Gentrified Brooklyn
Since the post is also debating the 'metal is racist/metal is totally anti racist' I figure id give my views.

I told this story on here before but as a black dude who's been going to hardcore/metal shows for almost 2 decades I never had a problem…

…until last year. One was minor. I was at a hardcore punk show who's lead singer is pretty left online and a girl in the crowd felt compelled to warn me there were two dudes with nazi tats being extra jerks in the pit (she was right). Not the first time ive seen stuff like that (last time was in a Hatebreed pit and a bunch of latino punk rockers flew their heads in glorious fashion) but the first ive seen since in years. I think she felt compelled cause Charlottesville was fresh on everyone's mind.

The second was heartbreaking. An underground label that specializes in extreme music of all kinds (noise, electronics, metal) had an anniversary party and one of the black metal bands decided to go full Nazi  I knew something was off because everyone was standoffish and I kept on thinking it was me being a weirdo, then suddenly I was surrounded by a neo-nazi singing along in full German (in gentrified brooklyn!!!) to a hit by these standup dudes.

Problem is that particularly in areas of metal that love evil imagery it's so easy for that stuff to fly and thrive under the radar because of the scenes insistence that "We just like scary stuff, nothing personal" (that same label party had a POC DJ as one of the earlier acts).

While there's tons of bleedover between punk and hardcore it seems that the hardcore punk scene is much more active at stamping out or at least separating themselves from their racist counterparts. It feels that on the metal side there's a bunch of apologists ("we metal fans get maligned all the time, we gotta give em a chance!" "We hate everyone equally!") along with the fact that black metal in particular struggles with the fact some of its seminal scene forming albums have been found to have been made by questionable people.

That said, over the years ive seen a larger amount of people embracing heavy music as access to it gets easier and the crowds have slowly grown more diverse as a result. And more dialogue about stuff like that too.

The tracklist is hilarious.

Unfortunately I find this kind of metal to be literally unlistenable.

Jesus, that sounded like a fucking awful experience. What the hell is wrong with people. I have seen the apologism you mentioned before and that shit needs to end.

Interestingly enough, I've been working on an album that's almost the complete opposite of these ideals. lol

I just love how those Black Metal joke albums save the juicest track for the outro.

These song titles and lyrics are hilarious! Too bad the music is really awful. It's like Marduk except noisier, less polished, and without songwriting chops. Too bad, I really would have been all over this had the music been better.

I am ignorant to metal. I had always thought metal bands in general had a hard on for neo nazi shit. This band and their angle have completely upended my beliefs. I am ready and willing to find out ive been dead wrong about metal. Please inform the ignoramus over here.
I mean, the National Socialist Black Metal scene isn't exactly tiny. I think painting with a broad brush is not wise, but I can see why people would be turned off.
Neo-nazi metal does exist, but it's fortunately a very fringe sub-sub-genre. I don't know if I'd call it "tiny", but it's certainly not "big" and definitely not mainstream.

I mean, the majority of metal is made by white people, so you do get some neo-nazi shit like Burzum, Marduk, Dissection and others, but there's so much fucking metal out there. I wouldn't give up on metal because of a couple of racist bands.
One of these is not like the others, dude. Burzum is fronted by a neo-nazi (though the music itself is just standard fantasy trash for the most part), but Marduk and Dissection are not neo-nazis.

I don't get it. Someone wanna explain it to me?
Zyklon B is a type of cyanide used in concentration camps by the Nazis. /b/ is the name of the general board on 4chan.
In addition to that, Zyklon-B is also the name of a black metal band. So it works on many levels haha.

Third point. Most metal bands, like most music bands or artists, is more apolitical than anything. I can't remember right any kind of hard hitting contemporary political message, from bands like Metallica, to Iron Maiden, to Bling Guardian, to Mastodon, Gojira, DIO, Nightwish, Iced Earth
LOL, what? Metallica had songs about the futility of war, the death penalty, drug abuse, etc. And Iced Earth had an entire album about American patriotism (it was also hot garbage, unsurprisingly), written and recorded in a response to 9/11.
It's true that many bands are mostly apolitical, but you really picked incredibly poor examples to support your point...

n suddenly I was surrounded by a neo-nazi singing along in full German (in gentrified brooklyn!!!) to a hit by these standup dudes.

Holy shit, that's beyond awful. I'm sorry that this happened to you.
