I don't get it... Why is it that hard to focus on handling and general feel of the game in today's racing games? That should be the main thing. And open world is a must? How about some really well designed tracks like we used to have...

All of the best NFS games have been open world, so, yeah I do think it's a must for this sort of game.

I miss the action and location of Rivals.
Actually I would take a remaster of Rivals with HDR running in the latest version of Frostbite than Heat. The city is painfully boring. Night racing on the other hand is a lot better.

dont wanna be a debbie downer, but... my impressions are not that great.
honestly I'm kind of finding it equally as average as Payback

the handling is a slight improvement, but overall it's still got largely the same issues. They added an option to double tap the throttle instead of brake to drift for drifting, but I'm honestly not sure it's made any difference. If you choose to tune your car to grip, it just feels way too understeer-y, and really highlights how "static" cars feel in Ghost's games - there's no body roll, no suspension, cars just feel planted, boring.

then there's the visuals. Daytime looks shockingly bad in some places. Bad pop in, the sharpening filter is way too aggressive, and just generally... really flat. Night time does look considerably better, but, NFS15 is still way more atmospheric. And the rain looks pretty awful in my opinion, the particles feel like they're taken straight from BF5, except not the rain particles but the snow particles...? They're so damn chunky lol.

And damn, the city feels dead as hell. Traffic is scrace and pedestrians are nowhere to be found. It really sticks out like a sore thumb here because the game doubles down on the city environment. They really should've done something about this, add a few pedestrians in the game like in The Crew who just jump out the way or add enclosed areas like in Forza where the pedestrians are spectating. Would've added so much extra life to the game.

What I do like, is the night concept - the risk/reward system is taken straight from Rivals. It can craete some truly tense moments, I love that. The music fits the setting, though I bet a lot of people are gonna be pissed with the selection. The story/dialogue is suprisingly not as terrible as in Payback. It's still fairly bad, but for a racing it's acceptable, I guess.

The car customziation is still the one area where NFS is simply not challenged. While FH4 and TC2 both added more customization, they are still a far cry from NFS. And Heat's customization seems pretty good from what I've seen - thankfully the GODAWFUL speed card system is gone.

I fucking loathed payback because of the speedcard system, but ignoring that, I thought it was an "okay" arcade racer. Now, Heat is basically that - with a few tweaks (actual free roam cops from the get go) and additions. It's... okay. It's fine. But I don't think it's really "good". The core of the game, which is the actual driving, is still not nearly as good as it needs to be. With NFS 15, Payback and now Heat, I just never feel like I wanna cruise around in the open world, whereas in The crew, Forza, I constantly do. Here, I just wanna do the races, story and then never play again.

I played using the 10 hour trial, not sure if I'll get the full version yet, maybe I'll do just to support Ghost as, despite me being quite crtiical of them, they really are one of the few remaining devs still doing big budget arcade racers.

sounds like NFS 2015 again...

Yo, whoever wants a custom character in the racing game, you got it.

Forget the cock-pit view, who cares about that in racing games?

YOU CAN CUSTOMIZE YOUR FUCKING SHOES.

Played for a few hours last night, came away with mixed impressions. I do think I'll play it some more though. I like the differences between day and night racing. I hit a glitch last night when where I wasn't getting any R points at night, which was kind of frustrating.

I do like the heat meter, and the risk/reward of trying to build that up. Tuning cars seems like something you can spend a lot of time on, as well as the customization.

Graphics are hit or miss. Playing the game on a 9 year old spinny hard drive, and textures can take forever to load in. Performance seems okay, feels like I'm getting sub-60FPS most of the time, but when it hits 60, it feels real smooth. I have an older PC, and set the graphics to automatic. Didn't feel like messing with settings last night, but I'll mess with the graphics next time I boot it up to see if I can get a smooth 60.

Overall, I like it better than I thought I would. I don't get too hung up on the story stuff. I just pretty much browse Twitter when any cutscenes start up haha. As far as arcade racers go, I prefer Forza Horizon 4 more than this game, but I can see myself putting a decent amount of time into Heat.

wish they figure out another way to present the campaign. the stories have always been terrible in nfs games. even back in underground days

Taken in totality, seems like pretty mixed impressions overall... similar to NFS 2015. Damn. I'll wait for reviews, but if it's middling, as well intentioned as Ghost games might be, probably time to hand the reigns over to someone else.

Reminds me of The Crew 2 honestly

fuuuuck - I hate those games

Yeah he talks about it on the Bombcast for a bit. Impressions largely seem to match this thread, that's its "fine" but rather soulless and empty. Didn't understand why they keep doubling down on the formula of this style of NFS. Not realistic enough for the fans to be brought in by the real cars, not fun/action enough for fans of Burnout. Sits in the middle where it won't fully please anyone.
I swear he said the same thing about Payback.

Meanwhile, Heat will be on sale for Black Friday so yeah, I'll wait until then.

Played about an hour of it last night on XB1X and its "fine".
Its not terrible but its not good either. The city is empty and pretty soulless. Game looks awful during the day but pretty damn good at night. The soundtrack is also pretty meh. The customization continues to be the standout. The sense of speed isn't really there but the actual racing and running from cops is cool.

I'll play some more of the next couple days but I don't see myself buying this.

the soundtrack is really wow... like, okay, I actually like a few songs on it, but it gets repetative SO FAST because they limit certain songs to play only at day/night. It's the same stupid decision that made Payback's soundtrack super repetative after a while because certain events only allowed certain songs.

I completely agree on the handling. When Criterion were in charge of this series the handling was amazing. The 2010 and 2012 NFS games were the only ones I've truly loved. It's been a sad state of affairs since then.

The open world thing is just what some people have come to expect at this point. I wish it would change but I doubt it will.

Man, the lag in the handling is not good. Feels like there's a half second delay that It takes for my car to react to my inputs.

Not sure what I expected though, the other two previous games have the same awful delay.

Sounds like another NFS iteration I will be passing on sadly. I looked back at all the NFS titles and just get sad to see this series dying. Last game I played was Rivals and it was okay, but their last high point was Hot Pursuit from 2010. Most Wanted from 2012 was close, but not quite as good.

Played for a few hours earlier and a perfectly serviceable arcade racer, will probably just plow through the the single player offline stuff since I have Origin Premier for a while. If it wasn't for that I wouldn't of bothered with the game..

Rivals was Ghost's first NFS and I don't think they topped it. If fact I think Rivals still looks better than Heat. Ghost should stick with exotic locations instead of an empty city.

the hyper aggression of the cops is kinda silly. They literally kamikaze into you at what seems like 350 mph and knock you out in 2 hits from full HP. Payback's cop chases felt a lot more balanced.

I quite like it. Though it is definitely the slowest starting NFS. Usually after you've played about 2/3 hours you feel like you can tackle anything but I feel as though even if there aren't speed cards they are padding things out more.

This isn't a trend I like in games (Breakpoint and general RPG style mechanics and halting progress) but I also like it in this game because it's not too intense and it does always make you feel like you're progressing and earning your cars and mods.

I love the contrast between day and night. I think the world/map is great. I was coming from the mountainous region at a clip and the city came into view beautifully. I think this is going to be like Undercover or Rivals in that it's super easy to just cruise around. The car customization is fantastic. Love the cops. Player customization is a neat touch. Soundtrack is awesome (Tory y Moi and Tycho!)

Overall I think it's going to go down as a great entry in the franchise if I were to guess and I'm looking forward to putting lots of hours into it.

Genuinely shocking a racing game is released in 2019 with such a dead open world. An even bigger shame because the map actually looks like the best in a NFS game for absolute ages.

Eh it's ok but I don't particularly care for it.
Back to The Outer Worlds and then Death Stranding, Shenmue 3, Fallen Order and Disco Elysium. And A Plague Tale. And Knights & Bikes. Etc.

There is a difference between favorites and best ones.

I don't like Underground 2 or Most Wanted 2005, but I know they are considered some of the best.

I don't think it's necessary to add that which NFS games I think are the best are my favourites. It goes without saying. But you got my two bests/favourites in one!

Thanks for setting up this thread, very interested in trial impressions. I downloaded and plan to try tonight.

I like Payback *gasp* so I'm probably an easier target than most. I don't like very open world racers unless there are options to make the experience somewhat linear with quick travel, race lineup/checklists, etc.
Just reported your post for saying you like Payback.

NFS 2015 had mixed impressions? The game had the worst driving physics ever implement to a AAA raver.

This series will be run into the ground soon.

Well Rivals is just Hot Pursuit 2010 but scaled down. So... Sure it had to be decent but it was really nothing special
Hot Pursuit 2010 IMHO is the best NFS and just a little bit of DNA from that in Rivals makes it special. At least the combat in Rivals was a breath of fresh air.
Now all racers want to be Forza. I welcome the new Grid and its closed in tracks.

I HATE how the story missions start off with you being escorted to the race. The escort driver drives so fucking slow, it's horrible.

Also only earning $ during the day and XP at night is pretty lame.

Agreed on NFS Hot Pursuit 2010. It was an amazing game. I would legit pay $60 for a port of that game to current consoles running at 60fps. One of the best arcade racers I've ever played.

This game is mediocrity through and through. The open world is the biggest weak point alongside the awful soundtrack.

Uninstalled sadly. Back to Driveclub...

The lack of diversity in the races is killing it for me. It just feels so boring. Needs some Burnout-esque variations to change things up. I'm rep level 9 and there are still barely any events around the map.

I like the music and day night stuff.

The cop system is weird though, I was parked on the side in my simple looking Mustang. Not doing anything at all, no one knows me as I'm brand new. Then a cop passes by and it's now a cop chase...lol

Played a bit more and still kinda enjoying it, though I definitely feel some of the complains in here.

Also unlocked drifting events and holy shit, I hope I just need to get a car (or tires maybe) and tune it towards drifting. because otherwise that shit feels terrible. And I don't even mean the drifting per se, I use it frequently in races. But those drifting courses are super tight and I can't seem to reach a decent speed to get my car to actually drift. So hope more drift oriented spec should help with that, otherwise I guess I'll wait until I get overleveled cars / parts to make things easier.

Some of their online implementation is... umm.. it has issues. I drove to an event, couldn't start it because it was apparently 'in progress' by another player. That's definitely a choice I guess, considering other players can just launch events solo and then they're taken. Okay, waited like 10 minutes and nothing changed. Drove to another event, tried to launch it twice and then got disconnected. Happy times. :(

Definitely couldn't recommend anyone to pick this up for full price, but it's been a fun enough time overall for me thanks to Origin Access.

The graphics on pc are terrible. There is no way to adjust brightness that I can find, the TAA implementation is garbage, the sharpening in the game is horrendous and offensive with no way to disable or reduce, and the screen space reflections are some of the worst offenders I've seen in any game in the last 10 years. And on top of all that, it runs at less than 100 fps on my 2080ti. This game is not impressing me at all.

Edit: and the game not only stutters, but corrupts the audio whenever it does stutter. And the game stutters a lot.
