Sony expects PS5 to break 24-year-old console sales record

Gaming chief says China growth will be spurred by locally created content

TOKYO -- Sony Group, which expects to sell the most consoles in its history in the fiscal year beginning April 2022, is aiming to produce at least 22.6 million PlayStation 5s so it can reach that goal.

Jim Ryan, president and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment, the group's gaming unit, said during the company's Investor Relations Day presentation on Thursday, that SIE will "make sure FY2022 will be the highest year" for console sales.

Sony's best year for console sales was fiscal 1998, when it sold 22.6 million consoles of the original PlayStation. PS2, Sony's bestselling console of all time at over 155 million units, logged an annual sales peak of 22 million units in fiscal 2002.

Last month, Sony announced plans to sell over 14.8 million units of its next-generation PS5 console for the year through March 2022, a target that exceeds second-year shipments of the successful PS4.

The group, however, admits that the chip squeeze is making it difficult to keep up with demand and that continued constraints could hinder output.

As a result, PS5 consoles, which retail for $499, fetch as much as $900 on resale sites such as StockX.
Ryan also said the PS5 is close to becoming profitable and that production of the standard hardware version is expected to enter the break-even point next month. Sony also has a digital version of the PS5.

The SIE chief stressed that various factors will drive growth for the PS5 and its overall gaming business going forward. The factors include cutting-edge technologies like virtual reality and cloud-based gaming, as well as the PS5's China release.

The PS5 landed in China earlier this month, and Ryan said "market reception has been absolutely extraordinary."

He noted that the company will expand local marketing investments, focus on forming local partnerships and produce made-in-China titles.
"A very different strategy is needed in China," Ryan said, adding that the gaming culture around mobile and domestic content is strong. "We are much more focused on providing locally developed content."

Ryan called China "a complicated and difficult market with regulatory risks," but added that "if we do this right, it could represent a big business opportunity."

China has a population of 1.4 billion and a rapidly expanding middle class.

In further bids to expand its customer base, Sony will accelerate its exclusive content efforts in regard to the PlayStation and monetize its intellectual property by investing more in its powerhouse studios and partnerships.

The company plans to publish more games that can be played on PCs and extend its iconic PlayStation content to mobile games. Ryan said that using its intellectual property in Sony movies and TV shows will lead to "meaningful contributions to Sony's overall results."[

Is it not trending higher than PS4 launch aligned in Japan? Besides the Japanese market is not the be all and end all of console sales especially for Sony given their popularity in other regions.

Chip shortages will make it tough but they managed to ship more PS5s than PS4s in the same amount of time despite this problem so they might just pull this off

Switch is going to sell close to 200mil though? Maybe this is only for Sony consoles

edit: do they mean WW? PS5 will have to have a much longer Gen imo, I don't think. Xbox will affect them too much. Demand is huge and will be the fastest selling console to reach 60mil, and possibly 80mil/100mil (well maybe)

Double edit: as for NSW they don't seem to affect each other so there is that too. Regardless if both ps5 and NSW break Ps2 number that would be well over 300mil from just 2 consoles

This is about shipments and self-records, guys. Which, props if they can pull it off, since supply has been pretty rough in comparison to demand.

Article has nothing to do with the Switch

This too.

Of course Jim is talking about worldwide and not just one region.

And right on cue, seems ppl are not actually reading the OP or article.

You would think a company would focus on its own records vs the competition....c'mon ppl.

That's not what the news is about. They are talking about record Sony PS shipments for a year. People just mentioning the Switch for no reason.
When reading the OP is hard.

Thank you.

Going along with that chart they shared about costs decreasing over time, it makes me think the rumored 6nm PS5 will also come with some price cut in 2022.

22M is a big goal, they can hit that for sure with GOW, GT In 2022.

my guess is summer 2022 6nm PS5 slim or regular model with cheaper, less scarce parts. $399 price cut or long temporary sale for standard model in fall 2022.

PS4 did about this well (obviously PS5 is doing even better) and it also broke even around 6-7 months post release, and got a price drop around the 2 year mark with internal revision.

They've sold whatever they managed to ship to Japan so far so I'm not quite sure that would be much of an issue. Overall, their allotment to Japan has been lower than previous consoles though.

What's Sony biggest FY? PS4 with 20mil right? If ps5 can do 23mil in its FY3 (which is basically FY2) that would be huge. 50mil could be possibly in under 2 and a half years

No, it's 22.6 for PS1 in FY98. Look at the above graph I provided.

Thiago,

Maybe you should include that graph from Sony that I have shared here in order to eliminate or at least reduce confusion.

Yep, if they keep up with the games and announcements, it's likely. Demand is off the charts and hasn't died down a bit for any of their SKUs despite already record breaking numbers in many regions.

It's shocking how many people didn't read the OP in this thread lol
Its not really. It always tend to come down to a us vs them when it comes to sales. Anyway, 23 million for PS5 is insane, even with a floundering Japan. With the right mix of software and availability, it should happen.

and this is why you read everything lol

Well DS :-)

NDS FY09/3: 31.18M
NDS FY08/3: 30.31M
NSW FY21/3: 28.83M
NDS FY10/3: 27.11M
WII FY09/3: 25.95M

So Nintendo will be breaking another record too soon 😊

It's shocking how many people didn't read the OP in this thread lol

It's literally in the first sentence of the thread. Sony aims to beat their own record.

We don't have time to read the actual OP 😉

I know the poster here literally copied the title of the article at the website, but it's amazing that the topic was so poorly written.

But yes I did not read the article as close as I should have it so the fault is on me.

Chinese DMC x FF will do it. Sony is smart to invest into that market.

Sony found tremendous success in other parts of the world.

It's clear the the Japanese market is not interested in home consoles.

Sony rightfully put more energy in other places where people want home consoles.

And they are breaking records doing so....

I wouldn't call ~10 million units in one country a "drop in the bucket".
1. They've sold closer to 9 million than 10 in Japan.
2. That's PS4's not PS5's.
3. The declining brand value of Playstation in Japan suggests that they will sell even less PS5's than PS4's

Compared to the USA, Europe and projections of China... Sony is expecting a drop in the bucket.

Sony still sells decent in Japan, it's far from the heyday when Playstation sold 20+ million there but as of now it is slightly ahead of where the PS4 is right now. It's kinda crazy how even though Japanese sales dropped by 50% and the US sales dropped due to Xbox becoming a big competitor, Playstation still sells so much because of it's growth incredible in Europe the last ten years. IIRC that was due to Jim Ryan and what got him so much clout at Sony and it looks like his goal is to try and grow in the Chinese market and have the brand take off like that there.
