I mean, at this point we know more about 2019 than we knew about 2018 this time last year. I think we're fine for a while longer.
We only have one game with a concrete date, being in March. Unless a mini direct announces multiple new first party titles and details release dates for most of the other ones announced, H1 would almost definitely be pretty sparse. I don't think we'll get a mini direct, though.

And? There's still a decent chance Smash doe outsell gen 8. Being the fastest selling Nintendo game ever is nothing to sneeze at. Not saying it will happen, but saying so without doubt is being foolish.
It's not the fastest selling Nintendo game ever, it's the fastest selling Nintendo home console game ever.

Sun/Moon still have Ultimate beat at 14.xx million units in its first quarter.

Zelda BOTW and Mario Odyssey both deserve direct sequels.

Between those and a new Paper Mario returning to TTYD roots, 2020 has the chance to be the best Nintendo year... EVER

You know it'd be cool if Nintendo did mini Treehouses after Directs. They did one after the Smash Direct. It'd be cool if they did a Treehouse after General Directs

If and when a Breath of the Wild sequel launches, I will call in sick from literally everything else in my entire life for two months

Isn't 2020 a little too soon for a new Zelda 3D?

I mean:
2006 - TP
2011 - SS
2017 - BotW

If they use the same engine, largely the same assets and focus mainly on dungeon building, side quests and world building it's totally possible.

I think the biggest development/time cost in BOTW was getting their physics engine and the open air concept down.

So if all the games rumored for 2019 are true....what series are left for 2020? Just curious.

Paper Mario, Bayonetta, Pikmin...

I guess we could get a new BOTW Zelda, Mario Odyssey 2 or a new Mario Kart....but what franchises am I missing?

I have to imagine preproduction on a sequel was started alot earlier than we think, considering it was originally targeting a 2015 date, then delayed further for the switch day and date.

Oh, thanks for that correction, but Smash's sales hadn't even been recorded for a month at that point. That's also not talking into consideration the age and install base of both the 3DS and Switch. They're very hard to compare.

I think the next goal will be to make original games for each franchise that has been ported. Such as mario kart, dkc, 2d mario, etc. There are a lot of games still to be made, especially if you don't include the wii u ports.

EDIT: Also, the rumored games are to be announced this year, not necessarily released.

Hold on, are there rumours about a new Paper Mario returning to its roots?

If so, I'm not sure I could handle the hype.

Nope, it will be 3.5 years (will probably be a 2020 holiday title) and Aonuma said that he wanted to put out zelda games faster.
Also, all that games had troubled developements that caused multiple delays. (I even have a theory that BOTW got rebooted in 2015 lol, but thats another story)

Mario & Sonic at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, 2D Metroid, Wii Fit/Brain Training/Wii Sports, Style Savvy, Nintendogs, a Pokemon remake (DPPt please), Captain Toad 2, Tomodachi Life/Miitopia, Sushi Striker 2, Monolith's medieval action game, WarioWare, Rhythm Heaven, Fatal Frame, Mario Golf, Yo-Kai Watch 4/Bravely/Hyrule Warriors 2 western publishing, new IP.

EDIT: Not suggesting next ywar would have all those + what you said, just some possibilities.

Breath of the Wild's physics engine took some time to develop. There is no exact data around AFAIK but it seems like it took almost half of development time just developing the engine. I guess making a new one wouldn't really be worth it right now. I'm personally interested in what kind of Zelda style are they going to go for next. Return of the Toon Link? Young Link? Keeping Cell shaded Link? New one?

I wonder if they will be able to get close or even reach this kind of fidelity on the next game with a Switch only title or on a possible Switch Pro version:

I don't think so but I might be wrong!

2020 doesn't seem unlikely like a Zelda delay doesn't seem unlikely LOL

For some reason I never even thought of Nintendo possibly releasing a sequel to Captain Toad.

And now I'm hyped.

Ugh.

I've been holding out for the Switch version. Curious how well it'll perform though given how much it's got going on.
True. I honestly don't know which version to go with haha! I'd be fine with either to be honest!
so true but yet i don't think crash team racing has been announced for pc yet.
Oh dang you're right! I was gonna get that one for Switch anyways but you have a point about no PC version.

No no no, please dont get your hopes up

Keyword in my post was chance

Still though, they made 3D Mario open and explorative again, and they made Mario Party a board game again as well. There's a tiny glimmer of hope that Nintendo may be thinking the same way for the Paper Mario series, after the giant backlash that came with Color Splash's reveal
