NCAA acknowledges 'disrespectful' differences in amenities at men's and women's tournaments

No goddamn respect

The NCAA acknowledged the discrepancy in amenities between the men's and women's basketball tournaments on Thursday after images posted to social media drew significant backlash.

Pictures surfaced Thursday showing the stark differences in gifts that were presented to women's basketball players compared to men's. Stanford sports performance coach Ali Kershner posted photos of the facilities inside the Indianapolis bubble compared to the San Antonio bubble.

WNBA star Sabrina Ionescu, last year's national player of the year in NCAA women's basketball, fumed over a poor display in the weight room, tweeting: "Women’s @NCAA bubble weight room vs Men’s weight room... thought this was a joke. WTF is this?!? To all the women playing in the @marchmadness tournament, keep grinding!"

The picture showed the plentiful options in an Indianapolis weight room compared to a small rack of dumbbells in San Antonio.

A'ja Wilson, who plays for the Las Vegas Aces in the WNBA, tweeted the "weight room situation is beyond disrespectful.
NCAA vice president Lynn Holzman took accountability for the bad look.

"We acknowledge that some of the amenities teams would typically have access to have not been as available inside the controlled environment," Holzman said. "In part, this is due to the limited space and the original plan was to expand the workout area once additional space was available later in the tournament. However, we want to be responsive to the needs of our participating teams, and we are actively working to enhance existing resources at practice courts, including additional weight training equipment."

The "limited space" claim was called into question after a video was posted by a Rutgers staff member of largely vacant facilities.

Has it always been this or did the covid protocols have any effect here? I don't remember women's ncaa basketball having these issues before.

Not NCAA, but I remember years ago working in sports television and airing a surfing competition. The women's first prize was $10k. The men's was $100k. Like...what?

The end of her video is hilarious (and sad) because it destroys the excuse and narrative.
I'd hope it's just the case this year, and that it was whoever in charge made some ridiculously stupid mistakes about the setup - the dumb thing is NCAA backing up the tournament management team instead of admitting a mistake, you can't hide from this

LoL dude this is like a scene out of Arrested Development or something. Like the shady lawyer they hired made off with the bag of cash for the Women's group and some kids had to scrounge together supplies instead.

Good lord, they probably give the women sandpaper for toilet paper also.

Fuck the NCAA. If they were making as much money off the women's tournament as they do the men, I'll bet you'd see equal amenities then.

Absolutely disrespectful.

Not to take any attention away from that issue, but I am curious how much the weight rooms (both men's and women's) are even going to get used. When I competed in a completely different sport (and thus probably not very applicable,) weight training was done mostly in the off-season or bad weather and we did more sport-specific training in-season, especially just before/during a big competition.

Sports are an entertainment business more so than an athletic one, so competitions that garner more viewers tend to pay those participants more. Tennis was a notable exception to that rule, in that there was still a huge disparity in pay between men and women despite women getting as much, if not more, viewers than men, but my understanding is that gap has recently closed. I believe some volleyball and some surf leagues also pay the same now too.

Wow! Was not prepared for that.

Like others said, a crummy hotel gym is better than that.

Why did they even bother if that’s all they were going to do?

Clearly the extra space is so you can use the dumbbells to play catch with the NCAA execs. Hope they catch with their hands and not their heads! /s

Right, I was like 'all they got were some sets of dumbbells' and it turns out it is one set of dumbbells.

E: Also, whoever set this up was like "girls like yoga, right? I am so good a this"

Looks like chicken fried steak FYI, it is Texas after all. Although why would you use brown gravy instead of white 🤷🏽‍♂️
Ain't never seen any chicken fried steak that bad.

This is absolutely disrespectful and messed up. Not enough space? There's clearly enough and I know the school. It's not like anyone else practicing anything. Such a bullshit excuse.

I didn’t say it looked like a good chicken fried steak lol but I think that’s what it is?

This is ridiculous and so are all the comments of people saying "well then men's basketball makes more money so it's ok" like seriously I have more equipment in my living room than these teams are getting.
