So what happenes with Star Fox or whatever Retro was working on before this? Is it possible that Retro either has a second team working on MP4 or it be on hold until their new game comes out.

I really don't wan to wait 10 years for a new Retro game.

Also forgot to add I wonder why people think it was going to be shown at the TGA? If it was intended to be shown there then got pulled this could been a rash decision.

Hopefully then whatever Retro was working on for years is nearing completion so they can focus their efforts on Prime.

Make sense though, the Prime series are consistently very critically accalimed with 90+ - they're gonna want to deliver a worthy Prime game for todays standards.

One would assume that Nintendo had a roadmap that had both Retro's current project and Prime 4 coming out in roughly the same year, but things have not turned out that way.
The thing is, Nintendo HAD to announce MP4. They had the Metroid remake re&ady to launch. It would have received a lot of hate had they not said they were planning to release a new Prime game. Same thing that happened with Let's Go this year: they had to reassure people that there still was a new Gen coming. See the hate USUM received when it was not Pokémon Star. This is all there was to it, it had barely started development.

And so, In early 2017 (when they decided this I would guess) they couldn't give it to Retro because they were busy with their current project. But now that Retro is (probably) close to finishing their new game, they can start a new project.
according to rumours they were working on 2 projects (new ip with problematic development and Star Fox racing with good development) so probably when the idea of doing a Metroid 4 came about they decided to go with another studio since Retro had their plate full (all of this is speculation with the info we have from insiders)
I understand how the situation came to be, but we also had quotes from Miyamoto (I believe) from as far back as 2015 expressing interest in reviving the Metroid Prime mainline series. Assuming Retro is developing that Star Fox racing shooter, I don't see why that project couldn't have been handed to, for example, Bandai Namco instead, in order to let Retro work on this to begin with.

Then again, that's more than a year after Tropica Freeze's development wrapped up, so maybe they had already begun working on one of those two projects before they were having talks about a hypothetical Prime 4.

Another frigging 3 years wait for the remote chance of a good Metroid game, what a mess.
I didn't trust the supposed BandaiNamco team to do a good job at all but i would have much preferred taking my chances with it this year/early next year than to wait another complete development cycle for this game.
Heck probably the Switch will be on the way out by the time this thing get released.

Why even freaking announce it in the first place?

Give the studio that was supposed to make MP4 the trilogy to remaster. I’m sure they’re good enough for that?

Why wasn't it just Retro before? They made things needlessly difficult. You'd be tone deaf to not see that's what every fan wanted in the first place.

Well, kudos to them for actually announcing that they've scrapped everything. Usually this stuff just gets leaked to kotaku.

*Kingdom Hearts 3, a game that was delayed and rebooted 2 years after announcement, releases in Japan*

*MP4 is delayed and rebooted 2 years after announcement on the very same day."

Perfectly balanced... as all things should be.
KHIII wasn't rebooted. They switched engines and lost some work but they didn't start from scratch again.

There are far more angry people in this thread than I was expecting.

I love how open Nintendo is about this kinda stuff. You don't often get studios giving updates like this, and honestly, while a tad disappointing, I'm so excited. It's in the hands of the original developers of the Prime series! If they can't do it justice, then nobody can.

I cant imagine they made this decision lightly. I hope one day to see some dev footage from the current iteration though.
Seriously. Nintendo made the right move here.

1. This is better than putting out some Fallout 76 or Federation Force ass game.
2. They are being transparent about the status of a game, which, I don't think they have ever done before.
3. It shows the seriously care about the franchise and want it to be the best that it can be.
4. It means they are probably in a comfortable enough position to not force a shitty product out. If they were more desperate, I think things would be different and we would be getting a 70/100 Meta score in early 2019.

This industry needs more transparency. Nintendo is setting an amazing precedent here.

They're even posting it on their social media. Not used to this Nintendo and being so open and transparent with not so great news. I think they really wanna throw this out the way before the next direct comes.
Yeah, I think you have a point. They want to head-off all the 'Metroid Prime 4 when?' comments.

Jesus christ dude I know you wouldn't ever type a negative word about Nintendo on this board but who the fuck do you think it was that gave development of the game to 'Bandai Singapore' or whoever it was and has the weight of their OWN MISTAKE to bear

Ok, the game that would make me finally buy a switch was rebooted. I hope they announce the trilogy now.

So, some time (long before the Video Game Awards) there was a rumor that development will be shifting to a different studio. Back then some people were like "eh, that's not that bad of news, it could mean many things" (bit baffling consdering that shifting development to a different team is a good indicator that there are some serious problems). Well then, turns out those rumors had some truth behind them considering this announcement now. Makes all those fake rumors about Metroid Prime 4 being at the TGAs even more hilarious in hindsight.

Now, Retro finally doing Prime 4 (just as people hoped they would do) is good news. Sucks that we won't see it for a long while, but at least Nintendo was willing to act and not release a product they aren't satisfied with. That's worth a lot! Not many companies would do that.

It happens but they really released that teaser trailer way too early.

I am confident Retro can do it, though.

I can wait. Retro will do a good job.

Would be kind of fascinating to see the scrapped version, this feels like an RE2/RE4 prototype situation.

Some franchises just aren't meant to be developed by anyone else. If Nintendo ever desires to make a Smash Bros. without Sakurai, I can see him being called in half way through development.

I also get the same sense when people ask for the developers of FAST RMX, or someone like Monster Games or the developers of Sonic and Sega racing to make the next F-zero. I just don't feel it will work. Maybe some franchises really are better left untouched, depending on who is available to work on them.
Well, F-Zero at least has the example of Sega absolutely nailing it, indistinguishable from a Nintendo developed game. But yeah, I get what you mean, it's easy to see how a dev team could just miss the feel of F-Zero, considering most of its comparators don't really feel the same.

This is pretty crazy! Other M was up to standards, and Federation Force but not this? I think it shows a real dedication to wanting to ensure the game meets expectations, but it's certainly a bold move!

Maybe there is some truth to Nintendo wanting their big games to be BOTW tier.

It's good Nintendo aknowledged the fact that their Metroid Prime was not up to the standards. Restarting may be a great move, for me at least it's ok, I wasn't expecting the game to be released any time soon anyways.

Retro, take your time and make the definitive Metroid Prime

I had a feeling that the ongoing development was going to dissappoint a lot of fans, but did not expect Nintendo to do this.

And I say this because, honestly, this whole mess seems to all be Tanabe's doing. I have no idea what happened to this man, but the whole "new development team for this project" stinks of a decision to let Tanabe "fullfill his creative vision", which had potential to lead to an even greater disaster than Other M.

Although this might have been a blow to his ego, he seems to be still involved, so I'm still not 100% sold on this project.
