Per Japanese Nintendo

tokyo-mirage-sessions-fe-screen-1.jpg

It seems the big thing here is that Nintendo is apologizing for not telling its customers that #FE Encore is based on the altered Western Wii U version before pre-orders went live after advertising it as the original Japanese release with store screenshots.

Nintendo have issued an apology for the Japanese version of Genei Ibun Roku ♯FE Encore (Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE) on Nintendo Switch being altered and not relaying this information earlier. People who have pre-purchased the title on the Nintendo eShop or My Nintendo Store will be able to cancel their order for a full refund.

The Japanese version of Genei Ibun Roku ♯FE Encore (Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE) on Nintendo Switch will be a universal release that adds new elements based on the Western Wii U game and thus, not untouched, according to a message added to the official webpage. The original Wii U release saw more risqué content on the domestic Japanese version including several bikini-clad female characters. Many thanks to both Naruki and JPUncut.

Translated apology - Credit to BlackKite for this one
We hereby apologise to customers for the mistake and for not delivering enough information regarding the contents of prior notification for Genei Ibun Roku #FE Encore, the software for Nintendo Switch scheduled for release on 17 January 2020.

This title adds new feature into Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE (released in 2016), the Western version of Genei Ibun Roku #FE, the software for Wii U that was released in 2015. We are proceeding with the development with a worldwide common specification and aiming for a worldwide simultaneous release (You can enjoy Japanese language voices in the game).

However despite that, on the promotional activities for Genei Ibun Roku #FE Encore, we did not inform from the beginning that this title would be based on Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE. And also in the official home page, we mistakenly posted game screenshots from the Wii U domestic version of Genei Ibun Roku #FE that wouldn't have been included in this title, so the situation caused a misunderstanding to our customers regarding the content of this title.

So on 10 October 2019, we performed replacements of game screenshots in the home page. And on the 17th we posted that this title would be based on Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE. But we acknowledge that we did not deliver enough information to our customers from the beginning.

Concerning this, for all customers who have purchased / pre-ordered Genei Ibun Roku #FE Encore through Nintendo eShop or My Nintendo Store, and want to request a cancellation caused by this matter, we will provide the procedures in this page at a later date.

If you're curious as to what was changed for the western localization of #FE, check this out:

  • The first is an age bump for some of the characters - Tsubasa, Itsuki and Touma - taking them up from 17 to 18 years of age. There are also changes to costumes, with some of the female characters wearing less revealing clothing.
  • Elsewhere, a dungeon which features portraits of female characters in bikinis has been altered - the characters are now fully-clothed.
  • Finally, the Hot Springs DLC - which allows characters to dress up in swimwear - will not be released in the west.

They should offer a patch to fix it. The situation is absurd.
Funnily enough everyone else doesnt want the censored version either.

Is this another case of people being angry that they can't sexualize under aged girls?

instead of offering full refunds have an uncensored version =p (this stuff can't be offered as a toggle option in the game?)

Does that mean Nintendo is doubling down on using the Western version and will be refunding in full for those who purchased ahead of time?

LOL. This is awesome.

I remember people claiming the censoring was "fine" or even better than the original version. Now Nintendo themselves apologize for it. Awesome.

How can you expect people to pay full price for this if it doesn't feature minors in bikinis.

This is so dumb.

Now the game will bomb a second time and this time it will stay dead. (And people will blame the CENSORSHIP even though it bombed perfectly fine without it the first time in Japan, tool)

Nintendo is a shining example of how the industry should and shouldn't be run, depending on the topic (this vs. online infrastructure come to mind).

Cool to see western Nintendo have an influence on Japan. I hope this would happen on a bigger level though

Was it really that heavily censored in the US? I haven't played it but I was under the impression that it was just costumes that were changed. Couldn't they have just put the original models back in?

All these drive by troll comments about 'vagina bones' are fucking ridiculous.
All it shows is you don't know there sheer extent of the ham handed censorship that the game was hit with.

Can we please stop referring to things that have not been censored as having been censored. The game has been localized and adapted for Western markets. Not censored.

The game has much bigger problems than what was changed for the western release

And god damn I hate the internet's improper usage of the term censorship

I'm curious about the differences between the US and JP versions. Is it really so severe that people are bothered by it?

Then it's censored in Japan, is it not? Because it doesn't need to be localized there.

Actually it would be funny of TMS on Switch turns out DOESN'T bomb and the people complaining about the CENSORSHIP was only a very, VERY vocal minority.

Makes the second arc of the game so awkward. At least that could have been made differently...

It's censored now in Japan though.

Such a weird thing. I'm against the censorship, I'll still buy it not a big deal but Nintendo has been allowing much much worse things on the platform over here in NA so I'm not seeing why it had be this way?

That's something they could have easily avoided by saying it from the start instead of allowing preorders before saying it...
Making a definitive edition of a game by basing it on the localisation that most people disliked was really a dumb move in the first place.
Japanese players are angry about it and asked for refunds, people that bought the game in the west and disliked the localisation are angry about it won't double dip, and the few that liked the localization won't make up for those sales (and some others didn't even buy the game on wiiu in the first place). It's a really niche game that no audience really want at this point.

And as said in the other thread, people joking about the (really stupid) "vagina bones" meme completely miss the point which allow them to not actually talk about poor the whole localization of this game had been. The content of the original game is really similar to Persona 4/5, which didn't cause any issues in the west.

imo no. the original japanese release doesn't really have that bad of a content to warrant a change and one of the change nintendo west made it more lewd lmao

this just really screams powerplay from nintendo western branch

That's really dumb that people care about this crap in the first place, or even call it "censorship" because it really isn't. The people that care about characters being underage and want more revealing outfits are just creeps, flat out.

Censored is a loaded term and not accurate in this instance since nobody was forcing Nintendo to make things changes.

And for those who haven't played the game, here's just how minor the changes are:
1 scenario that's about gravure modeling has been edited so it's less explicit.
Panty upskirt shots have been removed
A handful of costumes have been modified
An NPC is shown sitting up instead of lying on a bench
A very short paid hotsprings fanservice DLC was removed

That's it. This isn't the NA version of Persona 1 PS1 where they made massive changes to the entire game including cutting out a huge chunk of the game.

For people who haven't played it yet, TMS#FE is a fantastic game. It's easily in my Top 5 Best turn-based JRPGs of the 2010's. It's like a Persona spin-off with a modified battle system & more focus on dungeons than S-Links (but more S-Link-esque stuff than say a main SMT title). Great soundtrack, excellent gameplay, and if you like FE, there's a bunch of FE references in it.

The changes are absolutely fine and the fact that people always talk about it like someone drowned their dog is embarrassing.

If you want to see an underage girl shove her cleavage in your face, play Persona 5.

Censored is a weird way to refer to Nintendo willingly de-creepifying their own product
