If you're curious about how much Paramount Global owns, this Wikipedia article is a good place to start.

One funny thing about this is Paramount owns CBS Media Ventures, which syndicates Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune, which is produced by Sony Pictures. So if Sony buys Paramount, I guess they get more control over distribution? Not sure how syndication works.

I think this is another spiderman thing. Sony owns the shows, not the rights to it.

The problem here is the potential for any games made based on existing Paramount IP being locked to PlayStation.

Seems like the entertainment business will change dramatically in the coming years. Paramount apparently up for sale, WB in a not so great (not to say dire) situation... Really curious to see what will happen.

I see. Are there any other interested parties outside of Sony+Apollo and Skydance? I remember also seeing a Microsoft rumor, but I assume that was bunk.

I'm not sure. Prior to this news of Sony/Apollo joint acquisition the 2 main companies linked to buying Paramount over the last few weeks were Skydance and Apollo Global. Just a few weeks ago Apollo offered $27 Billion and Paramount turned the offer down.

Sony Picture games haven't really been exclusive to PS though

From GhostBusters to StarShip Troopers to Smurfs, etc...

Only way I see it happening is if a WWS worked on such but then again even if Sony didn't own the I.P, any game from WWS unless forced not to would be exclusives anyways.

Still in terms of consolidation in Hollywood, owning Paramount would be worrying just by the sheer fact that Sony would join Disney and others in big a massive entertainment company more so then they are already.

Jokes on you, someone in the other thread is already saying that one major studio buying another major studio is not just a good thing but the best case scenario because I guess they think that would mean there would be fewer streaming services, or something.
Crunchyroll was the de facto place to watch seasonal anime and their variety is the biggest for catalogue anime as well. Sony now have a monopoly on that. Its bad for consumers cause there's no real competition for CR on its level or even close.

Netflix and other services don't even come close to Netflix.

its tv for guys

I think the only good thing to come from it was Afro Samurai

James Gunn had a web show on their site called 'PG Porn'
I didn't realize they had afro samurai. I mostly remember going by the channel or seeing the schedule and it always felt like 1000 ways to die was on

I think they had some sort of contract with LJackson, since he was also always hosting the Spike Video Game Awards

Lmao I just saw a video 2 days ago where dude was saying how bad it is that we only have five major Hollywood studios controlling everything. Now it'll be down to four. Yay consolidation.

Hasn't really applied to any other properties that Sony pictures own. Any of the animation stuff, anime, stuff like Ghostbusters, etc etc. they act pretty independently of each other. It's why you have crunchyroll appearing on gamepass for instance and things like that.

Yeah that's true, it's just the potential of shenanigans I don't like.

I don't know what you mean by "rights lockdown." Sega, MS, and Nintendo still own those IPs. Paramount (Sonic/Halo) and Sony (Zelda) just have the film adaptation rights, though in Zelda's case it's a co-production between Nintendo and Sony, with Nintendo financing more than 50% of the film.

I am not sure what I meant either...I guess it was a thought that any of those IP owners could shift away from Sony Owned Paramount if they wanted. Unlike say, the Marvel and Sony Xmen/Spiderman rights mess.

It's a strange move to me, but Sony and the Finance group must have a plan in mind to capitalize. Paramount has a pretty deep set of franchises they could dip into
