Couple of games I would like to learn a little more about:

Torchlight II: I played the first game on XBLA way back. I remember liking it. Is this one basically bigger and better?

Birthdays: The Beginnings This game looks bonkers and it has never been cheaper. Anybody here play it?

Torchlight 2 is a proper game where the first was barely a concept so yes.

Cat Quest is pretty fun for a $4 game. It's super sensitive to my joycon drift though. Honestly think I'm at the point where I need new joycons or I need to mail mine in and be without a Switch until I get them back. But it's my most used system so I don't know how that would go.

How quickly does Nintendo repair them?

It is cheaper? US has it at $40 still.

I added it the other day to my wishlist for how cool it looked. How does it play? Is it a hide and seek game ala Amnesia? I don't enjoy that kind of gameplay, but classical survival horror like SH o RE I'm all in! And 5€ if I remember correctly
It's.... unique. You search for a key and then unlock the door in each room. Some will have a killer in it that stalks you like Nemesis from RE3. Eventually you'll get a weapon and can kill weaker enemies.

PSA: if you are looking for a building-type game and are eyeing Community Inc since its on sale in EU, beware that it's apparently basically abandonware, it has very little features and a msotly negative aggregate on steam reviews.

Thanks Brakke for the King of Cards recommendation!

Anyone pick up Vitamin Connection?

I'm interested in this one but waiting for reviews. This one from NWR makes it sound pretty darn awesome though, just as I'd hoped:

All in all, Vitamin Connection is one of the best games on the Switch eShop, period. While there is a little backtracking to be done, the game just glides by and is a smooth experience all the way through. The levels are rich with fun obstacles and challenges that test your skills. In addition, the sub-games break up the gameplay in a non-intrusive way, making for fun surprises. Most importantly, however, I absolutely love the presentation. The whole look of the game made me grin constantly, with colorful characters and funky Japanese music taking charge. No matter if you're playing alone or with a pal, Vitamin Connection is made with this system in mind.

Vitamin Connection Review - Review

I also came across a feature interview on Nintendo Life about the making of Vitamin Connection:

Feature: WayForward On Vitamin Connection's Switch Exclusivity, Challenges And Influences

I can see similarities with Kururin, but hopefully it's not as tough as those. I can also see some Affordable Space Adventures vibes.

I played it through for the first time in January. Tech was awful. Tons of slowdown, several hard crashes. I think there's been one patch since then but I haven't gone back in. I can't imagine it's "fixed" tho. In any case, the game just looks kind of bad overall. Animations especially get really stilted in a way I couldn't tell if it was dropping frames or just... bad.

The core of the game was interesting enough to me that I dealt with it, but your tolerance may vary.

Wow, the SNK 40th Anniversary Collection is such a great collection!

First of all, the presentation is really good. I mean, reeeeaaaally good. There is a museum with slideshows for each game included in the collection (and even games not included). They're presented in chronological order and feature interesting information on each title. This contextualizes the games and explains what makes them relevant, motivating you to play.

I've only played the first two games: Ozma Wars (1979) and Sasuke vs. Commander (1980) and they've obviously aged terribly, but they're kind of addicting in their own way?

Ozma Wars uses the same hardware as Space Invaders and it's hard as nails: some of the enemy shots follow you when you move, enemy ships go into... let's call this "stealth mode", where you can't hit them (or even see them) for a few moments and the "boss" battles are brutally difficult. Still, a fun little game from 1979.

ERS0YCuU0AAqSCo

Notice how the sprites transition from one color strip to another as in real-life overlays

This was a black and white game, but it was usually paired with the same color overlay used for Space Invaders. In the collection, the game is presented with a fake color overlay (a very nice touch).

Sasuke vs Commander features a "plot" (and by "plot" I mean the screen below):

ERSvcLmU0AAu6tB

The museum says this might look silly today, but it was big in 1980 since games at the time usually had no plot at all presented on-screen. The game is also arguably the first ever to use the term "boss". I find it interesting that there are different bosses, it's not the same guy showing up over and over again. Here's some of the action if you're curious:

If you're into gaming history, then by all means I suggest you grab the collection (which is now on sale in NA, 50% off). It's absolutely worth it, and I haven't even tried the "good" games yet.

It's missing Baseball Stars NES which the XBONE version got. An incredible Baseball with RPG elements game from the system and a pioneer in that it allowed women in the game.

It did when I bought it the last time it was on sale.

Pretty sure Yu No also comes with the game forever.

How's Alliance Alive HD?

PC's my preferred platform but game's not exactly a looker, and can't find any info (framerate and whatnot) on that version because they delayed it half a year and nobody even knew it came out on PC basically.

Might just grab on Switch if the version is decent and the game is good while it's on sale.

I have played around 15 hours and haven't noticed any Switch issues. Runs fine to my eyes at least. Really fun game but you really can tell it was a 3DS game prior (still love it!)

The most recent patch (January 15th) improved the werewolf tower area (one of the roughest pre-patch) and reduced overall loading times. I was 2/3 through a full playthrough then and the whole game was much improved from launch. I enjoyed it, got 100% of the shards and explored the castle fully.

Anyone have Katana Kami impressions? Definitely interested in that one, but it's too pricey for an impulse buy.

Played Vitamin Connection for about an hour. Finished the first mission and replayed the mini-games a few times.
It reminds me of the early experimental games released on the original DS such as SEGA's Rub Rabbits.

There's a story mode and each boss is a unique minigame which you can later access separately. Voice acting is excellent, music is very good and animation is very reminiscent of Cartoon Network shows.

Tried the Langrisser demo yesterday and I'm so, so glad we can go with the classic style...

It's also cool that they let you choose old graphics for the maps and the original soundtrack. I just wish we could use the classic sprites, because the new ones scream "generic mobile game".

Hey TheMoon, I know you love tactics games as much as the next orbital body: do you have Broken Lines and Alder's Blood on your radar?
Alder's Blood at least sounds familiar? Ah looked it up, yes that was on my radar!

Broken Lines doesn't ring a bell though. Looked up a video and the WW2 (but cartoony?) setting turns me off a bit.

I hope we get the new game from the Mutant Year Zero guys that just stealth launched on EGS at some point..

Yeah, I'm not a big fan of the cartoony character portraits, but I can overlook that if the game is up to snuff, and based on impressions of the PC, it's looking good. Also, I'm sure I read that it's not plain WW2, but has some occult stuff going on.

I don't have much faith in those Mutant Year Zero guys, to be honest. They dropped the Switch port like a sack of hammers. I don't care that it was low res, but it was very difficult to spot the shiny pickups because they looked exactly like the flowers in the background. This la would have been trivial to fix, but they didn't bother. Given that they have a new game in they way, I guess it wasn't a priority to fix the old one.

That was High Voltage's port, not the actual devs of the game, they even went back in and fixed it up some more after they initially said they wouldn't do more updates after the day 1 patch.

Aah, I stand corrected then. Didn't realise it wasn't ported internally. I know there was one more patch after release, but afaik that was all, and didn't fix that glaring issue.

I'll keep a open mind on the new game, but I certainly won't buy it sight unseen like I did MY0.

I've been playing Sayonara Wild Hearts and Vectronom lately, and both games are sweet!

Sayonara is like an interactive music album, it's on the easy side and short. But replayability is there when you unlock the full run mode with no interruptions. Rhythm isn't important actually, unless you're going for those gold medals

Vectronom is more focused on rhythm, though, which is particularly good with that great, great soundtrack. Very satisfying stuff when you "get" the level's pattern and perform well.

Art rocks hard in both games. Honestly, they should stay in your collections XD
