Looking like Katana Zero, SteamWorld Quest, Box Boy and Box Girl, and maybe Cuphead for me this month. Kind of itching to play FF7 again too.

The Friends of Ringo Ishikawa looks super interesting. I've heard from a friend on steam that the ending really lets it down though.

I've never played a mainline FF game before. Which one should I start with? Asking about ones that are playable on Switch or will be by the end of the month. My favorite aspects of JRPGs are: sidequesting, exploration, enemy/monster visual design and variance, character development, and party member interactions. Thanks!

Finally getting around to Assault Android Cactus, and it's a lot of fun! NieR really turned me to bullet hell shooters and AAC feels a lot like that.

Thanks again for the copy, Paz!

oh wow, that's tough, XII checks all those boxes but people don't like that you can technically automate combat so well it plays itself.

9 or 7 should work, but honestly go find 6 on whatever you can play it on, and start with 6, and then 5 and then 4 and then go 9,7,8 10, 12

Really, all of them will offer those things, so you can't go wrong.

FFVII's graphics and localization have aged the poorest by a wide margin, but it's a classic that holds up otherwise. It uses ATB combat.

FFIX has a more ageless aesthetic and good localization, but its battles are slightly sluggish (alleviated by the fastforward). It has probably my favorite Final Fantasy party, with very charming interactions, and a compelling storybook narrative. It uses ATB combat.

FFX has closer-to-modern graphics, and purely turn-based combat. It tells a more linear, cinematic story than other available entries, therefore has the least exploration. Its party and character development are both quite good, though.

FFXII also has closer-to-modern graphics. Its combat is unique, sort of a mix between ATB and Dragon Age-style AI party. It has the best exploration and side questing of the four, as well as a good story in a well-conceived world. Its party members are compelling, but their interactions less so.

Those are all solid and fun, but honestly fuck this nes online stuff. I know terse words, but I am fed up with it. They could have just dumped the NES classic on their and added more from that point.

Just realized Star Soldier is Konami, so I guess they're still supporting it? I was hoping they'd add the Castlevania games, but I guess that's what the Castlevania Collection is for.

How long is the gap between US & JPN announced games for NES/Famicom online? I don't see any news on what Japan's getting next week, though I could see them getting the same games this month.

Edit: Japan getting the same games. No additional game or substitute game this month.

Though actually, Lost Levels is technically our first "import" game.

Great NES Online month for shmup fans.

With 'Star Soldier', we finally have a NES shmup exclusive that is not a downgraded arcade port.

And one of the finest available on the system.

Konami's already got a few games on the NSO, so yeah, they're supporting it (I would not expect Castlevania or Contra, though).

Honestly if you can say anything positive about Konami in gaming over the last 5-7 years, it's that they've been solid supporters of re-releasing their classics, particularly through Nintendo's various Virtual Consoles as well as similar ventures like Hamster's Arcade Archives and Xbox BC.

It's not always quality, Silent Hill Collection says hi, but farming out their stuff to other people for free profit is probably pretty agreeable to today's Konami.

Ugh that nier comment made me want to buy it... Too many games
To be clear, AAC+ shares almost nothing with NieR beyond the shmup segments, so if you're tight on cash and don't love those bits of NieR it might not be a relevant comment for you.

It is currently the #1 rated Switch game of 2019 on metacritic tho so maybe you'd like it anyway :P

Picked up Nairi: Tower of Shirin since it was on sale. I like it so far. Nothing too complicated, but I really like the art and the music isn't bad either.

The game has been featured in the Eruopean eShop Highlights for March.

I don't know how it works in the US, but Nintendo Europe invests a lot of money in promoting these videos in general webs.

Ads with these videos appear in sites like Facebook, or in important sites such as Destructoid if an European IP is detected. And sometimes, they also pay to feature the highlighted games for each month in the front pages of the video game sites with more traffic in each country, through dedicated campaigns.

So you should see a bump in the sales for the month of April :)

The Arcade Classics release is simply a collection of Hamster releases, so emulation should be the exact same quality we're already used to (good thing IMO as their releases are largely excellent).

The Castlevania and Contra collections tho, we don't really know who's handling them. I really, really want it to be M2 but they're stupidly busy with AGES and now the Megadrive Mini, so I doubt it.

And by the way, you're in for a ride with classic Castlevania, there's so much top tier goodness in there! And judging by the games revealed so far I'm confident we're getting the best, namely Bloodlines, Rondo and (HOPEFULLY) The Adventure Rebirth.

I'm excited to finally tackle those classics, for sure! Might hold off a few months after release and save them for a Halloween mini marathon though.

Interesting that the Arcade Classics collection has Hamster involved. That definitely helps put my mind at ease a bit and hopefully the final product aligns with the quality I've come to expect from them with their ACA releases.

And if only all retro compilations had M2 at the helm. That's a world I wouldn't mind living in. :)

Super stoked to finally get to work on a game headed to the Switch. I think Hob is a really nice fit for the platform and The Definitive Edition has some improvements over the original release. Most notably, the camera has been tweaked to cut down on the senseless deaths that happened in the original. There's also been some general UI improvements and an smoother framerate (30 fps).

You mean that the game is smoother on switch than on other console? That would be a first. Either way, I'm in.

The Switch port of 'Snow Battle Princess Sayuki' is not so stellar.

They have wrapped an emulator into an Unity application, and I don't know if the emulated game is the PS2 or the Wii version of 'Heavenly Guardian'.

But it has some heavy slowdown that wasn't present in none of these versions.

With the framerate tanking when there are too much enemies on screen.

It's a shame, because while the original was far from a classic or a genre-defining game, it was still a fun shmup infused with personality.

And one of my favorite oddities from the Wii catalogue.

A weird game, trying to offer a traditional 8-way shooting experience from the 90s and with great 2D graphics, in a time in which nobody was caring about these games anymore.

This Switch version is still recommended for shmup collectors, because it's still fun to play.

But if you have a Playstation 3, there is a digital release as a Playstation 2 Classic, that is still the version to go if you want a digital version faithful to the original source material.

For FF9 questions, it's pretty easy. Just use normal speed in towns, and in dungeons. When transition to battle, high speed mode. I do this in all of the FF games that have the option. 3X speed is a GODSEND in FFVII as well. Hell, playing WoFF right now, and FF mode rocks there as well

FF9 is my favorite FF, and the FF mode got rid of my only complaint about the game

People who have played Darksiders, when y'all say that it's similar to Zelda what do you mean? Like dungeons and items? I've been watching some videos and it looks a lot like God of war which I don't dislike. I'd just like to know what to expect.

I would say it's actually a mixture of both Zelda and God of War. The combat is very GoW but the dungeons are like Zelda. You need to find keys to make your way through a lot of them and there will be an item in the dungeon that will be critical in you progressing further, both in the the dungeon and the overworld.

With Hellblade dropping next week and Shakedown Hawaii probably dropping very soon, a busy month just got even busier. My bank account can only get so empty.

Combat is better than God of War. It also has dungeons and items for solving puzzles, so structure is very much pre-Botw Zelda. Personally I like the game a lot.

Oh yes!! Coming this week from Hamster as part of their Arcade Archives...

For those unaware, it's actually a shooter rather than a platformer.

I also love shmup style segments in games. The reason I don't get more into the genre is that most games are super short, aimed at high score chasing mentality, which is not my thing.

How long would you say the game last for a regular playthrough?

The main story can last you around 3-4 hours depending on on your skill level, but that's not counting the pretty great remixed campaign that should double that play time.

Also speaking as someone who almost never chases high scores in games, the very visible and comprehensible combo system in AAC made me actually try to better my high scores in many stages. It's pretty well realized and works well with the ranking system; reminds me of DMC's style meter.

Looks like an updated Out There Omega. The original was pretty cool but I am unfamiliar with the Omega update to know how much they're adding to the Switch version:

For space explorers familiar with Out There, there will plenty of new content in Out There: Ω The Alliance such as three new spaceships, more than 30 new interactive stories, new 3D planet environments, alien escort missions, new Cocoon tech, and an additional ending to discover.

  • A dark and challenging strategic adventure in deep space
  • Every game plays out differently within a procedurally-generated galaxy
  • Epic main storyline leading to any of 5 different endings
  • 13 spaceships with different specs to discover
  • Crafting system with alien technologies built from raw material found in space
  • Engage with alien life forms and learn their language
  • No combat! It's just you against the harsh environment
  • Fantastic pulp comics graphics and art style
  • Lovingly adapted from the original play style for the Nintendo Switch™
  • Eerie score by award-winning composer Siddhartha Barnhoorn featuring vocals by Lara Ausensi

I am playing it right now in handheld on my Switch and it seems to run at a steady 30 fps. From what I have heard from Panic Button, the performance is smoother on Switch than in the previous version.

Oh wow, I used to play this all the time at the local Kroger grocery store in Spring, TX back in the day (along with DK Jr.). I was only ever able to make it in a few stages before getting overwhelmed. LOL

Has there been any feedback on the quality of the Hellblade port? I know people were gushing over the audio technology used in the original release, hoping that's still present here.

Their legend continues to grow.
Last night I dreamt that Nintendo bought Panic Button and other studios (like Shinen) and formed a tech support joint to help porting third party games to Switch, lol. Of course, Panic Button already does that, but in my dream it was a much more aggressive proposition.

Oh cool. I remember playing this and thinking it was weirdly fun for such a different game in the DK series. I don't know if I'd pay $8, but I'd gladly chip in when there's a sale.
