Wow, the
SNK 40th Anniversary Collection is such a great collection!
First of all, the presentation is really good. I mean, reeeeaaaally good. There is a museum with slideshows for each game included in the collection (and even games not included). They're presented in chronological order and feature interesting information on each title. This contextualizes the games and explains what makes them relevant, motivating you to play.
I've only played the first two games: Ozma Wars (1979) and Sasuke vs. Commander (1980) and they've obviously aged terribly, but they're kind of addicting in their own way?
Ozma Wars uses the same hardware as Space Invaders and it's hard as nails: some of the enemy shots follow you when you move, enemy ships go into... let's call this "stealth mode", where you can't hit them (or even see them) for a few moments and the "boss" battles are brutally difficult. Still, a fun little game from 1979.
Notice how the sprites transition from one color strip to another as in real-life overlays
This was a black and white game, but it was usually paired with the same color overlay used for Space Invaders. In the collection, the game is presented with a fake color overlay (a very nice touch).
Sasuke vs Commander features a "plot" (and by "plot" I mean the screen below):
The museum says this might look silly today, but it was big in 1980 since games at the time usually had no plot at all presented on-screen. The game is also arguably the first ever to use the term "boss". I find it interesting that there are different bosses, it's not the same guy showing up over and over again. Here's some of the action if you're curious:
If you're into gaming history, then by all means I suggest you grab the collection (which is now on sale in NA, 50% off). It's absolutely worth it, and I haven't even tried the "good" games yet.
