In games that support it, yes. Not all multiplayer games do, however.

Well, I'm not personally a fan of strategy RPGs, so I would go with Ys by default. With the caveat that the Switch version suffers from spotty performance in some areas. Nothing too bad, but if you can play it on PS4 instead, do that.
Smash would be the biggest example, and in general, most of Nintendo's multiplayer games support it. There's no system level feature like the DS and 3DS' Download Play, so both systems need to have the game to play it together (except for a few games that released on the eShop a special version for playing multiplayer with a system that does have the game). Various other games support it as well.
I feel that unless I have it on handheld, I probably won't commit to playing it, which is a bit silly on my part. Shame about the platform-specific performance issues though, as that can be especially detrimental in an a-rpg.
Not at all, it's perfectly reasonable. I have a hard time playing long games rooted in front of a permanent screen.
Just hold in the Home button, depending on your signal to your Switch it can take a second or two to react.
I actually picked it up on sale a while back. Just played through it a few weeks back and had a good time. I'd definitely recommend it for that price.

Nice! No enemy respawn during a level would be awesome. Now I can explore levels without worrying about ammo as I almost always run out of ammo in 1 because I like taking time to explore every nook and cranny.
