that aren’t in favor of stopping Republican policies no matter what?

Dems need to start playing dirty. Fuck the GOP. Fuck trying to reach across the aisle. Stop trying to play nice with those racist ass monsters.

You probably post about me on another board.

A lot of the folks in here calling for Democrats to play dirty are also the first ones to cry foul about them trying to game the system in ways that don't immediately result in a dopamine hit.

Damn this is pretty low even for them.

I hope this wakes some of the Democrats up for how the Republican party works and operates nowadays, but I doubt it.

I mean there is a video of the Dems that were actually at the vote flipping the fuck out and screaming at the speaker so not like they just casually took it from them.
