I'm gonna be pissed if this game gets a free pass just because it's made by Kojima, while RDR2 gets shit on for being "slow and clunky". Everything I've seen so far makes me believe Death Stranding will redefine "slow and clunky"
Slow? You have an Akira-style motorcycle in this game. Clunky is also not word I would describe DS. If its CQC is anything close to MGSV's, it will be far from being clunky. Not like the clunky mess R* games are mechanic-wise (except for Max Payne lol).

First screen is gorgeous, the other ones not so much. I have high hopes the open vistas are not of the same design philosophy as MGSV open worlds were, padding. Really hope the traveling is meaningful and not busywork.

I know we've seen a fair bit already, but I really wish more studios would take the Rockstar approach and release 10-15 minute narrated gameplay segments.

The empty landscapes aren't really doing it for me without some concrete systems to map them onto. Hopefully Kojima starts trickling out some gameplay info soon.

Honestly, it's gonna be kind of weird to play Norman Reedus. Video Games was always about fictional character but playing someone who just look like an actor is going to be weird.

Fucking love desolate worlds. It's one of the reasons why Shadow of the Colossus is so good. Sometimes it's so much better than 100 Assassin's Creed feathers or GTAIV pigeons or whatever.

I love that we don't know too much. The impatient ones here can make their decision to buy or not closer to launch, or even after reviews.

I don't get how it's such a big deal.

Y'all shouldn't be expecting big gameplay reveals from Kojima's random Twitter posts. He just likes to post pictures, they're not meant to be news.

Looks great, but with it coming out so soon and us having seen so little of it over its relatively brief development period I'm starting to worry it's only 5 hours long or something.
Aside from The Phantom Pain, every MGS title is at most around 10h. of real gameplay (and between 3/8h. of cutscenes and forced dialogues). I'd set my expectations according to that.

Man I dunno. I'm super excited for this game but all these empty landscapes do absolutely nothing for me.

Kojima is definitely purposely not showing more.

Remember the MGS2 trailer shenanigans.
Not sure why this is so hard to understand for some.

But alas, we'll find out November 8.

This echoes what everyone kept telling me about MGSV having more than a barebones story. In this case it feels like the reverse but the same sort of "Kojima is doing what he did all the way back before even 9/11 happened and hasn't really done since, but he's definitely doing it again now" posts are everywhere.

We will indeed find out on November 8th and I do indeed hope you're correct. But this is precisely why I will be waiting for impressions.

It looks graphically and artistically amazing, and I'm certainly intrigued by it, I'm also just not sure how engaged I'll be with it. I'm getting major Breath of the Wild vibes, where the world might just be a tad too empty and sparse, and thus monotony inducing. We'll see I guess.

Way too many empty overworlds in gaming. Seriously, just make shit smaller

It almost feels like he's trolling us. Seems quite sparse on this part of the world. I wonder how chaotic the underworld, or whatever the other side is called, will be.

Plot I agree with but we already have a decent amount of knowledge on gameplay systems
  • There are bases in the open-world that belong to enemy factions like the Homo Demens that you can choose to engage with or simply ignore
  • Playing the game non-lethally will yield very different consequences compared to if you were to kill everything you came across
  • You can trade supplies and use camps built by other players to rest up
  • If you are killed by a BT (Beached Thing), you're sent to "Hades" and have to get out, doing so will cause a huge crater to appear in the area you died.
  • Timefall rain speeds up the ageing process for everything in the environment except for Sam himself
  • Carrying more supplies naturally makes traversing the environment more difficult due to the load, and supplies can be dropped + lost if you're attacked by an enemy and don't pick them back up
  • The sky is littered with different kinds of "Strands" including black and blue ones which seem to indicate where to go but also represent the "Social Strand System" connecting you with other players

Thanks for this. What does the highlighted part mean? I finally watched the trailer for this a couple weeks ago and while it looks very pretty, I had no idea what you're supposed to actually be doing. It also reminded me of a combination of The Last of Us and Metal Gear Solid, both of which I hated, so I wasn't super hyped about it.

I loved the MGS games but this doesn't look like anything. I'm stil on the "not buying it" side until i see some gameplay of what i'm going to do in game because right now, with all the cutscenes shown its looking like a cutscenes festival and i dont like those kind of games (detroit become human for example).

With like 3 months left, it's not a good sign for me that we still have no idea what this thing is. But i'm seriously hoping it's a great game because it would mark the beginning of Kojima Productions as a great developer and maaaaaaybe a PT spin off in the future? LETS GO KOJI

There's no way anyone with any sense told you that MGSV had more than a barebones story. That was 1000% the entire fanbase's single biggest complaint about the game. The only people that seemed not to care about the lack of story were newcomers that only cared about the gameplay.

I hope the UI is that clean during gameplay.

The UI seems to be kinda inspired by Dead Space - i.e. minimal and diegetic, with stuff like the bracelet showing health status, etc.

It also reminded me of a combination of The Last of Us and Metal Gear Solid, both of which I hated, so I wasn't super hyped about it.

If you hated both of these games, you're almost assuredly gonna hate DS (and virtually anything by Kojima).

Maybe but it could also be much much longer(by being grindy for example, hopefully it won't go the same route as other survival type of games).

The point is how you get from A to B, and what happens during the journey. You'll have to make your own way, hide from the undead/ghost presence, fight off the other corporations chasing you... It's (hopefully) going to be full of little events, as with MGS.
This..

The main goal isn't to explore. I'm sure you can, but the main objective is to deliver the packages to a specific destination.

In BOTW, there was always something interesting in the horizon in all directions that just invited the player to explore. The areas that we've seen in DS look like big empty spaces because the game is visually trying to lead you to complete the goal of delivering the goods. It's all in how you manage to get across the terrain to reach the goal.

The "Social Strand System" is basically what Kojima dubs the "Tactical Espionage Action" (synonymous with MGS) of this particular game. This is just my interpretation but Death Stranding is all about connecting with others and uniting together as one in order to achieve a goal and so presumbly, this Social Strand System would mean connecting with others online to help one another without ever crossing paths. This is done through strands (connections) that are in the environment if you look at the sky here.

It's quite similar to how Kojima wanted players around the world to get together for Nuclear Disarmament though this time it's part of the core experience. Indirectly helping one another and "reconnecting". Though this idea isn't really anything new, games like NieR: Automata and even Dark Souls have done this before.

Here's his explanation.

With the numbers RDR2 has sold I think Rockstar is comfortable with some people shitting on it for being slow and clunky.

Like i'm sure its going to be interesting one way or another, but like? Can we see even just like 20 minutes of continuous gameplay before we all declare this to be the next big thing?
